It’s been a year since the cataclysmic battle with the Chroma Conclave and The Legend of Vox Machina is back and it doesn’t take long for new threats to come to the fore. The heroes have become legends throughout Tal’Dorei, but the scars of their last victory still haunt them. This first episode opens the door to a darker, more mysterious season about faith, forbidden magic and an ancient evil that’s biding its time to rise again.# Vox Machina in a Changed World
The season premiere takes place one year after Vox Machina saved the realm from the dragon threat. Although peace had largely returned, not everyone was able to move on.
Pike is having some emotional trouble with the destruction behind the Chroma Conclave. She saves countless lives but questions her purpose and distances herself from the Everlight. Her lingering guilt is one of the episode’s strongest emotional threads, and it shows that victory often comes at a price.
Meanwhile Grog stays by her side, offering support as she looks for answers about her faith and the future.# Taryon Darrington’s Dramatic Entrance
One big addition to the story is Taryon Darrington, an ambitious nobleman who wants to make a name for himself as a hero. Taryon is rich and confident, and he has a mechanical assistant called Doty with him. He makes an impression fast.
His request for Vox Machina’s help is predicated on a series of attacks on his family’s gem shipments. Taryon thinks the legendary adventurers can help find out who is behind the rising threat and bring order back to the trade routes.
His arrival provides a few lighter moments but also acts as the catalyst that drives the story forward.# Pike Encounters a Dangerous Discovery
The investigation takes Pike on a chase through the streets of the city after a hooded figure. The chase culminates in a stunning revelation, the masked attacker is none other than Priestess Talia.
Talia thinks the gods have been lying to their followers and that the present system needs to be replaced with a new world order. Her radical beliefs are symptomatic of a growing movement to question divine authority.
But before Pike can learn any more, Talia uses enchanted gems in a destructive ritual which appears to kill her. But clues later in the episode suggest her story is far from finished.
The encounter leaves Pike with even more questions, and she decides to go to the source for answers – the Everlight Temple.## Vex and Percy Drift Apart
Vex and Percy are still getting used to life in Whitestone, away from the main group. And they are successful, and increasingly responsible, but there is a gap between them.
Percy is still obsessed with the mystery of the black orb introduced in the previous season. All his attempts to disable or destroy it have failed and his research has revealed something truly disturbing. The orb seems able to gobble up and stamp out magic itself.
Percy is concentrating on the object Vex is missing her days of adventuring freedom and excitement. The difference in priorities highlights a growing tension that could become important later in the season.# Gloomstalker’s Hunt
Vex wants to escape the confines of palace life, and follows rumors of a terrifying creature stalking the land near Whitestone.
The trail leads her eventually to a deadly Gloomstalker lurking in the forest. What follows is one of the most exciting action sequences of the episode as Vex and Trinket fight the monstrous beast through the wilderness.
Though she ultimately kills the creature, the encounter costs her her trusted bow as the monster destroys it before dying.
The fight is a great visual spectacle, but also hints that the strange magical disturbances affecting the world may be related to the bigger picture happening behind the scenes.#Acts of the Cult of the Whispering One
The biggest development of the episode comes in the last moments.
There is a secret cult of the Whispered One that performs a disturbing blood ritual. In a dark ceremony, one of their followers is sacrificed. The ritual indicates that efforts to return their master to the world are far from finished.
The scene, in addition to finding the magic-consuming orb, establishes the season’s central conflict and confirms that an even greater threat is beginning to emerge.## Summary:
The Season 4 premiere does a good job of balancing character development, world-building and action while setting up the next big storyline. The episode is less about setting up big, bombastic battles right away, and more about exploring how its heroes have changed in the aftermath of their victory over the Chroma Conclave.
Pike’s crisis of faith, Percy’s growing obsession with the mysterious orb, and the introduction of Taryon Darrington all provide good seeds for future episodes. The editing is particularly good, moving easily between several story lines without disturbing the pace.
Most importantly the episode creates a strong sense of unease around the Whispered One. The cult activity, the strange magical anomalies, and the growing religious conflict are all pointing towards a darker, more dangerous season ahead.
With a number of mysteries already in play, The Legend of Vox Machina delivers a confident season opener that lays the groundwork for an exciting new chapter.
