Dong-hyun cut short his leave and has returned to duty at Ganglim Outpost. Meanwhile, Seong-jae reaches another milestone in the Chef’s Path system, advancing to the intermediate level.
The upgrade grants him some nice new abilities, like faster knife skills and a new Gourmet Rating feature. This skill allows him to see how highly people would rate food and he quickly learns that the highest critic he can reach is no other than Regimental Commander Won-young.
At the same time, Seong-jae gets frustrated with his cooking progress. He makes great food, but every dish he turns out is capped at four stars. His latest goal is to create a five-star masterpiece.
Invitation to the Officers’ Mess.
Chun-ik called Seok-ho to the Officers’ Mess for a promotion party. Ye-rin and Seong-jae are also invited to come to the meeting.
At the event, Commander Won-young publicly commends Seong-jae for raising the morale of Ganglim Outpost by cooking. The Chef’s Path system’s immediate reaction is to assign a new mission to prepare a five-star dish to impress Won-young during the celebration.
This puts Seong-jae in an unfamiliar place – the Officers’ Mess.
A Tough First Day in a New Kitchen
Corporal Lee Ho-yeong runs the Officers’ Mess with his veteran culinary team. They are not overtly hostile, but they are far from welcoming.
As the menu is already set, Ho-yeong lets Seong-jae work in a small corner of the kitchen without disturbing the staff. Seong-jae feels out of place but soon captures the attention of the professional cooks as his knife skills exhibit a precision that surprises them.
He also notes the good quality of the ingredients used in the Officers’ Mess. Here every thing is fresh and top-grade, the supplies at Ganglim Outpost are not like this.
Ganglim Outpost Trouble –
Back at Ganglim, Dong-hyun is in a nightmarish situation.
Without Seong-jae in the kitchen, he will have to make one of the meals the soldiers like the least, which is braised boneless pollack. He’s loaned Kwan-cheol to help him but neither man feels good about the job.
As lunch time comes the soldiers come into the dining hall expecting disappointment. Seeing Dong-hyun serve food instead of Seong-jae instantly kills their spirits.
Some even think of running away before the meal starts.
But after the first bite, everyone else’s expectations are blown away. The dish is tasty, surprisingly. The success is attributed to a detailed recipe note prepared by Seong-jae before he went to the Officers’ Mess.
And this moment is proof that Seong-jae’s influence reaches far beyond his own cuisine.
Chun-ik Intimidates Ye-rin
While the food is being prepared, officers shoot the breeze during the promotion celebration.
Then Chun-ik calls out Ye-rin and things get awkward. She’s the only woman there, so she’s already feeling isolated, and Chun-ik takes the opportunity to attack her character under the guise of friendly conversation.
Clearly, his comments are meant as a warning. He suggests that while determination can be useful, people should know their place and not be too stubborn.
The exchange mirrors the heightened political tension surrounding Ye-rin and her investigation.
The Quest for a Five Star Meal
Seong-jae struggles with his recipe of japchae in the kitchen.
No matter how hard he tries to follow the instructions the dish never gets over four stars He’s tried again and again, and he doesn’t even know what’s missing.
When he asks for advice, the veteran chef Ho-yeong tells him to keep experimenting and not to quit.
Eventually the Chef’s Path system provides a clue. The meal only needs one special ingredient to be great.
Seong-jae looks around the kitchen and finds wild pine mushrooms. He adds them to the dish with more tips from Ho-yeong on how to prepare them correctly and finally makes a five-star Wild Pine Mushroom Japchae.
Winning commander Won-young
The japchae is ready and served at the end.
First, Commander Won-young doesn’t seem to be impressed by what looks like a simple noodle dish. But no sooner has he tasted it than his manner changes.
The taste was better than we expected.
The chat continues, and Seong-jae inadvertently reveals an important point: the Officers’ Mess uses far superior ingredients than the regular soldiers are provided with.
Ye-rin has his back and while Seok-ho tries to steer the conversation away, the damage is done.
Won-young immediately orders Chun-ik and Min-gu to look into the situation and submit a report.
Perhaps Seong-jae had been unaware he was exposing a far greater issue than he bargained for.
Ho-yeong sees Seong-jae’s talent
Seong-jae completes the 5-star dish and receives generous rewards from the Chef’s Path system, such as new dessert recipes and advanced cooking techniques.
Most importantly, he wins Ho-yeong’s respect.
The veteran chef himself tries a bite of Seong-jae’s dish, to the shock of the rest of the kitchen staff. The other cooks said that Ho-yeong seldom tastes the food made by others.
Some chefs are dismissive of Seong-jae’s achievement, but Ho-yeong reminds them that technique alone won’t do. “Their biggest weakness is complacency,” he says, “but Seong-jae keeps working to get better and better.”
The moment is an important step in the chef growth of Seong-jae.
The Start of the Inquiry
Finally, the corruption storyline gets moving at the end of the episode.
Won-young orders Chun-ik’s inspection to be thorough, and Min-gu tells Chun-ik to be thorough. His words are vague, but the implication is clear: the investigation is targeting Ganglim Outpost first.
The last scenes show Min-gu and his inspection team unexpectedly arriving at the outpost, foreshadowing significant events in the following episodes.
Episode 9 Review
Episode 9 still excels at balancing humor, character development, and food-centric storytelling. Seong-jae’s quest to create his first five-star dish is a compelling challenge and his developing relationship with Ho-yeong adds another dimension to his culinary journey.
The episode continues to add to the ongoing mystery of military corruption. But with only a handful of episodes remaining, there’s a real fear the storyline might not have enough time to wrap up in a fully satisfying way. If the series wants to deliver a strong payoff, it’ll have to move fast.
That said, the performances remain a strong point. Park Ji-hoon again carries much of the emotional and comedic beats, and the supporting cast continues to have good chemistry.
Overall, Episode 9 is another fun chapter that moves Seong-jae’s growth forward while finally bringing the bigger conflict to the center stage. Ganglim Outpost’s surprise inspection indicates the final leg of the series might be the most dramatic yet.
