And in Episode 10, all the big storylines come together as Hee-ju, Woo-gi, Do-kyung and Chairman Ahn race towards an explosive conclusion.
Finally, some characters reveal their true colors and some pay the ultimate price. Alliances are broken, lives are lost and at the end of the episode Hee-ju has to decide what means more, wealth or trust.# Woo-gi lives as Gold Hunt rolls on
The episode begins with Hee-ju coming back to the pawnshop to find Woo-gi unconscious. When he wakes up, he can’t make sense of what happened and wonders if Do-kyung really was the one who shot him.
They quickly turn their attention to the missing gold bars. Hee-ju first suspects Woo-gi took them, but he says he has no idea of their disappearance. Dangerous men are closing in and the pair escape and begin to retrace recent events to discover the truth.
Meanwhile, Do-kyung walks right into another dangerous situation. He tries to sell one of the gold bars, only to attract the attention of Chairman Ahn’s organization. Bait soon. He’s trapped and made to be bait. ### A Deadly Trap for Hee-ju
Ho-cheol forces Do-kyung to call Hee-ju and lure her into a jewelry store. Hee-ju agrees to come after Ho-cheol promises not to hurt him, Do-kyung tries to subtly warn her during the conversation.
Hee-ju comes to an important realization after the call ends. If Ho-cheol is still searching for the gold, then nobody actually has found it. She begins to suspect that the treasure may still be buried somewhere else.
Woo-gi makes an emotional plea before continuing their search. He asks Hee-ju to promise to protect each other if things didn’t work out. Her answer shows how crazy she has gotten about the gold. But instead of the promise, she confesses that she would rather die than lose it.# The Truth About the Missing Gold Starts to Emerge
Woo-gi looks for clues and finds that Do-kyung’s car does not contain any gold. A conversation with Jin-man makes him question everything they thought was true.
And then Woo-gi suddenly remembers that there was only one gold bar in the pawnshop. This realization flips the entire story on its head and makes you think Hee-ju was one step ahead of everyone all along.
A flashback confirms Hee-ju was already financially secure after finding money had been transferred into her account. Quietly she began to prepare for a future out of the chaos.# The Jewelry Store Becomes a Bloodbath
As Hee-ju gets closer to the jewelry store, she overhears a heated argument between Ho-cheol and Gi-tae. The tensions that have been building up explode and Ho-cheol ends up murdering Gi-tae in cold blood.
Inside the building, the violence increases. Ho-cheol kills several members of the Yes Money organization and pursues anyone trying to escape. Soon the store becomes the scene of a deadly confrontation.
Hee-ju sneaks inside, determined to save Do-kyung. But her attempt at rescuing him backfires when Ho-cheol catches up with them. As the struggle continues, Do-kyung opens a window for her, but Ho-cheol manages to avoid immediate danger.
Meanwhile Chairman Ahn arrives with armed men and orders everyone involved to be taken alive.# Do-kyung’s Sad Ending
The emotional climax of the confrontation takes place when Ho-cheol traps Hee-ju and Do-kyung.
Do-kyung begs Ho-cheol to save her life. His efforts are of no avail. In one of the most heartbreaking moments of the finale, Ho-cheol shoots him dead in front of Hee-ju.
The loss has broken her heart, but there’s no time for mourning. Ho-cheol immediately goes to work looking for the gold and starts threatening Hee-ju.# The End of Ho-cheol’s Reign
Just when things seem hopeless, Jin-man arrives and opens fire.
Bullets fly through the jewelry store and a tense gun battle erupts. Although he is injured, Ho-cheol will not give up. But it is too much for him.
Hee-ju participates in the final showdown, and delivers the final blow that kills Ho-cheol for good.
But the victory is a heavy price. In the fight, Hee-ju is badly wounded and soon afterwards collapses. Before she blacks out she tells Woo-gi an important secret: the rest of the gold bars are stored at Jeil Workshop.
This season, she says for the first time out loud that she wants to live.# Hee-ju’s Big Secret
Woo-gi discovers another twist awaiting on him at Jeil Workshop.
The gold bars hidden there are fakes.
Hoon-seok says Hee-ju had already ordered counterfeit bars to be made. Her plan was simple and brilliant. She made false gold, so that no one around her could ever be fully trusted with the truth.
Even Woo-gi and Jin-man were kept in the dark.
Meanwhile, Chairman Ahn captures Hee-ju and subjects her to a brutal interrogation. And even now she will not divulge the true location of the gold.# Jin-man’s ultimate sacrifice
As negotiations start, Jin-man unveils a shocking truth. He tells her that he is really Hee-ju’s dad.
This revelation changes the meaning behind a lot of his actions throughout the series. Hee-ju was constantly in his mind not because he felt guilty or obliged but because he loved him like a father.
Jin-man, knowing he might not survive, hands Sun-ok’s ashes to Woo-gi and asks him to protect them.
He then makes a deal with Chairman Ahn, giving the fake gold bars in exchange for Hee-ju’s freedom.
At first, the trade seems to go well. But experts soon discover the bars are merely for show. Chairman Ahn feels he has been duped and orders his men to kill Jin-man.
He dies in one of the most emotional moments in the whole drama, sacrificing himself so that his daughter can get away.## Why Hee-ju Leaves Out Woo-gi
Woo-gi and Hee-ju run away together after being rescued.
For a moment it seems like they might finally move on as partners. Rather, Hee-ju decides to back off again.
She tells Woo-gi to go, admitting that she cannot fully trust him, even after all they’ve been through together. He walks away hurt, disappointed.
The decision is a sign of the deep emotional scars that have haunted Hee-ju throughout the series. Even after being betrayed countless times, she can’t put her complete faith in anyone else.# The Real Gold Was Right Under Our Noses
And, of course, the finale has one last surprise.
The real gold bars never arrived at Jeil Workshop.
They had been hidden inside Hee-ju’s own car the entire time.
She finds the treasure and goes to Dong-gu and gives him a gold bar as a reward for his help. Later, she finds Sun-ok’s ashes and breaks down emotionally, reflecting on all that she has lost. #Gold Land Ending Explained
And then the story moves forward to France.
Hee-ju has successfully turned her stolen fortune into a comfortable new life, living under a new identity. She lives in a palatial home, and still gets money from the gold she sold.
She also gets Jin-man’s ashes, giving some closure to the complicated relationship they never got to fully explore.
And then the ending is even more hopeful with the unexpected appearance of Woo-gi. Their meeting implies that in spite of everything neither quite has forgotten the other.
But at the end there is a new danger introduced. It turns out Geonggang is keeping tabs on both Hee-ju and Woo-gi, suggesting their troubles are not over yet.# Last Reviewed
Gold Land wraps up its first season with a satisfying mix of action, tragedy and emotional payoff. The finale successfully ties together most of the major mysteries, and delivers several memorable twists.
The definite highlight is Jin-man’s sacrifice. It’s a character that generated much goodwill among viewers throughout the series, only to become its most heartbreaking figure. His willingness to sacrifice everything for Hee-ju makes him one of the most compelling characters in the drama.
The only frustration left is Hee-ju’s distrust of Woo-gi. Her decision is a painful one, but believable considering all they had been through together. Years of betrayal, wounds that money and survival alone cannot mend.
The last scene in France leaves the door clearly ajar for stories to come. Whether a second season is next up remains to be seen, but Gold Land ends with enough lingering questions to keep fans buzzing long after the credits roll.
