Netflix’s Office Romance stars Jackie Cruz as the ambitious CEO of AirCruz Airlines. Jackie, the daughter of the company’s founder, is an accomplished pilot in her own right and has spent years proving that she deserves her leadership position. Smart, motivated and very selective about who she allows into her life, she seems to be all about her career.
That is, until she falls for Daniel Blanchflower, a talented lawyer working for AirCruz’s legal department. While the attraction is instant, company policy on workplace relationships makes acting on their feelings a serious professional gamble. Initially hesitant, they soon begin a clandestine affair that endangers both their careers and the future of the airline.## The Threat to Jackie & Daniel’s Relationship Grows
Jackie is managing a complicated personal life, while navigating AirCruz through a major legal battle with another airline over access to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The case becomes one of the top priorities of the company.
On the other side, in the middle of the fight, they hire a private eye to find out information that might hurt AirCruz. Soon Jackie and Daniel’s secret love affair is revealed.
The disclosure has grave implications. Jackie may lose control of the company she has worked so hard to lead, and Daniel’s professional future is equally uncertain. He’s a British citizen employed by the US government, so if this scandal becomes public, he’s probably screwed.
The pressure makes the couple face the reality of their situation. As they have hard conversations about the fall out, Jackie starts to feel that Daniel is too logical and emotionally detached in his approach to their relationship. They have differing views and it leads to a painful breakup in the end.# Does Jackie Resign as CEO?
After the breakup, Jackie begins to question whether quitting her job is the best way to keep AirCruz from further controversy.
She talks to some trusted colleagues before having a frank discussion with her father. This is one of the more meaningful scenes of the film as Jackie finally gets to speak to years of frustration at being underestimated and publicly criticized by him in front of the company’s board members.
Meanwhile, Daniel decides to resign from AirCruz himself to avoid the appearance of impropriety. He gets a job at another law firm thinking he is doing the right thing.
But the separation gives Daniel time to think over his choices. He realizes he may have made a mistake in walking away from both Jackie and the company and that he doesn’t want her career to be sacrificed on account of their relationship.# When an Office Romance Goes Bad.
The climax of the film occurs at a press conference where Jackie is about to announce her resignation as CEO.
Daniel shows up and confesses their relationship in public before she can make the announcement. Together they decide to be honest about their romance rather than continue hiding it.
The couple insists that their personal relationship never interfered with company operations or employee welfare. Transparency shifts the narrative and helps alleviate the pressure surrounding the controversy.
In the aftermath, Jackie reverses AirCruz’s hard-line anti-fraternization policy. The decision leads to a comedic series of employees coming forward to reveal their own workplace relationships.
In the end, Jackie and Daniel are back together stronger than ever and looking toward the future with each other.## Will We See A Sequel To Office Romance?
Netflix has not announced any plans for a sequel yet.
The ending ties up most of the big storylines and doesn’t leave much room for a direct continuation. Jackie and Daniel make up, get past the main obstacle between them, and seem to be on their way to a long-term commitment.
One plot thread that remains unresolved is the sister of Daniel who is still in prison on murder charges. The film tells only a small part of her story and leaves a lot of questions unanswered. If there was a sequel to be made, her story would probably be the best starting point for a story.# Why The Ending Is Unfulfilling
Office Romance wants to be a steamy workplace romance, but the movie doesn’t quite build the emotional rapport between its leads.
There is clearly a strong physical chemistry between Jackie and Daniel, but the relationship often lacks the emotional depth necessary to make viewers fully invested in their journey. As a result, the film’s biggest dramatic moments don’t carry the weight they should.
The ending also resolves it’s central conflict surprisingly fast. Many viewers may find the resolution unrealistic considering the legal, corporate and public-relations implications of the CEO’s clandestine relationship with an employee.
The film does not look at the long-term impact of the scandal but chooses a simple and optimistic conclusion in which most of the problems disappear almost immediately after the truth is revealed.
In the end, Office Romance delivers a message about the pursuit of love and personal happiness. But by avoiding many of the real problems such a relationship would present, the film’s ending feels too neat and less emotionally satisfying than it could have been.
