In Episode 4 of The House of the Spirits we see young Blanca and Pedro spending their childhood together in the fields of Las Tres Marías. They go often to Old Pedro Garcia, learning pottery and their friendship over the years is slowly turning into love.
Meanwhile Clara is absorbed in her spiritual world and feels how time passes quickly. She notices a difference in Blanca’s aura and Blanca tells her that she has reached womanhood with the nanny’s help. Clara is stunned to realize she has missed some big moments in her daughter’s life and the two agree to spend more time at the ranch together.
Jaime is sad that he cannot go on the family trip due to his studies, and the nanny tries to cheer him up by suggesting she bake his favourite cake.
Las Tres Marías Rule of Esteban
The ranch remains under the absolute authority of Esteban. When Esteban’s neighbor Sanchez mentions increasing worker protests and the possibility of revolution throughout the country, Esteban confidently states that his workers wouldn’t dream of rebelling against him.
When Blanca arrives she sneaks away to visit Pedro. Meanwhile, the young couple enjoys their secret romance, while Pancha mourns the loss of her son, who died of alcoholism. Clara feels bad about her pain, but she doesn’t know how to comfort someone she’s never really gotten close to.
The Sad Discovery
Clara asks Segundo to give the local children the old school supplies he has. Pedro stops to talk to the priest on his way home, but their conversation is interrupted by a horrific scream.
They soon discover that a worker from a nearby ranch has been murdered and hung up near the border. Stories circulated that he had been killed by his bosses for asking for fair treatment.
Pedro is very upset by the traumatic event. He turns to face his father and grandfather, and asks them why no one stood up for the man. Pancha warns him not to expect justice, telling him nobody stood up for her after Esteban raped her years ago.
The Secret of Pancha
Pancha’s grandson, Garcia, vows to defend her. Pancha later reveals a life changing secret, Garcia is related to Esteban and deserves much more than the life he has been given.
In another subplot, Clara quietly lets Blanca sneak out at night to meet Pedro. But Pedro is still full of rage at the murdered worker, and instead of going to the funeral, he goes to the man’s wake.
The following morning Blanca accuses her father of murder but Esteban brushes her off and warns her never to question him or mention justice.
Esteban vs. Pedro
Soon Pedro sings a song for the workers on Esteban’s ranch. The song, about a fox and a chicken, is obviously political.
Esteban: “You gotta tell me why. But Pedro is undeterred and boldly states that the song is about powerful landowners exploiting poor workers.
Furious, Esteban throws Pedro off the property, warning his family that they will suffer the same if something like this happens again.
Blanca attempts to comfort Pedro but he angrily pushes her away.
Clara’s Caution
Blanca, heartbroken, locks herself in her room. Clara comforts her and assures her that their love can survive.
That night, Clara has a frightening vision of an earthquake. While searching for Blanca, she encounters Esteban, who attempts to win her love back. Clara reminds him that there’s no use in pushing people away.
Disaster Hits
At the river, Blanca and Pedro share an intimate moment as Clara’s vision becomes a reality.
A massive earthquake hits the region.
In the disaster, Pancha dies and Esteban is badly hurt in the leg. Old Pedro, in spite of his past, helps to save Esteban’s life.
After her death, Clara sees Pancha’s spirit and notices she is missing her two front teeth and leaves a mysterious warning.
Blanca’s Secret Comes To Light
Months later, Esteban is slowly recovering from his injury. In the course of this Jean De Satigny makes no attempt to hide his interest in Blanca, but she politely refuses him.
Pedro returns finally and meets Blanca in secret. Unfortunately, Jean witnesses their intimate encounter and immediately reports it to Esteban.
Furioso, Esteban sale a caballo, da con Blanca y la arrastra a casa con violencia.
When Clara confronts him, Esteban attempts to defend himself by insulting Pedro. Clara argues back that Esteban is the true savage, having abused women all his life.
In a fit of uncontrolled rage Esteban punches Clara knocking out her two front teeth.
Esteban loses Clara.
After the attack, Blanca and Clara leave the ranch for the city.
We are also told by Segundo that his family is leaving. Clara takes off her wedding ring and resolves, silently and forever: She will never again talk to Esteban.
Episode Review
Episode 4 is a big twist for The House of the Spirits. Esteban’s obsession with power, status and control eventually destroys the fragile bond that holds his family together.
Clara has one of her most powerful moments of the series here, refusing to be silenced and choosing to protect her daughter at all costs.
The episode also expands the brewing political tension around the peasants and workers. Pedro’s music is a symbol of resistance, while Esteban’s violent reaction shows how threatened he feels by the changing world around him.
And by the end of the episode, the cracks in Esteban’s empire are no longer hidden—they’re impossible to ignore.
