Margo’s Got Money Troubles – Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Review

In the first episode of Margo’s Got Money Problems, Margo writes in her journal about her life and wonders if she will make the same mistakes her parents did.
Mark, her literature teacher, asks her to stay after class and accuses her of possibly plagiarizing. Margo strongly denies the claim. Mark then changes his tone and compliments her talent, saying she should go to Harvard. This makes the line between student and teacher less clear and uncomfortable.
Later, Margo video calls her friend Becca, who quickly sees that Mark is acting inappropriately. Becca tells her not to get involved because he is married and clearly flirting. Even though this happens, Margo starts dating Mark, and they sleep together several times over the next few weeks. He even writes her a poem called “Hungry Ghost.” Margo still doesn’t care about Becca’s worries.
Shayanne, Margo’s mother, is disappointed when her religious boyfriend Kenny doesn’t ask her to marry him and instead gives her a cross necklace. Shayanne doesn’t like the situation when Margo tells her about Mark with excitement. She thinks she knows the truth right away.
Margo often calls Becca on video to keep her up to date on the affair. One of her roommates, Susie, is also a fan of wrestling, especially a wrestler named Jinx.
Margo starts to feel sick while she is working as a waitress. Because of her symptoms, her boss tells her to take a pregnancy test. The test comes back positive, and after checking it several times, Margo talks to Mark. He puts pressure on her in a subtle way to have an abortion. But after talking to her doctor, Margo decides to keep the baby.
Shayanne tells her about the realities of being a single mother and how disappointed she is, and she is worried about how to tell Kenny what is going on. Margo, on the other hand, is determined and even thinks about telling her father, who she hasn’t seen in a long time. Shayanne talks about her own past, saying that she became a single mother after a one-night stand with Jinx, who she later found out was married.
Margo’s roommates give her mixed support. Even though some people don’t agree with her choice, they still throw her a small baby shower. Shayanne tries to act happy about becoming a grandmother, but you can still tell that she’s worried.
Margo gets ready to be a mom as the months go by. They run into Mark and his wife and kids while shopping with Shayanne. Things get tense between them. Mark says that Margo is stalking him and that he tried to get her to not have the baby. He even wonders if the child is his. Margo, upset by what he said, says she doesn’t want anything from him.
This fight makes things worse between Margo and her mother. Shayanne thinks the pregnancy is a terrible mistake that will change Margo’s life forever. She asks for space to deal with her feelings because she is too much.
The episode ends with Margo giving birth in the hospital while Shayanne deals with her anxiety and fear.

The premiere takes a short approach, covering a long time from the start of Margo’s affair to the birth of her child. This doesn’t let us go into more detail about some moments, but it does set up the main conflict and emotional stakes.
It seems like Margo’s choice to keep the baby is based on both defiance and conviction. Almost everyone around her thinks she’s making the wrong choice and that abortion is the only way to save her future. Shayanne, in particular, sees the pregnancy as the end of Margo’s potential, not a new beginning.
The power dynamic between Margo and Mark is one of the most interesting parts. His actions show that he is trying to control and manipulate her, especially when he tries to change her mind. Margo’s decision to keep the baby, on the other hand, is an act of taking back her freedom, even though she is unsure and faces criticism.
In general, the episode sets up a character-driven story about independence, consequences, and the hard step into adulthood.
