The episode starts with a flashback 5 years ago in Geneva. Detective Muller saves the life of a young orphan named Martin Bischof and puts him in an orphanage. Shortly after Martin mysteriously disappears.
Sarah is now following a new trail of missing boys who are all unidentified, but could have been part of the elaborate cover up of Matthew’s supposed death. Muller begins to think that Martin could have been part of the deception. It gets more interesting when they find out that the orphanage where Martin lived was run by a family connected to Boston.
The more evidence starts pointing towards a larger conspiracy the more credible the idea that Matthew never died becomes.# David’s story finally goes to the public
Now that Rachel is out of the story, Jim releases David’s version of the story. The story has a number of details Rachel found out, such as David’s trip to Boston and his belief that Matthew is still alive.
Meanwhile, Sarah and Williams have a quick briefing with their supervisor Julie on the latest developments in the investigation. Ballistics tests prove that it was Skunk who killed Hilde, but Sarah makes the controversial decision to let Skunk go, hoping that Skunk will lead the authorities straight to David.
It’s a gamble, but Sarah believes that apprehending David could ultimately expose the truth behind the larger operation.# Family Tensions Grow
Hayden, meanwhile, has problems continue to pile up.
Gertrude publicly disassociates him from Rachel and tries to protect the family from further legal troubles. She insists that Rachel was aiding a fugitive and that Hayden was unaware of this. She claims that Rachel stole his gun.
Hayden is angry. The statement might protect the family’s reputation, but it also makes him vulnerable to further legal investigation.
Gertrude remains one of the most suspect characters in the show, but her real agenda remains maddeningly opaque.# Boston Has New Discoveries
David and Rachel break into Lenny’s house looking for answers, but he’s not home.
Instead they speak to Aunt Sophie, who tells them of two great developments. First of all, Lenny has cancer. Second, Ron lied about what happened the night of the bus crash.
Those revelations immediately raise new questions about who can trust who.
On the way to Boston with Sarah and Williams, Sarah starts to doubt if David is truly innocent. Williams reminds her that their job is to catch suspects, not to decide if they’re guilty or innocent.
David and Rachel narrowly escape the federal agents who show up at Sophie’s house by hiding in a closet. During the search they find a file related with Nicky’s son Liam Fisher.
Sophie, knowing David needs time to escape, sacrifices herself by allowing authorities to arrest her for withholding information on where Lenny is.# David’s Risky Bet
David pursues a reckless scheme, convinced Nicky has the vital answers.
When David hears that Nicky went missing years ago, he looks up Nicky’s daughter, Lena, and gets her to contact her father. David finds out on the call that Nicky is hiding close to the coast, which appears to link with earlier clues about Theo.
But the plan soon unravels.
David tries to take the advantage, but Skunk and his men surround him. Distracted, David is attacked by Lena who incapacitates him with a taser.
Just as execution seems imminent, Adam suddenly shows up.
The rescue is a surprise but quickly turns into something far more devastating.Adam Swears His Allegiance
One of the biggest moments of the episode is when Adam reveals he’s been working for Nicky all along.
Adam tells David that Nicky wants to talk to him face to face instead of rescuing him.
This is a bitter blow as Adam has always seemed one of David’s few remaining allies. Adam claims he never had a choice, echoing the sentiments of other characters throughout the series.
His explanation only adds to the mystery of Nicky’s reach and influence.
If Adam has worked for Nicky for years, how many other people are working for him in secret?# Cheryl Finally Finds out the Truth
David strikes a deal with Nicky’s organisation while Rachel finds Ron and confronts him about his long concealed secret.
Ron admits he lied about the bus accident, because he loved Cheryl. He’d decided to spend the night with her, rather than tell her the truth about where he’d been.
Cheryl is devastated by the confession.
Later, she confides in Rachel about the difficulties in her marriage to David, including infertility that slowly separated them. At a vulnerable time in her life, his attention made her feel valued.
But she regrets her choices.
Now that Rachel has finally shown Cheryl the photograph that indicates Matthew might still be alive, everything is different. Cheryl has reason to hope, for the first time in years.# A New Lead Appears
Rachel digs further and finds out there was a Payne family event at Six Flags around the time Matthew was supposedly seen alive.
Hayden has agreed to let us see official photographs from the event, which might contain crucial evidence.
But clearly someone is keeping track of their progress.
Stephano witnesses their meeting and tells Gertrude later that Hayden will not find out the truth. Shortly afterwards Gertrude meets with Julie, introducing another suspicious link between major players in the story.# The Chase Ends in a Bloodbath
Eventually the FBI finds another important piece of the puzzle.
It seemed, according to the files, that Philip and Lenny had arrested Liam Fisher years ago. Liam died later in prison, which could have given Nicky a motive to kill some of the Burroughs family.
Shortly after, the police find out that David is being moved to a private airstrip.
There was a violent chase.
The cars crash. The bullets fly. Things get out of hand fast. At the confrontation, Williams tells Sarah to shoot David if he tries to escape.
Skunk shoots at Williams before she can move.
Sarah, in a rage, strikes back and kills Skunk, but the diversion enables David and Adam to board a waiting jet and flee.
The episode ends with David arriving in Florida, Nicky greeting him with a punch to the face and a message that the real fight is just beginning.## Conclusion
Episode 5 brings us the biggest twist of the season so far, as Adam shocks everyone with his betrayal. In hindsight, the reveal actually makes sense, especially considering how many characters have hinted that Nicky controls people through fear and obligation.
The episode also puts a serious dent in Ron’s version of events. His explanation is almost too convenient and there could be so much more to his connection with Nicky than viewers currently know.
The one story line that continues to irritate is that of Gertrude. The series keeps telling viewers how dangerous and influential she is, but rarely gives her enough screen time to prove it. There are only a few episodes left and the show needs to finally reveal her part in the larger conspiracy.
That criticism aside, Episode 5 does a good job of expanding the mystery while delivering major character driven moments. With Adam double-crossing, the evidence that Matthew has survived mounting and David about to confront Nicky, it’s shaping up to be a dramatic second half of the series.## Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
