The episode begins five years earlier with yet another piece of the intricate cover-up of Matthew’s supposed murder. It is shown how Stephano and Gertrude manipulate things so that David is the perfect scapegoat.
Gertrude reminds Dr. Heller of a past scandal that she helped him bury, putting him under pressure. The exchange makes it clear that it is not friendship that keeps Heller loyal, but the leverage that Gertrude has over him.
In the present day, panic begins to spread among those involved in the conspiracy. Heller quickly wipes evidence from his computer and prepares to vanish. Meanwhile Theo’s nanny drops the bomb that they have to leave straight away, implying that people are getting too close to discovering the truth.# David will not quit
Meanwhile, Hayden gets bad news from his lawyer in jail. The legal position appears hopeless unless he continues to follow Gertrude’s instructions.
When Hayden gets out, he leaves an emotional voicemail for Rachel. He is sorry to work with law enforcement and at last confesses feelings he has kept quiet for years.
With Hayden dealing with his situation, David focuses on Finding answers. Detective Muller and Sarah are working in Boston as the investigation begins to find links that had been overlooked.
One find tops all the rest: Martin, a child involved in the case, disappeared weeks before Matthew’s supposed murder and was from an orphanage funded by the Payne Foundation. The disclosure immediately casts suspicions on Gertrude’s involvement.# New Evidence Points to the Truth
Muller and Sarah keep digging through the records and they learn that Martin had a rare genetic disorder called MLD (Metachromatic Leukodystrophy). The information is important enough for Sarah to push for DNA testing using evidence connected to Matthew.
Sarah rifles through records at the clinic and finds another clue. She learns that David had previously searched for information on Cheryl, meaning there may be more connections than anyone realised.
Meanwhile, REH Holdings’ financial records show suspicious activity. An account was recently drained by a banking transaction in Boston and Muller is taking a tougher stance. He resolves to go to Gertrude, and thinks that if he can put her under pressure she will make a mistake.# Cheryl Drops a Game-Changing Bombshell
The investigation heats up and David and Rachel get an unexpected hand from Ron. Ron sneaks Cheryl and her baby into an empty hospital room, while he looks for Dr. Heller, determined to reunite Cheryl with her child.
While they wait David reaches a personal conclusion. Whatever the results of any future DNA test may be, Matthew is his son in all the ways that count.
Then Cheryl comes along and it all changes drastically.
She is overcome with emotion and apologizes to David for doubting him. But she also reveals something that turns the investigation on its head. Cheryl realizes that she was already pregnant before going to the fertility clinic, so David is Matthew’s biological father.
More importantly, she says Dr. Heller never treated her. Instead, her case was handled by a female doctor.
The discovery challenges a number of assumptions that had guided the investigation and suggests a completely different explanation of what occurred.## Sarah draws nearer
Sarah’s efforts at the hospital run into trouble when Julie suddenly halts the DNA testing. She tells Williams not to help Sarah, and suspends him for not following direct orders.
Williams doesn’t get to explain what happened, as Sarah gets distracted by another development. She arrests Ron, having realised he knows where Cheryl is and is protecting David.
With that realization, Sarah races through the hospital security system. Eventually CCTV footage leads her straight to David, Cheryl and Rachel’s hideout.## The Darkest Secret of Hayden
The biggest breakthrough happens when Cheryl reveals she attended the clinic using the name Rachel Mills.
And suddenly that one detail explained it all.
Rachel and Cheryl must have known whoever took Matthew. Rachel instantly knows there is only one person who fits that description. Hayden.
The last piece of evidence comes when missing photos from a Six Flags trip surface. One is a shocking picture of Hayden holding Matthew’s hand.
The image confirms what many viewers have suspected for weeks.
There was more going on than anyone realized with Hayden.# There is something wrong
As Detective Muller is on the verge of revealing the entire conspiracy, tragedy occurs.
After meeting Gertrude and learning that REH Holdings likely has family origins, Muller leaves the Payne estate with key information.
He never gets to use it.
Hayden kills him before he can continue the investigation, removing one of the most persistent threats to the conspiracy.
The shocking death instantly raises the stakes for the final chapter.
Meanwhile, Sarah manages to find David, Cheryl and Rachel and arrests them before they escape.
The episode ends with the investigation in shambles, and the future uncertain for almost every major character.## Conclusion
Episode 7 does a good job of giving us some much-needed answers, especially with Hayden’s link to Matthew and the mystery of the fertility clinic. The reveal helps propel the story to its conclusion, giving viewers some of the clarity they’ve been waiting for.
Hayden, however, remains the weakest of the show’s major characters. His motives often feel underdeveloped and many of his actions become harder to justify the more information emerges. If his ultimate goal was really to claim Matthew as his own, that goal itself raises a number of questions the series has yet to convincingly answer.
Hayden is not a complex villain, nor is he memorable like Nicky, Adam and Gertrude. He’s more of a plot device than a fully developed character, which undermines some of the episode’s biggest reveals.
Still, Episode 7 is among the most important episodes of the season, thanks to its combination of huge twists, a shocking murder, and several much-needed answers. With the finale on the horizon, the series has a chance to offer a rewarding end to its core mystery.## Judgement: 7.5/10
An excellent penultimate episode, full of twists, revelations and high stakes drama, but Hayden’s weak characterization prevents the story from fully reaching its potential.
