Star City Season 3 Episode 3 Review Star City Season 3 Episode 3 Recap Star City Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Star City Season 3 Episode 3 Recap The episode takes its time to establish key developments, but the final reveal changes the direction of the series dramatically.## A Secret Record and Mounting Tensions
The episode starts in 1970, where Tanya gets a vinyl record on the black market. The music finally gets to Irina, who listens to it at home, trying to do her work. Valya arrives, interrupting her concentration, and accuses her of not following the rules. Their argument quickly becomes heated, showing the increasing pressure within the Soviet system.
Meanwhile, an ambitious lunar mission is on the drawing board. The engineers work around the clock to get the spacecraft ready, and Valya is furious with the cosmonauts Sasha and Arseni Vetrov for joking during a serious procedure. One mistake could cost lives, he reminds them.
(Sasha is understandably upset, and Valya does apologize to her later.) It’s obvious that everyone’s under enormous stress with the launch date looming.## The Chief Designer Is Dreaming New Dreams
The moon project is still attracting attention, but the chief designer is already looking ahead to an even more ambitious goal: Venus.
He discovers a bathysphere that could withstand the planet’s overwhelming atmospheric conditions. Getting the equipment overland isn’t easy, especially when Lyudmilla stops them at a checkpoint for a full inspection. The Chief Designer dodges trouble by claiming the enormous device is merely a fuel tank.
Later Sergei talks about recruiting a cosmonaut for the future Venus mission. Anastasia appears to be a potential option, particularly as she appears to be ready to take risks that others might shy away from.## Personal Relationships in Trouble
Valya returns home and tries to make it up to Tanya after a difficult day. An awkward health scare briefly interrupts their romantic evening, giving the episode one of its lighter moments.
Elsewhere, Anastasia’s concern about the Moon mission is growing. She questions the dangers involved, especially because of their equipment limitations. Mission officials ask Sasha and Arseni to write goodbye letters to loved ones in case they don’t return, confirming her fears.
Sasha writes Tanya. The tension is high.# Irina’s Moral Dilemma
The episode also advances Irina’s plot line. Tanya runs into Irina at a local market and learns that Irina’s daughter, Zoya, is a music teacher at Tanya’s school.
The disclosure creates an uncomfortable intersection between Irina’s career responsibilities and her private life. Things get more complicated when Irina is invited into Tanya’s house.
Irina starts to feel guilty, knowing that she has recordings of some of Tanya’s most intimate moments. Eventually she takes a risk and edits parts of the recordings, especially parts that mention her father.
That could come back to haunt them later on in the season.# An Out-Of-Space Emergency
As the spacecraft approaches the Moon, mission control picks up a strange high frequency signal. Chief Designer Sergei and Lyudmilla suspect that American intelligence may be trying to analyze or interfere with Soviet technology.
Lyudmilla orders them to shut down the suspected intrusion. But the move requires a full system reboot, something many consider to be extremely dangerous.
Lyudmilla disregards the objections, and orders the reboot.
The choice proves to be a disaster.
The critical systems start to go haywire during the lunar descent. The habitat module deploys prematurely, the thrusters act erratically and the crew loses control of vital functions. The astronauts have to jettison part of the spacecraft to survive.
If the automated systems fail completely, the only recourse is to intervene manually. During the crisis, Sasha steps up and, after a few tense moments, the crew manages to avoid total catastrophe.
Unfortunately, the mission comes at a terrible price. Arseni dies when the damaged craft breaks apart during the emergency.# The Shocking Conclusion
Just as the episode appears to be wrapping up, Star City throws us its biggest curveball.
Valya is seen on a night out with Tanya and an American woman. At first Tanya thinks that he is having an affair, but the truth is much more dangerous.
Valya is the mole.
The man who has overseen the entire episode, demanding discipline and perfection from the crew, is secretly sabotaging the spacecraft.
It’s a twist that instantly redefines everything viewers thought they knew about his character.#Review of Episode
Episode 3 may not be as fast-paced as previous episodes, but the patience pays off with some major developments and one of the season’s best twists so far.
The Moon mission is very suspenseful, particularly when the onboard systems start to fail. Arseni’s death carries real emotional weight, and serves as a reminder to the audience that space travel in this world can have deadly consequences.
We also are drawn into Irina’s growing internal conflict. Her decision to tamper with sensitive recordings seems to me like the beginning of a story arc that could really cause problems in the future.
Anastasia is still a bit underused but the episode does set her up as someone important for the potential Venus mission. That storyline could be more important in future installments.
The revelation of Valya as the traitor gives the series a great push into the next chapter. With trust shattered and a slew of secrets about to come out, Star City has set up an interesting road ahead.
