Years of deception, obsession and family secrets come crashing down in dramatic fashion in the final chapter of I Will Find You. After hiding in plain sight for most of the season, Hayden’s carefully constructed fantasy finally unravels as David, Sarah and Rachel embark on a desperate mission to save Matthew.
While the finale is packed with plenty of action and emotional showdowns, some questions about character decisions are left hanging in the air. Still, it offers long-awaited answers about Matthew’s kidnapping and the twisted motivations behind the Payne family.# Hayden’s Secret World Collapses
The episode begins with a flashback showing how Hayden first picked up Matthew. Hayden drugs him and takes the boy to Gertrude Payne’s estate, declaring Matthew is his son. Gertrude is shocked, but Hayden is sure he’s supposed to be with the child.
Back in the present, Hayden tries to cover his tracks after the events of the last episode. There is a clean-up of the evidence and consequences for Stephano and Hayden meets Matthew, who has been living as Theo. The boy appears stuck to Hayden and has complete trust in him, which makes it all the more disturbing.
Meanwhile Gertrude and Stephano start to worry that things are getting out of hand. Stephano suggests killing Matthew to save the family but Gertrude says no. Whatever the reason, she thinks Matthew is essential to the Payne bloodline.# David and Sarah in a Rescue Mission
Sarah is suspended, but she finally believes David’s claims that Matthew is alive. The trick is to prove it before Hayden’s gone for good.
The plan for rescue depends on Rachel. When she realises Hayden is going to run, she sets a trap. She tricks Hayden into thinking the threat on his life is over by spreading false information about David being arrested.
The plan is working.
At the Payne estate, Hayden calls Rachel and asks her to come. David and Sarah sneak into the property another way while Rachel distracts Hayden and Gertrude.
The rescue quickly erupts into violence. Sarah takes out the armed guards that protect the estate and takes down Stephano. David and Sarah locate Matthew and reveal to him the shocking truth of his real identity. Matthew is confused, but he agrees to go with them.

Meanwhile, tensions explode in the Payne family as Rachel waits inside the estate.
Gertrude chastises Hayden for letting his fixation on Rachel cloud his judgement. As they argue heatedly Matthew picks up on an important detail. He is not Theo, he is Matthew Burroughs.
This revelation starts a chain reaction.
Hayden soon discovers that David was never arrested and realizes that Rachel has been lying to him. Enraged, he consents to Gertrude’s plan to kill both Rachel and David.
But before that, Rachel drops an even bigger bombshell. She informs Hayden that Matthew isn’t his biological kid.
The news shatters Hayden’s entire world view.
Gertrude had found out on the sly the truth of a paternity test. She had kept her results secret. She was afraid that if Hayden knew Matthew wasn’t his son, he would leave Matthew. More importantly, she thought Matthew was the last opportunity to save the Payne family legacy.
Hayden feels manipulated and betrayed and eventually turns on the one person who has controlled his life for years. After a violent fight he kills Gertrude, brutally ending her rule over the family. ## How Hayden Became Addicted To Matthew
Finally, the episode exposes Hayden’s disturbing obsession.
He had dreamed for years of a family with Rachel. His resentment grew when he believed she had started a family without him. He did learn eventually that Matthew was not Rachel’s child, but the sight of the boy awoke something in him.
Hayden had convinced himself that it was his fate to be Matthew’s father.
That illusion was the basis of all that followed, including the kidnapping and the complicated plan that enabled him to raise Matthew as his own. Hayden thought he was building the family that had been taken from him.## The Last Fight in the Woods
David, Sarah and Matthew are just about to get away but Hayden manages to take Rachel hostage and regain control of the situation.
Initially, Matthew sacrifices himself for Rachel, but things go haywire when Sarah crashes into Hayden’s car. Everyone chases after Matthew as he bolts into the woods nearby.
The final battle takes place in the trees.
Hayden desperately searches for Matthew, sure that they still belong together. David intercepts him and a violent fight ensues, leaving David wounded by a gunshot.
Finally, Sarah catches Hayden and tells him to give up.
As he is dying Hayden tells Matthew he was the best thing that ever happened to him. He does not accept defeat and launches a final attack. Sarah reacts instantly, and shoots him, ending the nightmare once and for all.# How David finally cleared his name
Another breakthrough happens during the rescue mission.
Philip gets the DNA test results which show that the child found dead earlier in the investigation was not Matthew. Cheryl takes the evidence to Williams who finally realises how badly bungled the investigation has been.
Williams confronts Julie about her meddling in the case and immediately calls in federal agents to help Sarah and David.
With Matthew alive the case against David falls apart. His conviction is overturned and the credibility of the accusations surrounding the murdered police officer fade when Stephano’s involvement with the Paynes is uncovered.
David has fought for years to prove the truth and he is free now.# All Things’ Destiny
The story jumps forward eight months to show what the results were.
David tells of his experience in a public interview, while Rachel writes a book about the ordeal. Cheryl and Ron work on their relationship and give birth to a baby daughter.
Adam loses his badge, and starts over, as a private investigator. David is grateful for his help but their relationship never truly recovers.
Williams leaves active duty but continues to advise Sarah who now runs the Fugitive Task Force in Boston.
One of the most moving moments occurs at Lenny’s funeral. Matthew fights with the crowd and the painful memories of all he has been through. David tries to console him, saying you can’t get the past back but you can make a new beginning together.
The last scene has David telling Matthew that no matter where life takes him, he will always find his way back home.#Final Review
The finale does a nice job of answering questions, tying up most of the major plotlines, but it buckles under the weight of its own twists.
Hayden is depicted as a criminal mastermind and a total incompetent who relies solely on his mother. Those two depictions of the character never quite clicked, which makes his downfall less convincing than it should have been.
It’s another hard pill to swallow, Matthew’s sudden shift in loyalties. So little of his previous life is remembered and his immediate trust in David after years with Hayden takes a big leap of faith from the audience.
That said, the first half of the season built up such great suspense, and the finale provides enough emotional closure to satisfy viewers invested in David’s journey. The problem is that the last episodes sacrifice some logic and character consistency for shocking reveals and last-minute surprises.

An emotional, fast-paced ending that wraps things up but can’t quite match the storytelling power that made the earlier episodes so compelling.
