9-1-1: Nashville – Season 1 Episode 6 Recap & Review

The sixth episode of 9-1-1: Nashville begins with what appears to be a normal evening on a party ship with passengers having a good time without a worry in the world. That peace is disrupted when the vessel’s navigation system is suddenly hacked by an unknown attacker.

Panic spreads across the ship and the captain’s daughter quickly makes a call to emergency services and tells them that someone has taken over the ship and is heading for a bridge. Authorities begin evacuating the area immediately but things get even more dangerous when a young boy runs back onto the bridge to rescue his scared dog.

The episode then jumps back two days, with a whiskey tour at the Raleigh Distillery taking a turn for the unexpected. A couple enjoying the experience accidentally tamper with critical valves, starting a dangerous fire.

Station 113 is first to the scene and Hart is in a tough spot as he fights to save his father-in-law Edward’s prized distillery. “The fermenting room is almost 950 gallons of very flammable sour mash,” Cammie says. “So this fire is even more dangerous.” Sadly the hydrants nearby are unexpectedly dry and the team has no choice but to wait for water to be pumped from the nearest river.

Hart has to make the tough choice to drain Edward’s valuable vats before the flames reach them. Edward is angry. He believes Hart did it out of spite, not necessity. Old family wounds were reopened and it wasn’t long before their fractured relationship was evident.

Ryan was cut out of Edward’s will after he decided to become a firefighter instead of joining the family business. Hart has never forgiven Edward for trying to buy Ryan’s future with money and influence. But even with their conflict, Hart is able to stop the distillery from blowing up.

Later Hart receives a call from the Fire Chief with bad news. City emergency services are facing a budget cut and potentially a few firefighter positions could get the axe. The Chief tells Hart to put aside his differences with Edward and get the money to save five firefighters from losing their jobs.

Meanwhile, the 9-1-1 dispatch center is facing some big changes as the mayor brings in a team of efficiency consultants. Their ways instantly create tension, especially for Cammie who is told to stop being so compassionate and make calls shorter.

One dispatcher was fired by the end of the first day, showing that the new leadership is serious about making changes. The pressure mounts as Cammie comes into conflict with the team leader, Ariella, particularly when one of the new protocols almost ends in the death of a young boy.

Tensions rise in the family as Hart joins Blythe and Edward for dinner in an attempt to make peace. The conversation starts calmly but soon spins out of control when Edward demands Hart fire Blue as a condition to help the department with money.

Hart later makes a shocking discovery when he talks to Blue about the situation. He also suspects that Edward may be responsible for the dry hydrants near the distillery. Hart digs deeper and discovers that there are many hydrant violations on Edward’s properties, showing that he is illegally siphoning water to increase production.

Hart tries to use the information to his advantage, but Edward refuses to back down, still believing that Hart was acting out of a personal grudge.

Cammie gets an emergency call from a woman who is choking alone in a hotel room but can’t speak. Ariella tells Cammie to hang up, but Cammie trusts her gut and walks the woman to safety via video link.

Cammie then quits, but is surprised when Ariella apologizes. Ariella unexpectedly admits that she understands the woman’s fear and that she will be there for Cammie from now on. Instead of punishing her, Ariella fires the department’s corrupt supervisor.

This episode also reveals Cammie’s tragic past. “My husband died of choking in a restaurant, and it was a tragedy that made me become a 9-1-1 operator so no one else would have to feel that kind of helplessness by themselves.”

The climax of the episode sees a cyberattack disable all emergency services in the city. There are false alerts happening all over the city and police, firefighters, dispatch are all locked out of their systems.

Emergency sirens suddenly go off at Blythe’s farm, knocking her unconscious and trapping her as she is thrown from her horse.

The hackers then make their demands, asking for $10 million in exchange for restoring the city’s systems. Back to the ship in the first scene, the passengers prepare for what might be a devastating collision.

Review of Episode

Episode 6 is one of the most emotionally charged and intense episodes of the season to date. But between the cyberattack, the family drama of Hart and Edward and Blythe’s near-fatal accident, the fall finale does well to ratchet up the stakes going into the next chapter.

The Hart storyline continues to get stronger and stronger especially with the added family conflict that gives his character more emotional depth. Meanwhile, Cammie finally gets the spotlight she deserves, and her backstory adds meaningful context to her dedication as a dispatcher.

All in all, the episode does a great job of balancing action, suspense and emotional storytelling, and sets up what should be a dramatic return for the second half of the season.
