Spider-Noir Season 1 Episode 1 Recap and Review: Ben Reilly Returns to a City Full of Secrets

Spider-Noir, Season 1, Episode 1 Recap

The beginning of Spider-Noir has Ben Reilly remembering his former life in New York City. Years ago, he was known as The Spider, a masked hero who kept the city’s darkness away from the ordinary people. It was Ruby, the woman he loved, who taught him that great power brought great responsibility, and built his sense of duty. However, after Ruby’s tragic death, Ben blamed himself and walked away from the mask.

Five years later, Ben is no longer the hero. He’s a private investigator working low-paying cases and trying to stay out of trouble. That changes when he begins chasing a mysterious man named Addison. Another private investigator, Patrick Donegal, gets involved in the pursuit. Addison suddenly demonstrates a deadly ability, making fire in his hands, before getting shot. Ben saves Donegal from certain death in the explosion.

Later, Ben learns that he and Donegal had both been hired by the same man, Winston, to track Addison. Things get a bit more suspicious when Winston turns up at Ben’s office demanding answers. Ben and Donegal follow him and find out that Winston is working for Silvermane aka Finn Byrne, a powerful crime boss who controls much of New York.

Meanwhile, Ben takes a case from a man named Carmedy who says his wife is cheating on him. Ben follows the woman to The Redcliff where he sees her meet with a man. Ben can’t ignore his gut when the man turns on her. With his web, he stops the assault, proving that The Spider is not dead.

The next day, Ben and his assistant Janet develop the photos from the case and find out that the man in the pictures is the mayor of New York. Ben also figures that Carmedy’s not necessarily the woman’s husband. Or maybe the scandal is being used to destroy the mayor by someone.

Ben then meets his friend Robbie, a journalist, who tells him that the woman is Cat Hardy, a former singer, now performing at The Alcove. Robbie shows Ben a body in the hospital for his latest story. It’s James Addison. Silvermane will soon know Addison is dead.

Ben goes to The Alcove and sees Silvermane in the room as Cat is singing. Silvermane’s men are beating Donegal to find out what’s going on with Addison below the club. Donegal cannot reply. Silvermane murders him.

Ben approaches Cat and shows her the photos saying they should meet later to discuss paying for the negatives. But Ben is followed and attacked by Cat’s bodyguard, Flint. In the fight Flint displays his weird power – his body is made of sand. Ben gets away from the encounter with his webs but when Cat begs him not to hurt Flint, he gives her the negatives for free.

The next morning the episode ends with Janet ready to quit because Ben won’t make money off the case. But before she can leave, Cat shows up and hires Ben to find missing Flint.

Spider-Noir, Season 1, Episode 1 Review.

Spider-Noir gets a strong, stylish opening in the first episode. The story leans into mystery, crime, regret and corruption instead of rushing into superheroics. Ben Reilly is not a bright, hopeful hero. He is tired and haunted and doesn’t want to go back to the life he left behind.

One of the great strengths of the episode is its noir feel. Lighting and shadows, smoke-filled rooms, rooftops and city streets all add to a dark version of New York that feels dangerous and alive. The show mixes traditional detective stories with Marvel’s supernatural elements in a way that feels fresh.

Nicolas Cage is perfect for the role of Ben. His gruff voice and tired look give a noir edge to the character. Ben might act like he doesn’t care anymore, but the episode proves that he can’t walk away when someone is in need.

The episode also does a good job of setting up a number of mysteries at once. Addison’s death, Silvermane’s power, Cat Hardy’s secrets, Flint’s disappearance, the mayor’s scandal, they all connect to a bigger web of corruption. Some of the supporting characters are still underdeveloped, but the premiere offers enough intrigue to keep viewers watching.

All in all, Spider-Noir Season 1 Episode 1 is a bold and visually pleasing premiere. It creates a broken hero, a dangerous city and a mystery that already seems bigger than one case.
