Citadel – Season 1 Episode 1 “The Human Enigma” Recap & Review

Citadel opens on a high-speed train snaking through the Italian Alps, and you know immediately you’re in for a slick, action-packed spy thriller. Nadia Sinh, a woman in a stunning red dress, deftly picks the pocket of a passenger, Gregor Yovanovich. Nadia then gets in touch with Bernard Orlick, who tells her that Gregor has uranium for an illegal sale, and it quickly becomes apparent that Nadia is on a secret mission.
Another familiar face joins the mission, and Nadia watches Gregor closely. Mason Kane appears out of thin air and tells her he’s been sent to help her with her operation. Nadia says she was sent on the mission solo, but Mason’s arrival indicates the complex relationship between the two spies.
Gregor gets up from his chair and Mason tries to follow him but Nadia kisses him when she sees another operative following Gregor. What follows is a dazzlingly choreographed cascade of events as Mason takes on the tailing agent while Nadia continues after her target.
In the train’s dining car, Nadia uses her charms to get Gregor’s wallet back to him cleverly, winning his confidence, then holds him up at gunpoint. But Gregor reveals a shocking truth – there is no uranium! Instead, the mission was designed as a deathtrap for Citadel agents.
Meanwhile Mason is in a brutal fight with another operative, finally throwing him out of a broken window. Back in the dining car, Gregor shows Nadia disturbing footage of Citadel agents being captured and executed, revealing that a powerful organization called Manticore is systematically wiping Citadel out.
Things turn deadly when the dining staff suddenly attack Nadia. She is disarmed and Gregor is about to kill her, but Mason arrives in the nick of time. There is a big shootout where the two agents fight through waves of enemies. Nadia is wounded in the battle and the two agents realise that they have been tricked.
Gregor sets off a bomb when they look like they’re gonna get away. The train explodes, throwing Mason and Nadia to what looks like certain death.
Later Mason wakes up in a hospital in Bellagio, Italy. He is confused and does not remember who he is. Doctors say he is Kyle Conroy, but no one can confirm who he really is, not even official records. He can’t remember anything from his life before.
Now, eight years later, Kyle is living a quiet family life in Oregon with wife Abby and daughter Hendrix. He appears to have moved on, but fragments of his past start to resurface as disturbing visions, memories of Nadia, and the explosion on the train.
Elsewhere, Manticore is extending its tentacles. UK Ambassador Dahlia Archer pushes US Secretary of State to hand over sensitive intelligence on Citadel. Elsewhere Bernard Orlick is working in the shadows, gathering intelligence on Manticore’s plans and looking for Mason.
When Bernard finally manages to find Kyle through a DNA match, he tracks him down and drags him along for his own protection. Bernard then reveals that Kyle Conroy is Mason Kane, one of Citadel’s best agents.
Bernard explains that Citadel was an independent global intelligence agency dedicated to protecting humanity. But it was destroyed by Manticore, a secret organization backed by some of the world’s most powerful families, which betrayed them from within.
Now Bernard has got the very dangerous Citadel X Case, and he needs Mason’s help to get it back. Mason still has no recollection of his past, but Bernard assures him that lending a hand to the mission could unlock everything he has forgotten.
The episode ends with a flashback to the train wreckage eight years ago, and a survivor crawling out of the wreckage – Nadia lives.
