Episode 3 of Fifties Professionals is another roller coaster of betrayals, hidden agendas and secrets buried for decades. The stakes are raised considerably as old rivalries resurface and powerful criminal organizations begin to reveal their hands in the fight for Yeongseon Island.# Beom-Ryung Makes Another Step Forward
It starts with a flashback to when Beom-Ryung saved Gong-Bok during a violent altercation years ago. The flashback parallels the present-day scenario where Beom-Ryung again puts himself in jeopardy to guard his longtime friend.
Following the brutal warehouse fight, Gong-bok ends up in the hands of In-goo and his men. The gang leader humiliates both Gong-bok and Beom-Ryung into degrading acts and then abandons them on the roadside. Je-sun and Nam-il are treated the same, told to leave their house within three days.
The scene also highlights the present power that In-goo possesses and emphasizes the loyalty between Beom-Ryung and Gong-bok.# Gong-Bok Is Riddled With Guilt
Back at the convenience store, Gong-bok apologizes for pulling Beom-Ryung into his personal war. He says he is ready to give up his revenge plans and admits Ho-Myeong may not be after all responsible for the downfall of the Capital organisation.
Their outpouring of heartfelt words is interrupted by the police officer that Beom-Ryung likes, who comes to check on him. Her concern clearly moves him, which is one of the lighter moments of the episode amid the chaos.
But Gong-bok’s apparent decision to move on doesn’t last. He is quietly still determined to finish what he started.# Ho-Myeong Starts to Connect the Dots
Ho-Myeong, meanwhile, continues his investigation of the mysterious parcel and the figure known as Bulgae. His search soon leads him back to Gong-bok whom he thinks may have the key to the answers.
Meanwhile, Young-ae has a frightening surprise in store for her when she returns home to find her house vandalized. Clearly someone is trying to intimidate her – and stop her investigating – and they have left behind this threatening message.
Visiting Mr. Hwang in prison only makes her more determined. She’s looking for answers because she wants to solve a murder case that has been unsolved for decades. Eventually Hwang hints that the real killer is someone he once trusted deeply, another major mystery for the series.# Chairman Do Enters the Fray
Elsewhere Chairman Do arrives at the casino and immediately draws attention. His tense meeting with In-goo illustrates the rising friction between the two men.
Chairman Do also finds out about suspicious drug operations linked to In-goo’s business activities. He chooses to dig deeper instead of confronting the issue directly, implying bigger plans already brewing behind the scenes.
Chairman Do’s arrival adds another heavyweight to an already crowded power struggle. ## International Crime Syndicates in the Conflict
One of the biggest surprises of the episode is a high-level meeting between Japanese and Chinese criminal figures with Han.
The topic of discussion is the delayed buying of land on Yeongseon Island. Han tries to reassure his partners that his political ambitions will help accelerate things, but there are doubts as to whether he can deliver.
The meeting confirmed the struggle for the island is much more than just local corruption. Now that international criminal interests are involved directly, this is far more dangerous than we had imagined.# Gong-Bok Finally Spills All
Gong-bok finally tells the truth after being captured by Ho-Myeong.
He recalls the catastrophic fallout that the Hwasan faction experienced after the ferry disaster a decade ago. Gong-bok said he and Beom-Ryung had spent years searching for a lost parcel that could clear their former leader’s name and reveal the actual offenders.
This revelation provides a much clearer picture of what motivates several key characters. It also shows the important role of Han and In-goo in the destruction of the Hwasan faction.
Ho-Myeong is skeptical but agrees to use Gong-bok as an informant. Their uneasy alliance is one of the episode’s most important developments.## Ho Myeong’s Target In-Goo
The investigation goes on and Ho-Myeong begins to observe Je-sun and In-goo.
His suspicions intensify when he finds links between In-goo’s business and drug trafficking. Ho-Myeong suspects something bigger is at play and decides to confront him head-on.
The episode ends on a brutal bathroom confrontation. Ho-Myeong, wearing a mask, corners In-goo and demands answers about the aggressive property acquisitions happening around Yeongseon Island.
In-goo refuses to talk, no matter how badly he is beaten. His men eventually arrive and surround Ho-Myeong, trapping the investigator as the episode cuts to black.#Episode Recap
Episode 3 of Fifties Professionals takes a big turn. The mystery of the characters’ identities has almost entirely been removed, which allows for the story to start gaining speed.
The revelation that international criminal organizations are backing Han’s land-development scheme greatly widens the scope of the story. What began as a neighborhood beef is now blowing up into a huge conspiracy of political corruption, organized crime and secrets buried for decades.
The series sometimes has too many balls in the air, but the momentum keeps building. The episode answers some important questions while setting up even bigger ones for the weeks ahead.
The next episode raises the stakes even further with Ho-Myeong trapped, Gong-bok as an informant and powerful criminal groups moving in the shadows.
