Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias is back for its fifth season, but longtime viewers quickly noticed the absence of one of the show’s most recognizable characters. There is a simple reason why Ty isn’t here. Actor Carson Rowland decided to leave the series to pursue new career opportunities.
Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson said Rowland’s departure was a personal choice, as she wanted to pursue other projects outside of “Sweet Magnolias.” Since his departure from the Netflix drama, the actor has landed roles in several major projects including Ryan Murphy’s series The Beauty and the upcoming film The Queen’s Jewels.
Meanwhile, Rowland is starting a new chapter in his personal life as he recently became a father, despite his budding acting career.
His departure certainly leaves a big hole in the series, but Anderson has left the door open for a possible return. If Netflix renews Sweet Magnolias for a Season 6 and schedules permit, Ty may return to Serenity.## Why Ty was absent in Season 5
So instead of just writing the character off completely, the writers made Ty’s absence part of the story.
Ty is revealed in season 5 to be off overseas pursuing his music career. Instead of going home, he stays in Copenhagen, working with a new group of musicians and moving forward with his future in the industry.
But his decision to stay overseas is not without consequences. Ty is due back for Annie’s high school graduation, but never makes the journey, leaving those closest to him disappointed and several characters emotionally affected.
The storyline allows the series to move on while still acknowledging that Ty is still part of the Sweet Magnolias universe.## What Annie’s Life Is Like Without Ty
Perhaps the most important effect of Ty’s absence is on his relationship with Annie.
After years of friendship, romantic tension and fan anticipation, the two finally became a couple in Season 4. But their relationship ran into trouble when Ty asked Annie to put her own ambitions on the back burner and come overseas with him.
Instead, Annie decided to chase her dreams in photography, to put her future first. Geographic separation pretty much kills their romantic relationship when Ty is in Europe for all of season 5.
Many viewers were rooting for the relationship, but the season took Ty’s absence to give Annie more autonomy. She pursues new possibilities, prioritizes her own development, and starts creating a future that isn’t tied to him.## Will Ty be Back in Season 6?
There’s been no official word on Ty’s future on the series so far. However, the character was not written out for good, so if the story required a return, the door was left open for a comeback.
Sweet Magnolias Season 5 continues on without one of its original stars for now, but it leaves space for other characters to develop and take center stage.
