Amazon’s ambitious spy thriller Citadel mixes high-stakes espionage, global conspiracies and blockbuster-style action into one of the streaming platform’s most expensive original productions. Since the last season aired, many fans have been speculating if the series would return for another chapter. Here’s what we know so far.
What is Citadel?
Citadel is about a top secret international spy organization called Citadel. After the agency is destroyed, the surviving agents are memory-wiped, and they have no knowledge of who they used to be.
When Citadel falls, a lethal global syndicate called Manticore rises to power. As the world becomes a greater threat, former Citadel operatives must recover their memories, reconnect with their past, and stop Manticore before it takes full control.
There are also international spin-offs that delve even further into the world of Citadel beyond the main series.
Will Citadel Season 3 Be Renewed?
There’s no official renewal for Citadel Season 3 yet from Amazon.
The series debuted with much hype. Audience reception has been mixed. Critics and viewers have been divided and reports about the production have indicated several behind the scenes difficulties.
According to Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, Citadel was reportedly one of the most expensive television projects ever made, with a reported price tag of around $300 million to produce.
Streaming platforms have a few key metrics they tend to look at when it comes to deciding whether to give a show a second season: initial viewership, how well they hold viewers’ engagement, and how many people watch all the way through the season.
Even with heavy promotion and a big budget, Citadel seems to have had a hard time maintaining long-term momentum on Amazon’s Prime Video. Its spinoffs, Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana, also have not been able to grow the franchise’s audience in any significant way.
Also, Amazon MGM Studios is in internal restructuring which may impact future decisions on the franchise.
Based on all that is currently available, the chances of Citadel coming back for Season 3 seem uncertain and, at the moment, relatively unlikely.
What Will Citadel Season 3 Be About?
No official renewal or cancellation announcement has been made, so details of a possible third season are unknown.
If there’s a Season 3, it’ll probably continue the war between Citadel and Manticore, and bring back some of the main cast members for another mission.
But any season down the line will be highly dependent on viewer performance, streaming numbers and Amazon’s long-term plans for the franchise.
