The Terror: Devil in Silver – Season 3 Episode 1 Recap & Review

The premiere of season three of The Terror, called Devil in Silver, starts inside New Hyde Hospital with nurse Josephine running through the halls after finding that Mr. Bromden has died in terrifying circumstances. His body seems to be violently ripped apart and staff are shaken and confused. While the death is initially ruled a suicide, the damaged ceiling panel in his room suggests something far more disturbing may be lurking within the hospital walls.
But due to the brutal budget cuts the staff simply clean up the room, change the bedding and move on as if nothing happened.
Outside the hospital, we meet Pepper, a hard-working mover trying to make a better life for himself and his girlfriend Marisol and her daughter Isabel. Pepper dreams of teaching music and investing in young talent, and spends $4,000 on a professional drum kit. To him it is an investment in his future but Marisol is angry that he has spent so much of their savings without consulting her.
And then Ivan, Isabel’s biological father, comes into the picture and things get even more heated. The heated exchange rapidly escalates into a physical confrontation that culminates in Pepper being restrained by a group of plainclothes officers. But instead of jail, he is taken directly to New Hyde Hospital and put under psychiatric observation.
At New Hyde, Pepper meets Dr. Anand who insists he’s not a prisoner, but the handcuffs say otherwise. He is told he has to stay under observation for 72 hours and will be released on Monday if he abides by the rules.
Pepper starts to settle into life inside the institution, encountering some disturbing patients such as Dorry, a long-term resident who believes Pepper has been ‘summoned’ to the hospital, and his roommate Coffee, whose repetitive behaviour makes him both mysterious and disturbing.
Soon, Pepper starts to notice strange things happening around him. Josephine’s keys disappear into the ventilation system, ceiling panels disappear without explanation and disturbing visions begin to haunt him, chief among them a meeting with the dead Mr. Bromden, who asks a chilling question: Who summoned you?
Things get even darker when Pepper goes to group therapy with Dr. Badger. He experiences another terrifying vision in the session, only to wake up and discover that four days have somehow passed. When Pepper confronts Dr. Anand, he is restrained, sedated, and told his stay has been extended another two weeks for “non-compliance.”
Meanwhile, another doctor, Louie, begins to question New Hyde’s methods. His investigation takes him to the darkest corners of the hospital where he encounters a horrific supernatural event that ends in tragedy.
Episode Summary
Devil in Silver is an unsettling episode with an atmosphere of mystery, paranoia, and supernatural horror. The hospital setting immediately establishes a sense of unease and the early scenes with Mr. Bromden’s death do a great job of establishing the dark tone for the season.
Pepper is a compelling lead, dropped into a situation that gets more disturbing with each turn, leaving you with more questions than answers. His confusion is our confusion, and his journey is easy to get behind.
That said, the season premiere also feels a little bit disconnected from what longtime fans might expect from The Terror. Previous seasons have been dripping with historical horror, but Devil in Silver veers into more contemporary psychological and supernatural territory.
While the setup feels a bit rushed in places, the episode manages to build some suspense and withhold just enough information to keep viewers interested. Whether this season will fully pay off remains to be seen, but Episode 1 delivers a potent cocktail of psychological tension, disturbing visuals, and supernatural mystery.
