Episode 3 of Teach You A Lesson is one of the strongest stories in the series, highlighting the devastating impact of cyberbullying, social media manipulation and false accusations within the education system.
The episode begins with a heart-breaking glimpse into the past. During one of his military leave periods, Ga-yun is seen having time with Hwa-jin before her tragic death. That peaceful outing shows what a kind and brave person she was and makes the events that follow all the more terrible.
The story then goes back to the trial of Ga-yun’s killer, Cho Gyu-cheol. He confesses to the murder, saying that he did it out of love, and because he is a minor he is given a relatively light sentence. The ruling leaves Hwa-jin furious and emotionally devastated. In a fit of grief, he tries to take justice into his own hands outside the courthouse before Gang-seok stops him.
Years later, Gang-seok lays out his long-term vision for educational reform, saying he would create the Educational Rights Protection Bureau (ERPB) once he has enough political clout. That is the foundation of the bureau’s mission today.# An Educator Damaged by Social Media
Back to present time, the ERPB starts to look into a disturbing case at Soyeon Girls’ School. A teacher has killed himself after being accused of sexually harassing a student, and another teacher is being abused online.
The investigation focuses on Han Ye-ri, a student influencer with a massive online following. Ye-ri’s revenge on her teacher, Jung Seon-yeong, for telling her to stop livestreaming in class is to edit footage to make it look like the teacher is mistreating students.
The manipulated content proliferates on the internet, ruining the teacher’s reputation.
Things get out of hand when Homeroom Teacher Ko Yeong-su tries to break it up. Rather than collaborating, Ye-ri posts another video accusing him of sexual misconduct. The accusation goes viral on social media and he is forced to resign. He finally commits suicide because he can’t take the public shaming and cyberbullying.
Ye-ri continues to wield her power as a weapon even after her death. Then she turns her attention to Ms. Jung, fostering an environment where online harassment is a normal part of school life.Han-rim joins ERPB
The heat is on in the investigation, and Hwa-jin recruits a new member to the ERPB team, former soldier Im Han-rim.
Han-rim immediately starts asserting his dominance. She arrives at the school disguised as a trainee teacher and immediately sees the lack of respect the students show for Ms. Jung. Her tough-love approach quickly disrupts the poisonous culture that has been permitted to flourish within the school.
The Ministry of Education installs surveillance systems across the campus, and Han-rim confiscates student phones and cuts off their ability to coordinate online harassment behind the scenes.
In the meantime, Hwa-jin asks teachers to be honest in reporting incidents even if school administrators want to downplay the problem.# The Secret Campaign Against Ms. Jung
With technical assistance from Geun-de, the ERPB discovers a disturbing network of private posts and messages mocking Ms. Jung. She doesn’t know but for months many of the students have been mocking her on the internet.
Ms. Jung is crushed by the findings. She’s already dealing with the fallout from the rumors flying around town and is starting to wonder if she can teach at all.
Even her attempts to find work outside the school are met with rejection, her damaged reputation following her wherever she goes.
Ye-ri and her friends suddenly become friendly with Ms. Jung unexpectedly. The teacher sees this as progress, but Han-rim senses something far more calculated is going on.
She is right, in her suspicions.
Later, Ye-ri asks Ms. Jung to do a livestream, hoping to pressure her into publicly condemning the ERPB. The emotional toll becomes too much and Ms. Jung has a panic attack.
Hwa-jin tells Ga-yun’s story in this vulnerable moment and that several students secretly contacted the ERPB to help protect their teacher. The revelation is a reminder to Ms. Jung that not all the students are against her.# Ms. Jung Hits Back At Last
Ms. Jung went back to the classroom with a new sense of confidence, inspired by what Hwa-jin had said.
When Ye-ri pushes for the livestream again, Ms. Jung refuses firmly. She also asserts control over the classroom for the first time, refusing to be cowed by disruptive behavior.
It is a turning point for the teacher and the investigation.
Meanwhile, the ERPB gets irrefutable proof that Ye-ri fabricated the charges against Mr. Ko. The evidence is out there, the truth is out, the false narrative she built using social media is destroyed.
For the first time, Ye-ri is faced with the ramifications of her actions.# A Bloody Meeting
Ye-ri, unable to handle the fall of her online influence and public image, spirals out of control.
She visits Ms. Jung’s apartment and threatens her with a knife. Ms. Jung falls from a balcony during the struggle, but Hwa-jin comes in time to save her life.
And when Han-rim intervenes, things get even more intense. She wounds her own hand in the process, but succeeds in stopping Ye-ri without violence.
Instead of letting the student slip away through self-destruction, Han-rim forces her to face the reality of her deeds and the harm she has done.# Review of Episode 3
In episode 3, the show addresses the current issues of social media accountability, online harassment and the destructive impact of false accusations. The story line feels particularly pertinent in an age when public opinion can too often be formed before the facts have been fully investigated.
The success of the introduction of Han-rim is great. Her military background, no-nonsense personality, and tireless commitment to justice will be a tremendous asset to the ERPB team.” Her chemistry with Hwa-jin also gives the series a shot of new energy.
Ms. Jung has the emotional centerpiece of the episode. It’s one of the show’s best character arcs to date, to see her go from fear and isolation to confidence and resilience.
The wider political contest over the ERPB also starts to take shape. With Gang-seok’s adversaries prepared to take on the organization and probe its objectives, upcoming episodes appear set to investigate if the bureau can withstand heightened public scrutiny.
Teach You A Lesson has built up pace through three episodes to go on and do so. A serious social message blended with emotional storytelling makes the drama both entertaining and thought-provoking, and leaves viewers wondering what challenges the ERPB will face next.
