The Agency – Episode 5 Rat Trap Recap And Review 2026

The Agency Episode 5 ratchets up the tension as Martian is under increasing pressure about his association with the alias Paul Lewis. He insists that Paul Lewis is just a cover name used to help many people over the years, but not everyone is convinced. After the events of the last episode, Osman is still determined to find out the truth.

Back at the Agency, the pressure from Langley keeps mounting as the team races to make progress on the Coyote investigation. Martian talks about possibly putting someone on the ground to get more intelligence. The assignment goes to Owen, who used to be Coyote’s handler. He’s dispatched to Belarus with local authorities to protect sensitive intelligence and continue the investigation.

Owen arrives in Belarus and searches apartment of Coyote where he finds a cat and a suitcase full of women’s clothing. He soon discovers that the items belong to Eva, Coyote’s housekeeper, who has been hiding there after a fight with her boyfriend. Interestingly, Owen introduces himself as Johnathan.

Meanwhile, Martian gets ready for a dinner date with Sami. After some teasing from Poppy who encourages him to ‘be himself’ he goes out to meet her. Their evening starts well when Sami begins asking questions about Poppy, whom Martian has introduced as Julia. But the date is broken up by Osman who has conveniently located himself in the neighborhood and drops in for a drink.

Osman is very much on Paul Lewis’ trail. Earlier he had been sent a file with fragments of information on Paul’s life, but many details were still missing. He wants to fill in those gaps.

At dinner, Osman tries to get under Martian’s skin but he is unmoved. Sami considers Osman as just a colleague who accompanies her to lectures that she seldom attends. “ Martian is suspicious and inquires about Osman, but Sami declines to discuss his personal life, claiming that revealing too much could endanger him.

The conversation is dropped for the moment, and Martian escorts Sami back to her room. But the next day, Osman continues his investigation and plants doubts in Sami’s mind. He points out the contradictions in Martian’s story, including statements about his daughter Julia, who Sami has never met.

Martian decides to turn the tables, seeing that Osman is getting closer to the truth. He starts to follow Osman and Sami, and is carefully staging his hotel room to look as though it is really occupied by Paul Lewis, adding personal touches and evidence to authenticate the identity.

Meanwhile, Danny has to face the fallout of rejecting Professor Reza’s advances. Reza apologizes for what he did and Danny doesn’t take any action against him. In their conversation Reza continues to add detail to her made up background, inventing a nanny to explain away her limited Farsi abilities.

Soon after, Danny is grabbed off the street and shoved into the back of a car. Reza is interrogated about his alleged links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and is held prisoner for several days. Her captor tells her the passport is a fake, and threatens to keep her locked up for weeks.

But it’s all part of her training exercise. Danny almost breaks under the pressure but he manages to withstand the interrogation and gives no useful information. She even manages to establish a strange bond with her captor before the exercise is over.

Owen spends the night with Eva, before receiving an urgent call from Henry back in Belarus. New intelligence indicates Coyote had been passing information through a dead drop at 31 Ulitsa Bratskaya, a dead drop previously used by both Owen and Coyote. The discovery confirms that the threat is real and that Owen’s current location might already be compromised.

Henry tells him to stay where he is until backup shows up. Owen sees the word “Valhalla” on a surface when looking at the bathroom in thick steam. He locks Eva in the bathroom, fearing for his life, and waits for help.

Meanwhile, Martian and Osman continue their perilous game of deception. Osman arranges for a hotel employee to check Martian’s room, finding evidence to support the Paul Lewis identity, including a manuscript supposedly written by Paul.

Martian even gets beaten up in an elaborate counterintelligence scheme to bolster his cover story.

But Osman proves to be a formidable opponent. He sends one of his henchmen, the one who was involved in the attack to see if Martian has gone to the police. Osman points out another contradiction because Martian never filed a report. And if that wasn’t enough, Paul’s jacket contains Poppy’s contact details which is another possible vulnerability.

Martian, ignorant of Osman’s latest discoveries, reports to Agency headquarters for a meeting with Henry and Owen, who has returned safely from Minsk. They learn that Coyote has been seeing a therapist on the side – something the team was unaware of at the time of the talk.

But most importantly, they begin to decipher the meaning of the mysterious ‘Valhalla’ clue. Their investigation suggests they may have finally found a breakthrough.

The new intelligence suggests a much broader operation to negotiate a secret deal in Sudan and establish influence over an entire region for China. Anyone who tries to interfere with the arrangement seems to be systematically eliminated.

Sadly, Martian may now be one of the next targets.

Osman is closing in on the truth, and Martian has a difficult challenge ahead of him. He must make his well-structured lies seem absolutely real. If he fails, there might be lives lost.Review of Episode Five

Episode 5 further cements The Agency as one of TV’s strongest espionage dramas. The series still knows how to create relentless tension, with almost every scene imbued with danger and uncertainty.

One of the best things about this episode is the contrast between Owen and Danny. Both are under pressure, but the show is about the difference between experienced field operatives and those still learning the realities of intelligence work.

And the mystery of Coyote gets more and more interesting too. With the Valhalla clue and the broader geopolitical context vis-à-vis China, it points to the probe being connected to something far larger than originally thought.

It is the dynamic between Martian, Sami and Osman that lies at the heart of it all. Martian and Sami are unpredictable characters, and Osman’s growing suspicions create a sense of constant threat. Every move Martian makes now is either going to preserve his cover or blow it completely.

Episode 5 brings several storylines together in a way that builds not only tension and raises the stakes on all fronts, but also sets up for a potentially explosive second half of the season.
