In episode 3 of I Will Find You the mystery is taken to another level with new twists, hidden agendas and a major revelation that could change everything David believes about his son. The investigation widens, and more people become entangled in a tangled web of lies that stretches back years.## A Memory of the Fourth of July Raises New Questions
The episode opens with a flashback to a 4th of July celebration in 2021. Rachel is quite clear that she doesn’t want to rekindle her relationship with Hayden. Skunk, an old classmate, watches David and Adam from a distance at the celebration. “You look like the kind of guy who’d join up with Nicky Fisher’s criminal enterprise,” Adam jokes, and both Philip and Lenny visibly wince.
At first the short moment appears insignificant, but later it is a key piece of the puzzle.## David and Rachel Continue Their Hunt
Back in the present, David and Rachel watch Hilde’s post office box while the FBI closes in on them. Agent Simmons discovers that they will be working in New York, but Cheryl fails to mention that she recently spoke with Rachel. Her husband Ron is concerned about her decision and fears she may be putting herself in danger.
Meanwhile, tensions within the FBI task force continue to escalate. Agent Chopra talks about moving to Seattle and advises Sarah to tell Agent Williams the truth before someone else does. The conversation adds another layer to the personal drama that is growing inside the bureau.### The Real Story of Matthew’s First Investigation
One of the episode’s biggest surprises comes from Philip and Lenny: Finally they tell what happened on the night Matthew went missing.
Years before, a 911 operator recognized David’s name and tipped off Lenny in secret before other authorities arrived. Philip and Lenny thought David killed Matthew and acted first, hiding crucial evidence, including the baseball bat used in the case. They were trying to protect their family, but they may have blown the investigation from the very beginning.
The confession throws into question everything we thought we knew about Matthew’s death.## Cheryl Finds Out the Truth
Rachel calls Cheryl while David and Rachel wait to make their next move. Their relationship is still tense, but Rachel finally lets slip the bombshell that Matthew may still be alive.
Cheryl can’t handle the revelation. She breaks the conversation off, trying to comprehend what she has heard. At the charity gala, a woman named Gertrude comforts her, appearing supportive, but perhaps with motives of her own.## More Confusion Over Missing Body
Meanwhile, another shocking discovery rocks the investigation.
Authorities arrive at the cemetery to find Matthew’s body missing from his grave. A groundskeeper spots Adam’s car parked nearby and he’s an immediate suspect.
But when Philip and Lenny confront him, Adam says he was trying to verify the identity of the remains himself. He said that when he arrived the grave had already been emptied. Whether or not he is telling the truth is unknown, but his explanation opens up a disturbing possibility – someone else put out the body first.## Hilde Discovers an Important Link
Meanwhile back in New York, David gets through to Hilde, while Rachel distracts the feds on purpose.
David corners Hilde and she finally tells him why she gave false testimony years ago. Her daughter had fallen into serious gambling debts, and someone had offered to clear those debts in return for her cooperation.
Skunk, who was now working for crime boss Nicky Fisher, was behind the setup.
This revelation ties together multiple storylines and suggests that powerful individuals have been pulling the strings of Matthew’s case all along.## The Near Miss
Rachel’s distraction gives David the time he needs to get the truth, but it also places Rachel right in the hands of the FBI. She is arrested for aiding and abetting a murderer and helping David escape the law.
Agents storm Hilde’s apartment and David barely escapes. Sarah gives chase, across the adjoining roofs, and nearly catches him. But she is unable to prevent David from disappearing again.
Afterwards Hilde calls Skunk, obviously scared David will come back with more questions.## The Conspiracy Grows
The story of the gala also turns interesting. Cheryl begins her medical program and Gertrude, the rich owner of the Payne Foundation, gives a lot of money.
Cheryl promises Ron she will tell the FBI everything she knows, but in the end she says nothing.
Then comes the revelation of an even more suspicious link. We see corrupt FBI agent Stephano riding with Gertrude, suggesting the two might be working behind the scenes. Their conversation suggests a frustration that David remains at liberty, and points to a much larger conspiracy.## The Revelation That Will SHOCK You
The episode saves the biggest surprise for its last moments.
Hayden finds David and offers him a temporary refuge. Rachel’s still in custody, and Agent Williams is trying to pick up the pieces after the failed rooftop chase. The show then reveals Williams to be Sarah’s father, explaining their unusually close relationship throughout the season.
But the final twist is bigger.
A young boy is called to supper by a woman off-screen. The audience soon realizes that he is the same kid from a mysterious photo shown earlier in the series.
If that is the right identification, the boy could actually be Matthew.# Recap of Episode 3
Episode 3 greatly expands the mystery while still managing to answer some long-standing questions. The fact that Matthew’s body disappeared before Adam arrived adds another layer of uncertainty and makes it hard to know who can be trusted.
The Skunk/Nicky Fisher reveal finally makes sense of several seemingly unrelated storylines, giving the larger conspiracy of the season a clearer shape. Meanwhile Gertrude is turning into one of the most suspicious characters in the series. Her links to powerful groups and corrupt officials point to her possibly being far more involved than she seems.
The subplot of Sarah and Agent Williams gets some development with the father-daughter reveal, but it is not as compelling as the central mystery of Matthew.
In short, Episode 3 is packed with suspense, revelations and an ending that leaves more questions than answers. If the boy in the last scene really is Matthew, then the whole investigation could be based on a lie that has been going on for years.
