Episode 14 finally gives us the long-awaited showdown that has been hanging over the series since the very beginning. Eui-ju’s secret writing project is now an open secret and the fallout is felt across the whole school, friendships are being tested, reputations questioned and tough decisions made.
The episode opens with Ha-su talking to Woo-su about Eui-ju’s controversial novel. Woo-su takes it in stride and admits coolly that he knew about it all along. Ha-su’s response makes her even angrier, and she accuses him of taking Eui-ju’s side and showing preferential treatment towards a student.
Ha-su is determined to reveal the truth and takes matters into her own hands. She spreads the novel around the school, and things get worse when she tells Principal Young-hee herself. She believes the story could harm the school’s reputation and says the person who wrote it should face disciplinary measures.
In the meantime, Go-ya discovers that Eui-ju has been concealing yet another secret from her. Stung by the revelation, she initially confronts her friend, but soon understands that Eui-ju’s silence was out of embarrassment, not suspicion. Go-ya doesn’t turn her back, but is there to lend a hand during one of the hardest times of Eui-ju’s life. Meanwhile, Dan-ji and Yeon-jae are not swayed by the increasing criticism and stand up for Eui-ju when people start criticizing her.
The debate soon moves to the classroom, with students taking opposing sides. Some stand up for Eui-ju’s freedom of creative expression and some condemn her for writing the novel. What begins as a shouting match quickly descends into chaos and Woo-su has to get Eui-ju out of the volatile situation.
Eui-ju admits that she is willing to take the blame for everything, away from the crowd. She asks Woo-su to stay away from the situation and deny any involvement in the story. But Woo-su won’t protect himself at her expense. But he urges her to be truthful about the consequences, not to cover up his own part.
Things become more serious when Principal Young-hee calls Eui-ju. The Principal demands the book be taken down at once and doesn’t want to hear any explanations. Woo-su tries to protect Eui-ju, but to no avail. Young-hee forges ahead with plans to set up a disciplinary committee, terrifying Eui-ju that he may actually be expelled.
Elsewhere the folk who inspired characters in the novel finally get to read it for themselves. Dong-ju and Da-ju react very differently. Gi-jeon Some people don’t get the appeal of the story, others are annoyed at how they were represented. The conversation brings up an important question about artistic inspiration and individual boundaries. Woo-su doesn’t seem to be calling for a united front, but rather for people to make up their own mind about the situation.
With rising pressure Ji-a reaches out to Eui-ju with emotional support. Later, her father runs into Eui-ju by chance and immediately knows something is wrong. His encouragement is a rare comfort and a reminder that honesty and perseverance can surmount difficult circumstances.
The most touching sequence in the episode comes when Eui-ju finally opens up to her parents. She confesses her love of writing, explains the novel’s situation and tells them about the disciplinary hearing she may have to attend. Instead, she asks them to read the story and understand her perspective themselves, rather than continue to hide behind secrecy.
At the end of the episode, Eui-ju’s painful but necessary choice is made. She publicly apologizes to her readers, admits that she may have hurt the people who inspired her work, and takes full responsibility for her actions. And with that, she takes the novel off the platform for good, wrapping up a major chapter of the story.
Review:
Episode 14 finally gets to the heart of the central conflict that has defined the series since its earliest episodes. Eui-ju’s novel is found and the fallout that follows feels like something that arguably should have happened much earlier. This story line was the basis of the whole story but ran in the background for most of the drama.
This is the kind of episode that works best when it is about accountability and personal growth. Eui-ju has to face the consequences of her actions and the story does a better job of discussing responsibility than it has in previous episodes. She talks to her friends, teachers and parents, which gives her character some emotional heft and makes her feel older than before.
However, the way the series handles the students’ romantic feelings for their teachers is still problematic. One of the most controversial aspects of the drama, this element of the story has often taken away from otherwise interesting character relationships. “The show has rarely dealt with the issue with the seriousness many viewers wanted, which makes those stories hard to fully buy.”
Those concerns aside, Episode 14 manages to build real tension and emotional stakes. Eui-ju is facing the threat of punishment, and everyone in school now knows her secret. It seems like the drama is finally coming to a meaningful conclusion.
