Episode 4 peels back another layer of the mystery surrounding Matthew’s disappearance and for the first time it looks like David may not be the central target after all. With new evidence coming to light and old relationships being re-examined, the series starts to focus on an unexpected figure whose past may have started the whole nightmare.# Reigniting a Relationship
The episode jumps back eight years ago, the time when Rachel and Hayden’s relationship has already ended romantically. After the split, Rachel was a trusted friend and supporter, helping Hayden prepare for a charity event as he fought to win over his sceptical mother.
Hayden tried to get their relationship back, realizing that he still had feelings for Rachel. But Rachel chose to keep the friendship they had built rather than risk losing it completely. This flashback gives the emotional depth to their complicated dynamic and how Hayden continues to stand by her in the present day.## The investigation takes a new turn
Fast forward to today, Rachel is in FBI custody, and investigators are still looking for answers. Meanwhile, Hilde is determined to protect David, but her efforts only serve to increase the suspicion of federal agents.
David, Hayden and their allies start to dig up old records that have to do with Matthew’s kidnapping. What they discover raises more questions than it answers. Hospital administrator Ronald Dreason had said Cheryl was called into work because of a bus accident the night Matthew disappeared.
There’s just one problem. The accident never occurred.
The revelation immediately puts Ronald under suspicion. Lenny shows Cheryl the evidence but she refuses to believe that her husband could be involved. Ronald’s story is falling apart, obviously.# The Trap of Washington Park.
Determined to uncover the truth, David and Hilde set a trap for Skunk, the mob fixer with ties to the Fisher family.
The operation quickly descends into pandemonium.
Skunk arrives and David attacks him, hoping to beat the answers out of him. But then there is gunfire. One of the biggest surprises of the season so far comes when Hilde is shot and killed in the confrontation.
Skunk tries to run away but David catches him before he is able to escape. Skunk under pressure finally coughs up a vital piece of info. Lenny already knows why the Fisher family went after David’s loved ones, he says.
That statement completely changes the direction of the investigation.## Rachel Will Not Walk Away
Hayden is able to get Rachel out with the help of an expensive attorney, but she has no intention of leaving David behind.
Hayden wants her to be safe, but Rachel believes David is the only one who can find Matthew. Her loyalty puts her smack in the middle of the growing conflict between David and the Fisher organization.
Meanwhile, FBI agents have found David’s latest hide-out. With the help of Rachel and Hayden, he narrowly escapes capture again. ## Ronald’s History
Another breakthrough occurs when Lenny and Philip find a former prison worker who provides insight into Ronald’s past.
She said Ronald was set to blow the lid off a huge Medicare fraud scheme when he suddenly claimed amnesia and backed out of his testimony. Now investigators suspect he was pressured into silence by powerful forces.
This explains some of Ronald’s suspicious behavior, but still does not answer the biggest question. Why was Matthew targeted, to begin with?
The answer felt like it was connected to something deep in Lenny’s past. ### A Surprising Family Connection
Hayden is one of the biggest surprises of the episode.
During a regular call from his mother, viewers learn Hayden’s mother is actually Gertrude. The revelation immediately casts suspicion as Gertrude seems now tied to quite a few players in the larger conspiracy.
The mystery of her role deepens further when she is shown to have photographs that link Hayden and David together.
It’s unclear if she is secretly protecting someone or helping orchestrate events, but her importance to the story can no longer be denied.# Sarah Understands at Last
Sarah continues to analyze the mysterious Six Flags photograph that has baffled investigators in the episode.
In the last act, she recognizes Matthew in the picture.
The find could be one of the biggest breakthroughs of the season, and may finally get the FBI closer to understanding what really happened.# Explanation of the Ending
The episode concludes with another huge cliffhanger.
Lenny is sorting through an old file on Liam Fisher when a stranger suddenly shoves a gun to his head. The scene makes it clear that Lenny knows something that could blow the lid off the real story of the Fisher family feud.
For weeks the show had been leading viewers to believe that David was the main target. Episode 4 flips that assumption on its head. Evidence is building that Lenny’s past actions may have set in motion the chain of events that led to Matthew’s disappearance.# Critique
Episode 4 is packed with revelations, twists and emotional fallout. While the story sometimes gets too complicated, the constant flow of new information keeps the suspense alive.
With Hilde’s death, the stakes are raised significantly, and Skunk’s comments suggest a much larger mystery involving Lenny and the Fisher family. Another effective surprise is the reveal of Gertrude, expanding the show’s web of secrets.
The series still depends quite heavily on misdirection and characters are often presented as suspects before being cleared. The technique keeps the audience guessing but can become predictable if used too often.
But the episode succeeds where it matters most. It leaves viewers with new questions to ask, meaningful revelations and a compelling reason to come back for the next chapter.
