Half Man’s first episode starts with Niall Kennedy’s wedding, where an unexpected and violent fight sets the tone for the rest of the show. Niall and his brother Ruben Pallister get into a fight in a barn, which shows that there is a lot of tension between them. What should be a happy time turns bad when Ruben attacks Niall, forcing both characters and viewers to relive painful memories from their past.
The story goes back in time to when they were teenagers. Gus and two other students make fun of Niall at school and call him homophobic names. Gus steals Niall’s Indiana Jones collectible cards and makes fun of him in front of the whole class, which makes things worse. Mr. Jenkins, the teacher, steps in to try to calm things down and later says that Ruben is being moved from the Polmont Young Offenders Institute to the school.
As soon as Niall hears Ruben’s name, he is scared, which shows that he is still emotionally hurt by his brother. His mother Lori says that Ruben will be moving in with them and even sharing Niall’s room. Lori tries to make it sound like a chance for the family to get back together, but Niall has a hard time accepting it, especially since Maura—Ruben’s mother—has already been staying with them longer than planned.
Ruben is the first to arrive and starts to settle in, which suggests that the brothers have a complicated past. Their relationship seems distant but familiar, and it is shaped by unresolved conflict. Things get worse at school when Ruben doesn’t show up, and Niall is the victim of a cruel prank that involves a creepy drawing being put in his notebook. The event causes chaos in the classroom, punishment, and more attention from Mr. Jenkins, who starts to wonder how stable Niall’s home life is.
In the meantime, things in the family become more and more unstable. Maura’s presence in the house causes emotional problems, and Ruben’s estranged and drunk father shows up for a short time, making things worse with his aggressive behavior and rude comments. Even though things are crazy, Ruben and Niall still seem to be drawn to each other, often through fear and emotional need.
As the episode goes on, Ruben has a bad effect on Niall. He threatens Gus at school, and Gus comes back with visible injuries, which suggests that Ruben has hurt him off-screen. Ruben’s erratic behavior gets even worse when he refuses to take his prelims and then gives up on the test completely. Even so, Niall quietly finishes part of the paper, showing that he is torn between fear and duty.
The episode shows a rare moment of vulnerability in a more personal way. Ruben and Niall talk about their father, who has passed away. He used to work in a bar and wanted to be a writer. This connection makes Niall want to write in his diary, which shows that he wants to express himself and get away from his surroundings.
The episode ends with the brothers having more and more upsetting and unclear moments. Ruben’s control over Niall goes back and forth between being aggressive and protective, and it all comes to a head in a final fight that is just like the ones they had before. The line between loyalty, trauma, and control stays blurry as Ruben physically overpowers Niall again, leaving the episode on an unsettling note.
