Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Episode 4 focuses on personal struggles, family relationships and new opportunities as the residents of Serenity continue to navigate major changes in their lives.
The first scene shows Helen taking Jessica into her house after finding out that the girl is facing family problems. Erik hesitates to talk about the situation with his brother, Victor, but Helen soon realizes Jessica needs support and stability.
Meanwhile, Maddie and Cal have a light-hearted chat about his superstitions on game day. Maddie tells him that maybe it’s time to start some new traditions, as he prepares for the upcoming alumni game.
At Sullivan’s, Annie thanks her family for the celebration they arranged. Ronnie also gives her a thoughtful gift and suggests they spend some quality time together, father and daughter, before she leaves town. But then things don’t quite pan out the way Annie expects.
The next day there’s a bunch of new developments all over Serenity. Clark brushes off a raccoon problem that’s driving Dana Sue crazy, but quickly gets flirtatious. Elsewhere, Helen introduces Jessica to some of the community members, including Noreen, who extols the kindness and generosity that characterize the Magnolias.
Kyle and the drama club start rehearsals, but it soon becomes clear that one of the cast members might be trouble for the production. Paula meanwhile visits Maddie and tells her not to think too much about the career she left behind in New York. Instead, she encourages her daughter to discover a new passion and welcome new opportunities.
Isaac comes up with some creative ideas to boost sales at the restaurant, including adding to the drink menu. It’s impressive to both Cal and Erik and shows that he’s getting more confident and more of a leader.
Jessica and Annie unexpectedly become friends as the preparations for the alumni game continue. Their bond develops quickly and Jessica finds a sense of belonging during a hard time in her life.
Friendships are made, and a few relationships have problems. As the wedding plans continue Helen becomes more and more stressed particularly as Erik seems unsure over many of the big decisions. And the pressure begins to tell on her.
Annie is also bummed to learn that her one-on-one time with Ronnie has turned into a bigger group activity. When Dana Sue hears about it, she pulls Ronnie aside and reminds him that his daughter should come first in his life.
Elsewhere, Maddie urges Beatriz to keep chasing her dreams and not give up. Helen and Noreen also work together to bring together some older members of the community to discuss re-establishing the local art guild.
Jessica’s personal life is brought to the forefront when she confesses that watching Helen and Erik together reminds her of her parents, who are divorcing. What Erik discovers in his brother’s household horrifies him. The next day he and Helen assure Jessica that she can stay with them as long as she needs to.
Maddie and her family develop a sweet ritual that brings them closer together before the big game. Later the Magnolias get together for margarita night and each woman shares her worries. Helen’s mind is on Jessica’s future and Erik’s complicated family situation. Maddie hopes Cal can pull the team out for the win and Dana Sue is still peeved with Ronnie’s recent behavior.
Finally, game day comes and the whole town turns out. Dana Sue is pumping up the crowd, Ronnie and Courtney are using the event to promote their business and Annie bumps into Noah again.
The alumni game is a win for Serenity, but the opposing coach tries to diminish the accomplishment by saying the team only won because of Cal’s professional playing background.
Fueled by the community buzz, Dana Sue comes up with a bold business plan. She considers to bid for the Bellwethers’ place and start a new establishment with her friends. But the celebration is cut short when Courtney and Ronnie get into a heated argument. Later Ronnie dismisses the confrontation as just a business disagreement.
The episode ends with two important notes. Blake asks Annie out first, which gives her friends lots of material to tease her with. Second, Cal’s old friend Jodie arrives with a surprise visit and a proposal that could alter the trajectory of his life.## Opinion
Sweet Magnolias has pacing issues four episodes into the season. The series still has its trademark warmth and sense of community, but too many storylines feel recycled and lacking in urgency.
The biggest problem is in the character development of Erik. Erik was one of the more emotionally intelligent characters on the show in seasons past. He was open with his communication and always had the backs of those around him. But this season he has seemed out of sorts, strangely unwilling to discuss matters of moment. The storylines he’s in right now feel rushed and underdeveloped so it’s difficult to really get into it.
Jessica was brought in as someone who could be a big part of the season, but the character hasn’t done much of anything other than create some temporary emotional conflict. Also, Courtney is not used enough and she is the center of tension between Ronnie and Dana Sue.
The most promising development of the episode is Jodie’s arrival. Her connection to Cal adds a new layer of mystery and could finally give the season the fresh direction it needs.
Episode 4 does provide a couple of touching moments and some decent character work but the season still seems to be lacking a strong central narrative.
