The House of the Spirits, Episode 3 – Clara and Esteban on their honeymoon arrive to their new house. Now Esteban is rich and has bought the biggest mansion in town. Ferula greeted Clara cordially, and was all impatience to hear the news of the journey. Esteban quickly ushers Clara inside, showing her the house, and she is impressed at its grandeur. But she is horrified and faints when she finds out Esteban has skinned her pet dog.
When she wakes up, Clara admits that she is pregnant and that their daughter will be named Blanca. Esteban is disappointed that he wanted a son to carry on his name. Clara is emotionally struggling with her pregnancy. Months pass. Ferula becomes more and more anxious about her mental state and Clara speaks to her unborn baby telling Blanca to come out.
During this time Clara’s parents visit her but then die in a tragic accident. Esteban hides the truth from Clara to protect her, but something tells her something is wrong. She is intuitively drawn to the scene of the accident where she finds her mother’s severed head. The emotional shock puts her into labor. Esteban is not there when Ferula delivers the baby. Clara has a spiritual vision during childbirth in which she meets her mother, who promises to provide ongoing protection from the spirit world.
In the following years Blanca grows up in an atmosphere of love. Later, the family moves to Hacienda Las Tres Marías where cracks in the household start to show. But Esteban is power hungry, control hungry and blind to the emotional needs of others, even his own son.
Clara feels a connection with Pedro and his family, as Ferula hides secret forbidden feelings for Clara. She confesses this to a priest, who condemns her thoughts. Meanwhile Clara begins to sense dark truths about the land, and what Esteban is up to. Her visions of the spirit world reveal Esteban’s brutal treatment of the peasants, Pancha among them.
Disturbed by what she has seen, Clara begins to emotionally distance herself from Esteban and reject him. She makes efforts to help women in the community including opening a school but her efforts are met with resistance due to fear and oppression. The women feel Esteban’s power and that there’s nothing they can do to change their situation.
Clara’s pregnancy grows, as does the tension between her and Esteban. She insists on naming their unborn son Jaime, which angers Esteban. He reacts violently, unable to control his feelings, and makes the situation between them worse. He runs to a brothel where he meets Santito again, and she tells him about her plan to start a cooperative for marginalized workers.
That night a terrible earthquake tears the country apart. Ferula consoles Clara, and they share an intimate emotional sleeping together. But then Esteban comes back, misunderstanding the situation, and he reacts with rage. He drives Ferula from the house, threatening never to allow her to return.
Ferula disappears and Clara is left heartbroken. She looks for her, but never sees her again. Clara continues to try and get to Ferula using her spiritual abilities but can’t get to her. This loss is very hard on her and leaves an emotional scar that never really fades.
Episode Discussion
This episode is a lot about the breakup of Clara and Esteban’s marriage. What starts as a promising marriage turns south as Esteban’s controlling and violent nature is revealed. Clara has a spiritual sensitivity that allows her to see the suffering Esteban is causing, especially among the women on his land.
This episode shows the massive power imbalance in their world. Pancha and other women are stuck in a cycle of fear and dependence and cannot defy Esteban’s authority. Clara’s own attempts at empowerment are also dismissed as unrealistic.
This tragedy of Ferula’s departure also underscores Esteban’s failure to accept emotional ties that threaten his dominance. His jealousy and need for control ultimately destroy his relationship with Clara and Ferula, marking a turning point in the story where love and power collide with dire consequences.
