Power Book III: Raising Kanan has officially kicked off its final chapter, and the series wastes no time in reminding viewers that there’s no happy ending in store for the Thomas family. As the prequel nears the end, the story takes on darker territory than ever before, providing a premiere filled with heartbreak, betrayal and consequences.
The end point of Kanan Stark’s journey has been known to audiences for years. But watching the evolution happen blow by blow is one of the more rewarding things to see about the series. The atmosphere in Season 5 is very chilling at the beginning, and it shows how broken the family is. Trust is gone, loyalties are being tested and it looks like everybody is on a collision course.
The fallout from the explosive Season 4 finale colors every scene. Raquel ‘Raq’ Thomas has survived the immediate danger but the mother-son relationship is apparently beyond repair. Suspicion, resentment and a growing desire for control has replaced the emotional bond that once existed between them.
MeKai Curtis continues to kill it as Kanan giving us a glimpse of the slow transformation into the cold-blooded character we all met in the original Power series. Kanan is no longer content to follow the rules laid down by those around him. He’s starting to forge his own path, no matter who gets hurt along the way.
The premiere also provides a jaw dropping tragedy early in the episode that shifts the trajectory of the season right away. Rather than ratcheting up the tension slowly, the writers decide to come out swinging from the very first moments, establishing the tone for what appears to be a relentlessly intense final season.
The long-awaited arrival of Breeze is one of the biggest talking points surrounding Season 5. The character has been almost legendary in the Power universe for years, and expectations for his debut were understandably high.
Shameik Moore plays the part with confidence, delivering a calm but disturbing on-screen performance. Moore does not make Breeze a cliched crime boss, ruling through fear; he’s a man with a quiet confidence that makes him all the more dangerous. His scenes have an unpredictable quality that keeps viewers always on the edge of their seats.
The chemistry between Moore and Curtis is what makes the character especially effective. Every time Breeze and Kanan have a conversation, it feels like that conversation is quietly impacting the future of the franchise. One of the strongest elements of the season is their chemistry.
One of the key characteristics I wanted the audience to identify with Breeze was his smile,” said Moore. That little detail ends up being surprisingly important throughout the premiere, helping to separate the character from other figures in the criminal underworld. Underneath the charm is a sense of danger that makes Breeze immediately fascinating.
Elsewhere, the other Thomas family continues to struggle under mounting pressure. Marvin fights his own demons, Lou-Lou is stuck in his own downward spiral and Jukebox is under increasing scrutiny from the law. Every story line contributes to the mounting sense that the family’s foundation is finally beginning to crack.
And the Thomas family isn’t the only one getting ready to profit from the chaos. Pop and Snaps are still some of the most strategic people in South Jamaica and Season 5 hints at their power growing as other families grow weaker. Now with Breeze in the picture the balance of power could shift dramatically, alliances could change drastically.
The premiere works because it doesn’t sugarcoat the harsh realities its characters face. Instead, it adopts a grim and relentless tone that is perfectly suited to the story’s inescapable destination. The writing, performances and cinematography all work together to create an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.
At the end of the day, the Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5 premiere delivers fans exactly what they wanted from the final season. It’s intense, emotional, full of developments that will have big consequences for the rest of the episodes. Most importantly, it feels like a story that is confidently heading to its conclusion without losing the things that made the series work in the first place.
If the first episode is anything to go by, the road ahead will be brutal. Kanan and Raq find themselves on opposite sides of an increasingly dangerous conflict, and now Breeze is pulling the strings from the shadows. The battle for South Jamaica has only just begun. ### Decision
The Season 5 premiere is a hell of a first act that raises the stakes immediately and sets the stage for an unforgettable conclusion. Strong performances, shocking twists and the highly anticipated debut of Breeze make this one of the most impactful season premieres in the history of the Power franchise.”
