Apple TV+’s psychological thriller Cape Fear gets off to a tense and disturbing start as the Bowden family finds themselves squarely in the sights of a man thought to be a merciless killer. The first episode opens up old wounds and reveals old secrets. It sets the stage for a suspenseful battle between a well respected family and a recently released convict who may not be as innocent as he appears.# A Disturbed Comfortable Life
The story begins in Savannah, Georgia, where attorney Anna Bowden seems to have built a good life. She lives in the suburbs with her husband Tom, a prosecutor, and their two children, Natalie and Zack. On the surface, everything looks stable, but cracks within the family quickly become evident.
Zack remains estranged from his parents after an incident last year at school. Worried about his son’s behavior, Tom contacts him and even proposes a transfer to a different school. The talk turns sour quickly as Zack accuses his parents of abandoning the values they once lived by. He says they have stopped helping ordinary people and are now helping wealthy clients and advancing their careers.
The difference of opinion also points to a growing gulf in the family, and suggests deeper problems bubbling under the surface.# A Shocking Admission That Changes Everything
Elsewhere in the movie, a frantic woman, plastered with newspaper clippings about Max Cady, writes a suicide note and attempts to kill herself. But surprisingly she survives the first attempt and answers a mysterious phone call. In the course of the conversation she admits to a crime before making a second attempt which is deadly.
Two weeks later, it is clear why she did what she did.
Max Cady, who spent years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife, but was officially cleared of the crime, is freed from custody. The woman’s confession told us that she was the criminal, not Max. More persuasive still, authorities find the murder weapon she names in her note, with evidence matching the first investigation.
The revelation turns one of Georgia’s most notorious murder cases completely upside down.## Anna’s Past Comes Back to Haunt Her
Anna’s involvement in Max’s first case makes his release all the more problematic for her. As more details emerge, viewers learn that Anna used to be Max’s defense attorney.
At trial, she cut a deal with prosecutors rather than continue the fight to prove his innocence. She was pregnant and under a lot of stress at the time. Shortly afterwards she left her husband and began seeing Tom, the prosecutor who had argued Max’s case in court.
These revelations make for a complicated history, and pose an obvious question: if Max thinks the legal system destroyed his life, does he also blame Anna and Tom?
The answer remains unclear, but the tension surrounding his release is impossible to ignore.# Strange Things Begin Happening to the Bowdens
Soon after Max is released strange things start to happen to the Bowden family.
During an important interview, Anna’s swimming pool is filled with dead skunks, an unsettling scene that seems more like a warning than a prank.
Meanwhile, Anna is collaborating with a legal reform organization and getting ready for an upcoming fundraiser. She pays a visit to Byron and his mother Bunny, and urges them to go to the event, but they both seem uncomfortably anxious and hesitant.
But at the same time, the public remains unaware of the exoneration of Max. Anna’s colleague Noa sees an opportunity to use the story as evidence of corruption and failures in the criminal justice system.
Whether Anna likes it or not, the organization wants to use Max as a symbol of wrongful conviction.## The Fundraiser. Unforeseen Twist.
Then Max appears, which is unexpected, and the fundraiser becomes the most memorable sequence of the episode.
He gets up on stage and talks about the failures of the justice system and the devastating impact wrongful convictions have on a person’s faith in institutions. He is thoughtful and composed, not angry.
What is even more disturbing is how calm he is.
Later, Anna has a private chat with him. Max shows the serious bodily harm he incurred while locked up, including hearing loss, vision problems and a serious head injury that put him into a coma for six weeks.
He says he has no hard feelings against Anna regardless and even says he wants to help the organization going forward.
But is he telling the truth? That’s one of the episode’s biggest mysteries.# A Troubling Discovery
But as the night progresses, things get darker.
Another security alarm sounds at the Bowden house, and Anna finds herself out on the lawn with Max. He says he is simply returning her purse which she accidentally left behind at the fundraiser. They are being polite to each other, but the tension is obvious.
Meanwhile, Zack is finally back home, having been out for most of the day. His actions are instantly disturbing, as he appears confused and affected by something.
Then comes the biggest shock of the episode.
Anna goes to check on her son, and sees that one of Zack’s toes has been completely removed. The awful injury immediately brings to her mind Max’s prior speech remarks about fingers and toes.
And Anna is left with the chilling knowledge that Max’s presence in their lives could be far more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
The episode also adds a layer of intrigue with the suggestion that Anna and Max share a secret that has not been revealed to the world. What went down between them could be a major factor in how the story plays out.## Summary
Cape Fear has a nice opening chapter, mixing psychological suspense with family drama quite nicely. Production values are impressive, with beautiful locations, polished cinematography and an atmosphere heavy with dread.
The reimagining does a fine job of updating the classic story and adding new mysteries to keep viewers interested. The return of Max Cady immediately introduces ambiguity, as it is impossible to tell if he is a victim seeking redemption or a predator seeking revenge.
The premiere’s biggest weakness is its repetition of information. There were some scenes that were unnecessarily repetitive, with multiple explanations of major plot points such as Anna and Tom’s history, and Zack’s personal issues.
The soundtrack can also be overly aggressive in places that would probably have more impact if they were allowed to breathe naturally.
Despite these problems, the first episode does create suspense and raise intriguing questions, however. The season premiere of Cape Fear has enough mystery to make viewers hungry for the next chapter, with secrets concealed, paranoia rising and Max Cady back in the Bowdens’ lives for good.
Rating: 4/5
A strong, suspenseful premiere that establishes a fascinating mystery and a promising psychological showdown.
