The Agency – Episode 9 The Rubicon Recap And Review 2026

Episode 9 of The Agency raises the stakes considerably as a number of operations collide all at the same time. The General has relocated Coyote, and now the CIA is looking for ways to fix the problem. Washington is frustrated by the situation but there is little room for panic. The obstacles are piling up, but the mission must go on.

Martians tries to reassure the top brass with a rosy picture, that there may be some high level intelligence work that might save the day. But behind the confident front, he is only buying valuable time while events spiral beyond his control.

Martian appears genuinely flummoxed, possibly for the first time in the series.## Samia Turns Into a Deadly Martian Weapon

Things get a bit darker when Martian finds a message telling him to check a secure phone. What he finds out is very disturbing.

And then there’s a video of Samia in a cage, putting her right in the middle of a dangerous game. Osman is clear about his intentions: Samia’s fate is now entirely in Martian’s hands.

The demand is straightforward, but it is devastating. Osman wants to know the names of all the assets Martian recruited while he was in Addis Ababa. Martian has only 48 hours to get the information.

This ultimatum puts him in an impossible position. He must betray years of intelligence work and countless operatives or risk losing the woman he loves.# The Race to Get Coyote Back

As Martian battles his own demons, the agency remains intent on getting Coyote back.

The team has only hours to devise a plan, and begins probing Volchok’s network for vulnerabilities. Eventually, their investigation brings them to Leo Kravitsky, a former driver and chef, whose loyalty is questionable.

Leo, feeling passed over and frustrated by his lack of promotion, makes an ideal recruitment prospect.

The agency knows how to turn his dissatisfaction to its advantage. It offers him a chance with influence, responsibility and a bright future. It’s the old intelligence trick. And it works really well.## Martian Takes Dangerous Gamble

Martian takes it upon himself to spearhead the recruitment drive, personally meeting Leo and applying pressure where needed.

The gamble pays.

Later, Leo passes on very useful intelligence via dead-drop, information that could change the entire operation for the CIA. One of the documents is a classified itinerary for travel by Russia’s deputy defense minister that includes details of planned movement near active combat zones in Ukraine.

Anytime you see an opening Martian immediately pushes for aggressive response.

He plans to set up a kill zone that will be meticulously orchestrated to manipulate Volchok’s movements and eventually create an opportunity to rescue Coyote.

The operation is approved despite senior leadership concerns . ### A Mission in Doubt

The final stages of planning are full of anxiety.

Martian and his colleagues study every detail, seeking out weaknesses that could cause the mission to fall apart. One mistake could cost lives, compromise intelligence assets and any chance of getting Coyote home.

Ukrainian forces are being redeployed to assist in the rescue effort. If the trap is successful, specialist teams are ready to move in.

It’s all about timing, good intelligence and a fair bit of luck.

There is no way I can fail.## Danny’s Cover is Tested

Elsewhere, Danny’s storyline hits a significant turning point.

She is given one last briefing before she departs for Iran stressing one of the cardinal rules of the intelligence business: never break cover.

Her new identity is put to the test almost immediately. Every detail of her past is examined, forcing her to think fast under pressure.

Fortunately she is able to keep up the illusion, and is allowed to continue the mission.

Her story is still a bit separate from the main narrative for now, but the show is still laying groundwork that could prove important later in the season.# A Last, Chilling Moment

The episode ends with two agents preparing for very different battles.

Danny continues her mission in Iran. Martian is still shackled to Osman’s demands.

When Osman tries to reach him again, Martian doesn’t get back to him.

He will pay dearly for his silence.

Seconds later a message comes through with a frightening statement:
“‘You just killed her.

It’s a shocking cliffhanger that leaves both Martian and viewers wondering if Samia’s fate is already decided.## Episode 9 Recap

The Agency Episode 9 may be one of the show’s best so far. The series doesn’t just rely on action to create suspense, but also on emotional conflict and impossible decisions.

But Martian’s slow unravelling remains the show’s most compelling story-line. The confident operative who once had control of every situation is now being pulled apart from multiple directions and Michael Fassbender gives a superb performance capturing every layer of that struggle.

There is an extra dimension of tension around the rescue operation, a feeling that disaster could strike at any time. Every conversation seems important, because the stakes have become so high.

The only other question is what happens to Danny. Her mission, while interesting, still seems somewhat removed from the central conflict. If that separation is intentional, the finale setup remains to be seen.

The mysterious interrogation scenes with Martian also continue to raise fascinating questions. The show gives more clues with every episode without showing the entire picture.

Episode 9 succeeds in making you want to know what happens next as the season draws to a close.
