The power struggle between Mun-do and Dal-su is taken up a notch throughout the episode.
Mun-do learns that Dal-su may have been pretending to have memory loss and realizes he is being manipulated. Tensions boil over when Driver Seo abducts Seo-jun on Dal-su’s orders.
The result is a confrontation that shows how deep the brokenness of the family relationships is.
Mun-do calls his uncle a hypocrite and speaks of the cruelty of using a child as a bargaining chip. While Mun-do has done some pretty terrible things throughout the series, his desire to protect his son makes him surprisingly sympathetic in this moment.
It’s one of the few times the show allows viewers to see the human side of its main villain.# Grandma Nam’s Last Promise
Grandma Nam’s story arc is the most heartbreaking of the episode.
Her condition deteriorates rapidly and she is taken to the hospital urgently. Seo-ri finds it difficult to accept what is happening. Se-gye recalls a moment of clarity when Nam had asked him to stay by Seo-ri’s side and keep her from being lonely.
Later that night Nam feels her journey is coming to an end.
She talks about her dream to be a bus driver and go wherever she wants. There is a beautifully emotional scene where Seo-ri dreams of Nam taking her and her friends for one last trip to the beach.
Soon the fantasy turns into reality.
Nam tries to hold Seo-ri’s hand, reassuring her that she had a good life and died peacefully.
It’s one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the series, and a reminder of how important Nam has been to everyone around her.#Se-gye’s Life is Hanging by a Thread
Just when you think the emotional damage can’t get any worse, the episode delivers its biggest shocker.
After listening to the museum guide speak of Prince Cheongheon’s legendary love letter and his longing to meet his beloved in another lifetime, Seo-ri starts to ponder about fate and destiny.
As the mysterious comet approaches its last appearance, the timing becomes even more significant.
Then comes the disaster.
Se-gye is suddenly attacked by an assailant while buying food for Seo-ri. The attack is sudden and becomes one of the most harrowing moments of the season.
Seo-ri, terrified, takes him to the hospital where she receives a chilling message from the Fortune Teller Geum who is again under the spell of the Joseon shaman.
Prophecy says, Seo-ri’s loved ones die.
The only way to lift the curse is to go back to Joseon and save Prince Cheongheon.
The price, though, is enormous. Once Seo-ri returns, she will never be able to go back to the modern world.
Seo-ri faces the prospect of losing Se-gye forever and makes a heartbreaking decision.
She is prepared to give up everything.# Concluding Remarks
The warmth and tragedy of Episode 13 are perfectly balanced. Seo-ri and Se-gye’s playful rooftop date is home to some of the season’s sweetest romantic moments, and Grandma Nam’s farewell lands a powerful emotional punch.
The episode also does a good job of getting Mun-do closer to the edge of the abyss without making him a two-dimensional villain. His love for Seo-jun adds shades to a character who has been making ruthless choices all season long.
And the stakes are dramatically raised in the final act, most importantly. The stabbing of Se-gye and the revelation about Seo-ri’s curse sets the stage for a finale of impossible choices.
With only one episode left, My Royal Nemesis is getting ready for an emotional conclusion that could either bring its star-crossed lovers back together or tear them apart for good.
