The ninth episode of My Royal Nemesis is one of the most emotional chapters of the series so far, mixing romance, historical mysteries and family drama in one compelling hour. The most intriguing parts of the story, while leaving the issue of past lives open to question, are the developing intimacy between Se-gye and Kang and the intensifying struggle with Mun-do.
The episode begins with a heartbreaking flashback. Kang Dan-sim is broken and puzzled by Cheongheon’s house arrest. He obviously cares for her, though, and tells her cruelly to live by her own instincts, and never see him again. His tearful goodbye suggests the sacrifices he was compelled to make, adding another layer to the mystery of their connection.
Kang, however, is quick to dismiss his visions as dreams. but cannot rule out that these memories might be connected to another life.
At Dynaestie’s launch event, Se-gye won’t leave Kang’s side. She keeps her distance, but he’s determined to stay close. Kang takes Se-gye out in hopes of winning over her grandfather’s approval, but her playful attitude ruins the first impression.
Meanwhile, Mun-do gets frustrated as Se-gye’s professional success keeps going up. Once again feeling ignored, he secretly bribes hospital staff to keep him updated on the nurse who had slipped into a coma earlier. His plans are disrupted when she wakes up unexpectedly and disappears before he can move in.
The mystery of Se-gye’s dreams becomes deeper when Kang talks to the shaman Geum Jeong-ae. They together are of the opinion that Se-gye could indeed be the reincarnation of Cheongheon. His therapist won’t dismiss the notion entirely, suggesting the dreams could be prophetic.
Tensions between the two soon rise to the professional level when Se-gye’s historical drama is approved for a big product placement deal. He gets angry when he reads the script for the unnecessary intimate scene and wants a different approach. The production instead employs a traditional sericulture ritual, giving Kang a stronger, more meaningful moment on screen. She dazzles all with her performance, except Ji-hyo, who is finding it harder and harder to mask her jealousy.
A quick flashback shows the source of Ji-hyo’s insecurities. She’s also worked on the same production that catapulted young Seo-ri to stardom when she was a child, which explained her long-standing resentment and competitiveness.
Viewers also get a rare look into Mun-do’s private life elsewhere. His young son Seo-jun lives in the United States and wants to see his father. Mun-do appears to prioritize family over ambition for a moment. Sadly, that hope soon evaporates as business concerns and jealousy once again take over his decisions.
Drama queen Kang puts a stop to a flirtatious actor who crosses the line on the drama set. Se-gye loves her boldness and the two keep their playful dynamic going. Later, after Se-gye has his wisdom tooth removed, another important dream emerges while he is unconscious. Cheongheon writes a poem full of emotion in his vision, inspired by Kang Dan-sim, further proving his true feelings for her.
These memories make Kang question everything. She fears Cheongheon may have been suffering in silence, and questions whether history might be repeating itself. But in voice her worries to him, Se-gye offers a different perspective. In the recollections he finds no regret, no ill-will, only love and longing.
The episode also looks at loneliness through a number of characters. Grandma Nam admits that it’s all about being with people while Dal-su is shocked to hear how isolated Kang’s life has been. These quieter conversations reinforce the episode’s central theme: that connections matter more than station, success, or ambition.
As Kang thinks back on the past, she stops by a museum exhibit featuring one of Cheongheon’s love letters. The experience forces her to face her biggest regret, that she never told him how she felt when she had the chance. She decides she won’t make that mistake again, that she will allow herself to feel.
Meanwhile, Mun-do goes round and round. His efforts to persuade Dal-su to send Se-gye to the company’s American branch backfires badly when he himself is assigned the job. He drops his plans to visit his son, losing yet another chance for happiness, to indulge his obsession rather than face the consequences.
Se-gye finds evidence connecting Mun-do to the clinic surveillance and the poisoning attempt, accelerating his downfall. Finally the nurse confesses she’s been taking bribes from Mun-do, confirming Se-gye’s suspicions.
One of the best scenes of the episode is the standoff between the two men. Mun-do bitterly argues that despite years of sacrifice he has gained nothing, while Se-gye seems to succeed effortlessly. His jealousy and frustration finally boil over, revealing the toxic rivalry that has taken over his life.
In a last-ditch effort to fight back, Mun-do threatens Kang’s future and reveals disturbing information connected to Se-gye’s family history. Se-gye is surprised by the disclosure more than he had thought and attempts to keep himself away from Kang for a while to safeguard her.
It is not a long pull.
Unable to ignore his feelings any longer, Se-gye finally confesses the truth. He admits she has taken over his thoughts and that he needs her in his life. The admission of emotion leads to a long-awaited kiss, finishing the episode in a satisfying and romantic manner.## Summary
Episode 9 works because it’s not about the reincarnation mystery, but the emotional journeys of its characters. Mun-do becomes one of the drama’s most tragic characters, a man so jealous that he repeatedly chooses resentment over happiness. His obsession with competing against Se-gye overshadows every chance to reconnect with family or find peace.
Se-gye, in comparison, is refreshingly real. He always follows his heart and never lets anyone else make choices for him, which puts him up there as one of the most lovable male leads in K-dramas in recent history. Even when confronted with painful truths, he keeps moving forward instead of getting stuck in bitterness.
The episode also deserves credit for how it deals with Se-gye’s emotional struggles. Nam-jun’s inner struggles are both believable and engaging, due to strong writing, confident direction and an excellent performance from Nam-jun.
In Episode 9, secrets spill out and relationships reach breaking point, setting the stage for a dramatic final push of the season.
