The penultimate episode of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 brings big emotional moments and a devastating betrayal that may alter the fate of the group forever. Vax gains insight into his bond with the Matron, and Pike makes a decision that drives a wedge between her and her friends.
The episode raises the stakes and throws Vox Machina into a precarious situation as the season finale looms.# Vax finally discovers what his gift is
The episode begins with Pike in tears, trying to come to terms with the tough decision she must make. Meanwhile, Vax is in the middle of a powerful transformation, as the Matron’s influence begins to take hold of him.
Vax starts to see his powers differently, not something to be afraid of. Brilliant images show members of Vox Machina strewn across the battlefield, so he can better see what they’re going through. Now, the powers he once thought of as a curse, feel like a purpose he was meant to embrace.
But his visions also tell a disturbing story. A broken thread in the overall pattern indicates a threat incoming.# The Gloomstalker Attack Is a Game-Changer
But it’s too late and the Gloomstalkers attack. With the Beast Tamer in charge, the creatures launch an unanticipated attack and capture Vex, forcing the group to abandon their plans and go on a rescue mission.
Meanwhile, Delilah remains in the tower and becomes increasingly concerned that Pike will not want to join their cause. But Gideon is sure that things will go exactly as he expects them to go.
And the fight shows how much Vax has changed With his link to the Matron, he tracks down the Shadowstone concealed in the Beast Tamer. He kills it with his dagger and thus takes away the threat forever, so the enemy cannot return.## Keyleth Drives Forward
Keyleth shows great control of her powers after the death of the Beast Tamer. She has power over the Gloomstalkers, and that is the way Vox Machina will get to the tower.
To see her grow in confidence and come to command of her Tempest powers is one of the best moments of the episode. Finally, the team appears to be ready to take down Gideon’s plans.
But their momentum is short-lived.
On the journey, Vax is apparently hit by a spear and the group is forced to stop. The delay proves disastrous as Gideon and Delilah begin the ritual that could give Gideon immense power.# The Trap Unmasked
And the episode has one final surprise in store as we discover that Vax’s injury was part of an elaborate deception.
The Beast Tamer was the one behind the Gloomstalkers all along, pulling the strings. Vox Machina had been distracted enough for Gideon and Delilah to proceed with their plans.
The other enemies fall and the focus is on Pike.
Vex extends a hand to her friend, hoping she has decided to stand with Vox Machina. But Pike’s answer is heart-wrenching instead.
She says she is no longer their friend. Pike feels abandoned after the battle against the dragons and she reveals the retribution she’s carried for the group. She stakes her claim to a place next to Gideon, calling herself his blood and willing to fight the friends she once had.# Summary
Episode 11 sets up for a great finale. Pike’s choice is easily the biggest surprise of the episode, creating an emotional conflict that might be even more dangerous than Gideon’s rise to power.
Vax continues to become one of the strongest characters of the season, finally embracing the powers given to him by the Matron. At the same time, Keyleth’s growing mastery of her abilities highlights how much the entire team has changed.
Dark magic is rising, friendships are falling apart, and Vox Machina’s fate is at stake, so expectations for the finale are astronomical. The biggest question is if Pike can still be saved, or if Vox Machina will have to fight one of their own.
