The capacity to keep audiences guessing what is real and who can be trusted is often the deciding factor in the success of psychological thrillers. Curry Barker’s Obsession (2025), written and directed, takes the familiar trope of unrequited love and turns it into something dark, unsettling and surprisingly thought-provoking.
Starring Michael Johnston as Bear Bailey and Inde Navarrette as Nikki Freeman, the film examines the dangerous consequences of forcing love where it does not naturally exist. At the end of the credits, audiences are left wondering who the real monster is: the person under the spell or the person who cast it.# Bear’s Wish Makes All the Difference
This is the story of Bear Bailey, an introverted employee at the local music store who secretly loves his co-worker, Nikki Freeman. Bear has a hard time expressing his feelings, and he rarely acts on them, whatever they may be.
Bear is at a low point emotionally after the accidental death of his beloved cat. In his search for a new necklace for Nikki, he finds a strange thing called the One Wish Willow. He does not give Nikki the gift, but keeps the magical object for himself, wishing that she would love him more than all the others in the world.
At first the wish looks like the dream come true. Nikki returns his affection, becoming passionately devoted to him. But Bear soon realizes that what he has created is not real love, but an unhealthy obsession.# Nikki’s Behavior Gets Out of Control
With the growth of their relationship, Nikki’s obsession becomes more and more disturbing. She keeps an eye on Bear at all times, doesn’t let him leave her side, and starts to act more possessive, more and more every day.
The pivotal moment comes at a party when Nikki sees Bear talking to Sarah Harper. Consumed by jealousy, she loses control in public, hurting herself in a violent outburst.
Obviously the wish has taken away Nikki’s ability to behave normally. It hasn’t given her romance so much as it has made her into someone who lives and breathes Bear. The Frightening Truth About the One Wish Willow
Desperate to fix the situation, Bear calls the One Wish Willow helpline. The answer he gets is devastating.
The spell can only be cast once in a person’s life, and there is no easy way to undo it. The only way out is death—Bear’s or Nikki’s.
Faced with this reality, Bear first decides to live on with the consequences of his decision. But the emotional weight is impossible to ignore, especially when Nikki accidentally reveals she would rather die than be under the spell’s influence.
This moment implies that there is still a real Nikki under the obsession, suffering quietly, unable to get herself back.# Sarah, an Innocent Victim
As Bear’s relationship with Nikki falls apart, he reaches out to Sarah. In their talk Sarah reveals that she’s been accepted into an arts college and ultimately admits that she has feelings for him.
She also reveals a long-hidden secret concerning Nikki and Ian.
Nikki arrives before the talk can go any further, and sees Sarah as a threat. In a frenzy she then kills Sarah, under the spell of the magical obsession that controls her actions.
This is the tragedy . For all concerned , it is the point of no return . It started with a want for love, now it’s escalated into irreversible violence.# Ian’s Wish Proves Magic Is Real
Bear is still searching for a solution. He looks to Ian, trying to prove the One Wish Willow is real. To demonstrate its power, Ian takes one of the remaining wishes and asks for a billion dollars.
The wish is granted immediately, proving the supernatural force is real.
Sadly, this realization comes too late to save anyone.
When Bear comes home he finds that Nikki has lost all sense of reality. She has made a sick tableau of Sarah’s body, in a grotesque effort to be the person she thinks Bear wants.
Ian arrives a few moments later to help but Nikki shoots him dead before he can intervene.# Why Bear Surrenders
Bear already has multiple deaths under his belt, but finally comes clean about everything that has happened.
He knows that the only way to break the spell is if one of them dies. He decides to sacrifice himself, taking the same pills that killed his cat earlier in the film, rather than letting Nikki remain trapped forever.
He has one last moment with Nikki before he falls over.
His death immediately breaks the spell.# What Happens to Nikki After the Spell is Over?
When the spell is broken, Nikki is back in control of her mind, as her true self.
It hurts so much.
Throughout the film, there are subtle clues indicating that Nikki’s true consciousness has been held hostage beneath her obsessive behavior, aware of what was happening but unable to stop it. When the spell finally breaks she is forced to face the horrifying truth that she was used to murder her best friends.
Sarah is dead. Ian is dead. Bear is dead. Bear is dead.
All those losses hit her at once, emotionally, making the ending far more tragic than many viewers initially expect.# Ending Explained
Obsession may appear to be a horror-comedy thriller, but its central message is about control and the illusion of love.
In the beginning of the story, Bear is a sympathetic character. He’s lonely, he’s insecure, and he just wants somebody he cares about to love him. His wish reveals a darker side to his character. He uses her feelings for his own happiness, rather than accepting Nikki’s free will.
The film repeats an uncomfortable question: is love still love if it is forced?
Eventually Bear learns that there is no joy in getting exactly what he wished for. When Nikki is fully committed to him, he gets bored with the fantasy he created and starts to notice Sarah.
This shows the selfishness of his desire. What Bear actually wanted was not Nikki but the validation of being loved.
Nikki on the other hand is a victim of that selfishness. Everything she does that’s horrible is a magical compulsion she can’t help.
And by the end, the film has a clever turn of perspective on the audience. Viewers may first feel sympathy for Bear but many will end up questioning whether he was responsible for the tragedy from the start.# Summary
Obsession is a surprisingly effective thriller that combines dark comedy, psychological horror and relationship drama. The film has its share of shocking moments, but its biggest strength is the examination of obsession disguised as love.
The ending leaves the audience with a haunting lesson: real relationships cannot be built on control, manipulation or possession. When love becomes something that has to be forced, it ceases to be love at all.
The message stays with you long after the last scene, making Obsession one of the more memorable psychological thrillers of the year.
