Episode 10, as a season finale, offers plenty of warmth and optimism, but it’s lacking the dramatic oomph that viewers might expect from a closing chapter.
Many of the story lines are resolved with little conflict and there is little suspense or emotional tension. Instead of actual character development, the season tends to revert to lengthy, inspirational conversations, which results in a few retreads. Serenity is still presented as a near-utopian community where problems are quickly solved through goodwill and understanding.
It’s a satisfying payoff for Erik and Helen’s relationship, the wedding, but there are a number of other characters who appear largely unchanged by the events of the season. Dana Sue’s arc finally brings in some real uncertainty, but much of the season plays it safe.
Season 5 overall is one of the weakest runs of the series. It’s still comforting and uplifting, but without real stakes and major character development, it can’t reach the emotional highs that made previous seasons so compelling.
