The first season of Alice and Steve ends dramatically with an episode full of misunderstandings, emotional confrontations and a life-threatening disaster. A wedding celebration turns into a total disaster as deep seated emotions erupt and several relationships are brought to the edge.# A Strange Start
The finale opens with Alice waking from a strange dream, then boarding a bus for an outdoor venue in the countryside where Steve and Izzy are planning to tie the knot. Friends and family get ready for the big day and the atmosphere is already charged with tension.
Dom arrives with Rome as his plus-one and Daniel arrives with his co-worker Marni. One of the reasons Daniel chooses to do this is because he is frustrated that Alice is so close to Steve. The sight of Daniel and Marni together puts Alice’s suspicions right up and she becomes convinced that there’s some romantic stuff going on between them.
Alice feels increasingly overwhelmed and tells Rome she feels like her life is running away from her.# Signs of Wedding Doubts Start to Emerge
The group arrives at the manor and takes part in a shooting activity that quickly leads to further tension. Steve is horrified to see Alice with a gun and thinks she is trying to sabotage the wedding. His worries sound absurd to everyone else, but they show how unsettled he has become.
This results in another argument between Steve and Izzy. With the wedding day approaching, Izzy begins to question if this is the right thing for her. The pressure and the stress of her pregnancy becomes too much and she has a panic attack.
Steve tries to reassure her. “We have plenty of time to build a future together. Izzy is still not convinced, despite his efforts. In a key scene, she texts Janis, the father of her unborn child, to tell him about the wedding that is about to take place.## Rehearsal Dinner Turns into Chaos
The rehearsal dinner is shaping up to be one of the most uncomfortable events of the season.
Steve tries to give a touching speech, but Alice ruins the moment by cracking an awkward joke about how Izzy almost could have been Steve’s daughter, given his previous history with her. The comment instantly strains the atmosphere around the table.
Things get further complicated in the evening with an unexpected arrival from Janis. Daniel intervenes and delivers his own speech, referring to himself as Izzy’s stepfather and stating his support for her.
But all hope of a salvageable night are lost when Alice begins to turn on Izzy about the massive age gap between her and Steve. Izzy fires back, pointing out that Alice herself married a younger man. The argument escalates further when Alice publicly accuses Daniel of having an affair with Marni leaving everyone stunned.# Relationships Reach a Crossroads
As night falls several plots converge.
Dom and Rome finally take their relationship to the next level. Elsewhere, Steve receives unwanted advice from his dad Barry, whose comments about marriage and commitment make him face uncomfortable truths about his relationship with Izzy.
Meanwhile, Janis secretly meets with Izzy and admits he still has feelings for her. He begs her not to wed. Izzy dismisses his claims at first, but the conversation brings up some old feelings between them. Eventually, the two kiss, and things get messier in an already complicated situation.
“Meanwhile Daniel confesses to Marni that despite all the upheaval he still loves Alice.## Fire changes everything
The biggest shock of the episode comes when a fire suddenly breaks out at the manor.
The fire starts in Dom and Rome’s room and quickly spreads through the old building. The guests run for the exits in panic.
When Alice hears about the emergency, she immediately starts looking for Izzy. When she finds her daughter safe she realizes that Steve is still trapped inside the burning manor. Alice, without hesitation, rushes into the building.
Inside, Steve is convinced that Alice wants to stop the wedding at any cost. But as the fire closes in around them, he finally realises she’s putting her life on the line to save his.
The pair manage to get out of the room, but find that the fire has spread and all the exits are blocked. The only thing they can do is get on the roof.## What the Finale’s Cliffhanger Ending Means
As Alice and Steve are stranded above the inferno, Daniel reenters the building to rescue Alice.
In what may be their last moments, Alice and Steve have an unusually honest conversation. Both admit their mistakes and promise to change if they survive.
Alice promises to be less self-absorbed, and more aware of those around her. Steve quips he’ll never date or chase anyone under 35 again.
Realizing that there is no safe way out, the two hold hands and get ready to jump from the roof as the season ends.
The decision to end on a cliffhanger leaves their fate up in the air and sets up the potential for a second season. ## Recension
The last episode is a perfect reflection of the unhinged energy of the show. Relationships blow up, secrets are revealed, and a wedding weekend turns into a full-blown disaster.
Alice and Steve* is a weird premise, but the series works because it never reduces its characters to caricatures. But underneath the comedy is a story about insecurity, emotional immaturity and people making rash decisions in their search for happiness.
One of the best things about the finale is Steve’s gradual realization that his relationship with Izzy may have been more of a rebellion than true love. All season he’s measured himself against Alice time and again and the wedding seems more and more like another front in that battle.
Izzy also experiences some meaningful growth. But by the finale, she learns that marrying someone she barely knows is not the answer to her problems. Another example of her uncertainty about her future is her continued attachment to Janis.
Yes, the season does feel a bit rushed at times, but the finale has enough drama, laughs and emotional punch to keep you hooked. The open ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered and makes a strong case for a second season.## Judgment
Alice and Steve ends Season 1 with a perfect blend of comedy, relationship drama and suspense. The cliffhanger ending definitely raises the stakes, and leaves viewers eager to see what happens if the show does come back for another season.
