In the first scene of Episode 5 of Invincible Season 4, Allen and Eve watch from a rooftop as Nolan and Mark have a tense talk. Nolan says again what was said before: the Coalition of Planets is on their side. Mark can’t avoid the fight with the Viltrumites, no matter how much he wants to. Mark doesn’t want to, but he agrees to join the fight. But Nolan wants to make things right with Debbie before he leaves. Nolan says he needs closure when Mark asks him why he did what he did.
At first, Debbie doesn’t say anything, but when Nolan comes and apologizes, she finally says something. She tells him how angry and hurt she is about his betrayal, which includes his affair. Nolan is clearly affected by what she says. She hits him in the chest before she leaves, hurting her hand in the process.
We find out that Tech Jacket is actually a girl named Zoe. She fights crime in advanced alien armor while her dad helps her from a spaceship that is circling Earth. They fight a creature called the Walking Dread together before Allen gets there.
Nolan doesn’t see Oliver, but the family has one last meal together before the Viltrumite battle. Later, Nolan meets Art, but their conversation is short because Art reminds him that he only makes suits for heroes.
Eve, on the other hand, has a secret that she is having trouble with: she is pregnant. She decides not to tell Mark because she knows it might keep him from leaving. Before Mark and Oliver get on the Coalition ship, the episode also has a touching goodbye scene for Paul.
At first, Nolan doesn’t want Oliver to be on board, but Mark talks him into it. He sees this as a chance for Nolan to fix things with his son. Oliver used to look up to him, and Nolan seems to want to win that respect back.
The group is still on edge as the journey begins. But things get worse fast when their ship, the Venture, is attacked and destroyed. Mark and the others come out into space, where they run into Conquest and a few Viltrumites..
Nolan steps in just as Conquest is about to kill Oliver. Mark joins the fight on a nearby planet, where their battle continues. Mark won’t give up, even though he has serious injuries, like having his body ripped open. He finally kills Conquest after a brutal fight, but he is in bad shape.
Now that Conquest is dead, the other Viltrumites start looking for survivors. In the meantime, Allen and the others are hiding in the wreckage of the ship that was destroyed.
Review of the Episode
This episode is a big turning point because the long-awaited fight with the Viltrumites finally starts. Mark’s ability to keep going during his fight with Conquest shows how much he has grown. He is getting stronger and more determined because he was able to win even with such bad injuries.
The balance has changed a little bit now that one Viltrumite is dead, but the bigger war is far from over. The Coalition of Planets might give us hope, but it’s still not clear if they will be strong enough to beat such a strong enemy.
Debbie confronting Nolan is one of the best parts of the episode. Her emotional response gives the story a lot more depth and shows how Nolan’s actions will affect her for a long time. This scene is one of the most powerful character moments of the season.
The episode ends on a very intense note, with a lot of questions still unanswered. It’s clear that this fight is just getting started now that another season has been confirmed.
