The second episode of Spider-Noir starts with Cat Hardy hiring Ben to find Flint Marko. She says the weird sand stuff started like six months ago but she has no idea what caused it. When she’s gone, both Ben and Janet think Cat’s not telling the whole story.
Meanwhile, Silvermane has plans for a meeting at the docks. His bodyguard Winston warns him to be careful after the recent attempt on his life, but Silvermane is more concerned with finding both Flint and Ben.
Ben begins his investigation at the Flint house and finds an old photograph from wartime. He sees Flint and Addison in the photo, which suggests the two guys could be tighter. Ben doesn’t have time to investigate it more before Winston arrives and he has to hide while Winston ransacks the place.
Meanwhile Janet goes to the bureau of crime records and bribes a policeman called Hank with food to get information about Flint Marko. She later tells Ben that Flint has a long history of criminal activity, going back to petty crimes and then becoming an enforcer for Silvermane.
Ben meets Cat at The Alcove, and accuses her of hiding Flint’s connection to Silvermane. Cat admits she was scared Ben would have turned down the case if he knew the truth. She also says that Silvermane owns The Alcove. Ben agrees to keep going, despite this. nearby on a rooftop, Flint is watching Cat, unaware of them.
Later Silvermane’s men grab Ben and put him into a car, but he breaks free and hides under a bridge. The following morning, Ben and Robbie watch Mayor Morris give his re-election speech. Ben tells Robbie to stay away from the Addison story but Robbie says no, he needs the money.
Robbie takes matters into his own hands and heads over to the Addison’s house. There he meets one of Addison’s friends, who informs him that Addison had a sickness, and sends him to the Geoffrey Hotel to locate Addison’s widow. When Robbie meets her, she admits that Addison started the fires 6 months ago, though she won’t say who hired him to kill Silvermane.
In Ben’s office, Janet is threatened by Silvermane’s thugs who are looking for Ben. Ben comes back and Janet is rattled and tells him she is quitting. This makes Ben take action. He gets dressed as a plumber, goes into an apartment, rips down a bathroom wall, and finds a hidden briefcase containing The Spider’s mask.
Addison’s friend meets Flint at a run-down theater and informs him that Addison is dead. Their talk makes it clear that both men are sick with strange “sicknesses”—sicknesses that are getting worse.
At the docks, Winston inspects Silvermane’s shipment and gives him the all clear. But before Silvermane can wrap up his meeting, The Spider arrives and takes down his men. He warns Silvermane to stay away from Ben and his friends.
The episode ends on a cruel note. Robbie calls Ben and tells him the police had been setting a trap for Silvermane at the docks. Ben stepped in and Silvermane escaped arrest, though many of his men were caught. Ben realizes he may have helped Silvermane stay in power, inadvertently, by replacing the mask.
Episode Discussion
Episode 2 keeps Spider-Noir on the go with a solid mix of detective mystery, gangster tension and superhero action. The story really works well linking Flint, Addison, Silvermane and the bizarre illness that seems to be spreading among some characters.
The best moment of the episode was Ben’s return as The Spider, but it has a bitter consequence. He puts the mask back on to protect Janet and those close to him, but in doing so, he ends up saving Silvermane from the cops. That moral complication makes Ben more interesting than a straight hero.
The episode also keeps the use of noir style to good effect. The shadows, the scenes on the roof, the danger of the dockside, the smoky atmosphere all build up a world that feels dangerous and stylish. The color version has some striking moments, particularly in The Alcove, but the black-and-white presentation gives the show a stronger noir identity.
Overall, “Tread Lightly” is a snappy and engaging episode that deepens the mystery while putting Ben in a tough spot. It’s clear the show isn’t just about action, it wants to explore guilt, loyalty and the cost of trying to do the right thing in a corrupt city.
