Deli Boys Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Review: DarCo Faces New Threats As Max Sugar Joins The Game

Deli Boys season 2 kicks off with another crazy episode of criminal plans, uncomfortable love, and dark humor that set the series apart. The DarCo crew, looking for a way to launder their ever-growing pile of dirty money, come across Max Sugar, one of the city’s most dangerous and influential men.

Scene Set by a Robbery

The premiere opens with a tense robbery at the deli. Two masked gunmen storm the store, creating immediate suspense, before the episode rewinds several hours to show how the situation developed.

Raj, Mir and Lucky are on their way to meet the notorious casino owner Max Sugar whose name says it all. Raj and Mir continue their usual banter, but all three are visibly awestruck when they reach Sugar’s lavish office.

Sugar enters dramatically and immediately establishes himself as a man who likes to be the center of attention. He plays with Mir for a while, before finally letting the group talk business.

DarCo Looking for Money Laundering Partner

The Dars need someone who can launder large sums of cash, and Sugar looks like a good candidate. Mir tries to sell the deal but negotiations become complicated fast when Sugar demands a huge percentage of every dollar passing through his operation.

Sugar and her friends are shocked when Lucky refuses. Her confidence draws his attention and what starts out as a business meeting quickly turns into something much more personal.

Sugar spots a gambler cheating on his surveillance system before the discussion can continue. He demonstrates how ruthless he can be, confronting the man and humiliating him before having him removed.

The meeting is brief, but Sugar invites Lucky back later that night for further private negotiations.

Andrew Chadwater’s Political Aspirations

Meanwhile, mayoral candidate Andrew Chadwater is out on the campaign trail again, seeking to curb drug activity throughout the city.

A look at his personal life unfolds in a conversation with his staff. References to his ex-girlfriend indicate that he’s not over her and his tendency to lash out is evident when he fires an employee in a heated exchange.

Andrew continues to blame DarCo for many of the city’s problems, setting up another potential conflict for the season.

Troubles at the Deli again

Meanwhile, at DarCo headquarters, the crew attempts to hide millions of dollars in cash. One of Raj’s elaborate security traps is accidentally set off, and Matthew (their long-suffering assistant) becomes an unwilling victim.

And as always, Raj and Mir start blaming each other instead of solving the problem. Meanwhile Lucky is getting ready for her second meeting with Sugar hoping to land the deal that could be a game changer for their operation.

Lucky & Sugar Grow Closer

That night Lucky comes to Sugar’s casino, only to find that it’s closed to the public. Instead, Sugar has set up a private dinner for the two of them.

They talk about business and personal things, Sugar talks about his family, but he still flirts with Lucky. In the end he proposes an unusual arrangement.

He agrees to help launder DarCo’s money, but only if Lucky consents to a second date. Then comes a playful wager that leads to the two falling in love.

There may be some awkwardness in the chemistry between them, but it’s one that undeniably changes the power dynamics of the deal.

The Return of the Robbery

The story ends where it began, with the robbery that opened it.

Lucky is trapped in the deli by the masked intruders, and Raj and Mir try to rescue him. Unfortunately their efforts only worsen the situation and all three find themselves staring down armed attackers.

Just when it seems like all hope is lost, Max Sugar arrives.

Max Sugar Shows His Real Power

Sugar quickly takes over the confrontation. The robbers know his name, and they know they are dealing with a man whose reputation in the criminal underworld is well deserved.

Sugar doesn’t react violently immediately, but makes this meeting a game of chance. One robber survives the game thinking he’s earned his freedom.

Sugar has no intention, however, of letting either man walk away. Then he kills the two robbers soon after. Proving how dangerous he is further.

Lucky is impressed with the display and more willing to merge her business relationship with Sugar and their budding romantic relationship.

Ahmed is still a puzzle

Robbery done, focus on DarCo’s future.

The new money-laundering scheme is now in motion but Raj suspects there is a bigger force working against them. He begins to consider that Ahmed may have been involved in the planning of the attack on the deli.

Andrew Chadwater receives intelligence that puts the Dars at Sugar Palace Casino. He sees an opportunity, and personally goes to make sure that a number of storylines are on a collision course.

Episode Recap

The season 2 premiere brings back all the things that make Deli Boys fun to watch. The series still finds a way to combine absurd comedy with a crime drama, creating absurdly ridiculous situations that somehow are also surprisingly tense.

Turns out Max Sugar is a great addition to the cast. His erratic nature, imposing stature and growing relationship with Lucky make him immediately one of the most interesting characters on the show.

The episode also does a good job setting up future conflicts. Ahmed is still missing, Andrew Chadwater is still on his crusade against DarCo and the criminal ambitions of the organization are greater than ever.

The romantic subplot between Lucky and Sugar sometimes feels a little too over-the-top, but it adds another layer of unpredictability to the story. Coupled with the show’s biting sarcasm and dark humor, the premiere provides an entertaining kick-off to the new season and leaves plenty of questions for future e
