In Episode 4 of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, we get to know Paula’s complicated history even better, and the stakes are raised in the present-day murder investigation. The episode slowly reveals the secrets Paula has been hiding through a combination of tense flashbacks and increasing pressure from law enforcement, slowly revealing they are far more dangerous than anyone originally suspected.# A Troubled Memory of Portland
The episode starts two years earlier in Portland, Paula, Karl and their daughter Hazel are trying to get to a birthday party at Karl’s boss Bryce’s house. But just before they leave, a mysterious man named Caleb unexpectedly blocks their car, adding to the general unease of the flashback.
The family arrive for the celebration with a last-minute gift in tow. To survive the awkward social event they agree to a code word “raisins” anyone can use when they want to leave early. During the party, Paula observes Karl getting along with his coworker Mallory, something that clearly makes her uncomfortable.
When Hazel gets tired, Paula takes her home by herself. But what starts as a routine drive soon becomes a life-changing event.# Everything Changes After Caleb’s Death
Back at the party, Karl receives a frantic call from Paula, who says she has been in a serious accident. Paula is visibly shaken when Mallory drives him home, trying to take in what has happened.
Paula shows Caleb’s dead body outside the house. In her version of events, he had come out of the darkness and she had no choice but to run him over with her car. When Paula confronts the situation, Mallory immediately jumps in to help her out. She even encourages Paula to drink wine, so that if they find alcohol in her system, the investigators will have an explanation.
The flashback sets up a major mystery that will loom over Paula years later.# Detectives Start to Put the Pieces Together
In the present day, Paula tells Detective Gonzales and Detective Jim Baxter about Caleb’s death. She says the incident was a terrible accident, but she’s not convincing the detectives.
Gonzales suspects that Paula is hiding something important, and openly questions whether Caleb’s death may be somehow connected to Trevor’s murder. The interview places Paula in greater scrutiny as investigators continue to search for inconsistencies in her story.# Strengthens Defense
Elsewhere, an anonymous source pretending to be tech support feeds Dennis information about both Paula and Mallory. Soon after, he sits down with detectives to be questioned.
Dennis describes himself as a grieving person, and says he was in physical therapy at the Elmhurst Healing Centre when Trevor was killed. His performance is convincing enough to convince Detective Baxter, who begins to think the alibi might be real.
But the truth is soon revealed to the audience.
Security camera footage shows Dennis arriving at the facility as he claimed, but then he sneaks out through a window after checking into a sensory deprivation room. Once outside he drives away with Paula’s home address in hand, revealing the elaborately staged lie behind his alibi.# Mallory’s Breaking Point
Mallory finally comes to in the hospital, after the attack she suffered earlier in the season. She is seriously injured and one side of her face is badly bruised.
The experience seems to have turned her around completely. She tells Karl she no longer wants to wait until the end of the school year to leave town. Instead, she wants to run away right now. That means she no longer feels safe to stay where she is.# Paula’s friends know the truth
At work Paula meets Geri and Rudy who confess they know about Trevor. They find out by snooping around on Paula’s laptop, a violation that instantly creates tension between the friends.
She felt more and more alone, more and more trapped, and at last she felt she could not hide everything any longer. Later she meets up with them and tells them the whole story hoping they can help her get to the truth.
Geri’s examination of footage of Trevor’s assault takes their investigation in an unexpected direction. She recognizes the attacker’s distinctive ring and later sees the same jewelry in photos on social media posted by Trevor and his friends.
The clue hinted that the attacker may have been someone within Trevor’s inner circle. One of Trevor’s associates is identified by Paula, offering the three a promising lead to follow up on.## The Threat Draws Near
Paula tries to take control of the situation as Detective Baxter calls with some disturbing news. Investigators now consider her a possible suspect in Trevor’s death.
At the same time, Karl learns that Paula is in serious legal trouble, which strains their relationship even more.
The last moments of the episode are particularly disturbing. Paula goes home for a shower, not knowing that Dennis is driving directly to her house. The impending confrontation is a good cliffhanger and establishes serious danger for the next chapter.# Review of Episode
Episode 4 expands the larger story while balancing mystery and suspense with character development. Those Portland flashbacks give us some important context about Paula and Karl’s past, revealing clues of a secret that clearly has been a part of their lives for years.
Tatiana Maslany continues to do a great job of playing Paula’s increasing desperation in the two timelines. Her ability to flip between guilt, fear and determination is one of the series’ greatest strengths.
While the present day plot does move a little slow, the episode more than makes up for it with snappy pacing, quick scene changes and a growing sense of paranoia. The revelation of Dennis’s fake alibi adds another layer of tension and the mystery surrounding Caleb poses some interesting questions that are yet to be answered.
The biggest challenge moving forward is going to be how to tie the Portland story line into the present day murder investigation in a satisfying way. But for now, the unanswered questions just make the series more compelling.
