Flashback shows Rumi tricking Toru into revealing sensitive account information and compromising the channel. When confronted however Rumi disclaims all responsibility and plays as if she knows nothing of the situation.
Meanwhile, Rumi starts to suspect that her manager, Kimishima, may have been involved in the sabotage. He says he’s trying to help her grow her online presence, but his actions suggest there’s more going on behind the scenes.# A New Direction for the Channel?
After the attack, Toru and Aki meet up with Shimura to discuss what’s next for their content once they recover. Instead of just chasing views, Shimura provides a new solution: outing streamers and influencers who use violence and harassment to get attention online.
Shimura turns again to his enigmatic Internet guru Tou-kei as he contemplates his next move. Tou-kei uploads a video on how to survive multi-opponent fights by coincidence. The lesson is less about brute strength, and more about strategy, intimidation, and mental warfare.
These teachings soon prove important as Shimura comes face to face with yet another confrontation.# Strange goings-on at the hospital
Besides the main story, viewers also get a few glimpses of Shimura’s mother visiting him in the hospital. She meets the director of the hospital and they have a pleasant meeting but as soon as she leaves, the pleasant expression leaves his face.
The brief scene suggests hidden motives and hints that the director may be important later in the series.## Shimura vs. Bullies of the Influencer Age
The scene then shifts to Kabukicho, where the same social media influencers from the previous attack are live streaming public pranks to gain views.
Shimura, determined to stop them, disguises himself and confronts the duo. He tries Tou-kei’s psychological tactics first, but he is caught bluffing when his hidden shoe lifts are exposed.
The livestream chat immediately turns on him, filling up with criticism and ridicule.
Shimura fights bravely, but the fight becomes too much for him. His confidence is broken and he runs away for a moment, but he pulls himself together and continues the fight. With the help of his friends, the trio eventually regains control of their channel and their stolen account.
Back home, Shimura uploads a new video and donations start pouring in from viewers, proving that his audience still supports him.# Enter Reo Shinjo.
Just when things are looking up, a much bigger threat shows up.
The newest challenger is Shinjo Reo, a former taekwondo champion who left school. Shinjo is not like any opponent we’ve fought before. He can really fight and has a reputation to be feared.
Aki attempts to negotiate with him but Shinjo responds with violence. He attacks Toru and coerces Shimura into a fight that could generate massive online income.
The encounter lands Toru in the hospital and rattles Shimura more than any battle before.# Questions, Fears and Commitment
While convalescing in the hospital, Toru reminds Shimura of how much his courage has inspired others. He remembers how Shimura had stood up to Hamaken, and how he changed the lives of powerless people.
Shimura is afraid to face Shinjo, but he is encouraged anyway. There are rumors that the fighter is unstable, even dangerous, that maybe he killed someone in his past.
Shimura considers just abandoning the channel altogether for a while.
But, looking back at all he’s accomplished, he makes a surprising choice. He agrees to fight Shinjo but on his own terms, and with the future of the channel at stake.# Preparing for the biggest fight of your life
Knowing he has little chance of winning by strength alone, Shimura seeks training from Ogi Tatsuya.
Even Ogi himself is not sure if he can defeat Shinjo, unfortunately. Still, Shimura throws himself into intense preparation despite the pessimism. During this period he receives another timely lesson from Tou-kei who again offers advice that is perfectly suited to the challenge ahead.
Meanwhile, a few other storylines continue to develop as Shimura trains. His relationship with Asamiya grows stronger, Rumi is increasingly desperate for followers, and mysterious figures continue to watch Shimura’s rise on the internet.# The Battle Against Shinjo Begins
One month later the long-anticipated battle finally comes.
The fight instantly shows the vast difference between the two contestants. Shinjo is faster, stronger and more experienced.
Shimura, unable to win a straight fight, relies on trickery, mind games and unorthodox methods picked up from Tou-kei. His strategy works in short bursts and gives him the advantage.
At one point he almost wins with a choke hold. But Shinjo breaks away and counterattacks savagely.
As the fight continues, Shimura takes an incredible beating. The crowd gets worried about his safety, particularly when Shinjo has a disturbing flashback of a bloody body.
The episode ends with a barely conscious Shimura with Shinjo standing over him, leaving viewers to wonder whether he will live.# Closing Remarks
Episode 4 broadens the world of Viral Hit nicely and introduces one of the series’ most interesting villains. Shinjo Reo is instantly more threatening than any foe before him, bringing genuine peril to the story.
The episode continues to focus on the unseen mentor Tou-kei, whose advice informs Shimura’s growth as a fighter and as a person.
It’s a well paced episode throughout with a good balance of character development, mystery and action and ends with a tense cliffhanger that leaves the audience with a lot to look forward to in the next chapter.
