The Sheep Detectives is a mystery-comedy coming in 2026, directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin. The film is based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full and mixes sharp humor, emotional storytelling and an engaging murder mystery that keeps viewers guessing until the final reveal.

George Hardy lives a quiet life on a meadow outside the small town of Denbrook, reading classic murder mysteries to his flock in the evening. The sheep, unbeknownst to him, are carefully watching every story, learning every mystery.
But then George is found dead under mysterious circumstances and everything changes.
Off. Tim Derry (at first) believes George died of natural causes. But strange blue and green smudges on George’s hands suggest something far more sinister. Soon, with the help of visiting journalist Elliot Matthews, Tim learns that George has been murdered.
Meanwhile, sheep Lily, Mopple and Sebastian start their own investigation, using everything George taught them through his nightly stories.
What will George’s will disclose?
George’s lawyer, Lydia Harbottle, gathers a number of townspeople for the reading of his will.
At the meeting Lydia reveals that George had fathered twins with a woman called Lily who tragically died in childbirth. George couldn’t look after the children himself, and put them up for adoption.
Years later, George made his fortune, worth $30 million, after inventing a successful sheep medication.
His will leaves half of his estate to his daughter Rebecca Hampstead and half to his son Peter Van Vuren, who currently resides in South Africa. Rebecca inherits George’s flock and meadow.
How the Sheep Help Tim
Tim has trouble focusing on the investigation, especially since he met Rebecca.
Lily and Mopple realize Tim needs a little help, so they quietly leave one of George’s mystery novels where Tim is sure to find it, hoping it will lead him toward the truth.
Soon another sheep named Cloud tells that Rebecca had been seen in the meadow the night George died. Lily also points Tim to Rebecca’s bracelet, which seems to directly link her to the crime scene.
What Becomes of Rebecca?
Eventually Tim finds enough evidence and finds out Rebecca lied about never going to the meadow.
When he finds poison berries under her shoe he believes he has the case solved. Rebecca is accused of murder. Tim thinks George was murdered for his inheritance.
With Rebecca in prison, it seems that Peter is the only heir to George’s estate.
But the sheep don’t think the mystery is really solved.
What transpires at Caleb’s Meadow?
The investigation continues, but Lily and Mopple sneak off to visit Caleb’s neighboring farm.
There they find out the horrifying truth that Caleb has been secretly working with the local butcher Ham to sell the sheep for meat.
When Caleb’s dogs attack, Sebastian uses his survival instincts, learned from his traumatic past in the carnival, to protect his friends.
Sebastian saves Lily and Mopple, but is fatally wounded in the fight.
His sacrifice is one of the most emotional moments in the film and gives Lily the determination to find the real killer.
Who killed Georgie?
Lily recalls George’s detective stories and figures out that the victim holds the key to every mystery.
She remembers the strange green stain on George’s body, and starts to connect the dots.
The sheep help Tim finally figure out what happened with a neat visual clue involving blue and yellow paint.
And soon Tim finds out the truth:
Real killer: Peter Van Vuren.
Peter had poisoned his drink. George had been working with blue sheep medicine. George got hold of Peter’s yellow-dyed hair in the tussle. George’s body was left with a green stain, the blue medicine having mixed with the yellow dye.
The biggest twist comes when Tim reveals that Peter Van Vuren is actually Elliot Matthews, the journalist who manipulated the investigation and framed his own twin sister Rebecca to inherit George’s fortune.
Elliot tries to escape but is stopped when two rams crash into his car and he is arrested by the police.
What’s Become of the Winter Lamb?
Throughout the film, the Winter Lamb is separated from the flock because he was born in the winter and is thought to be different.
Sebastian’s own painful past means he knows the young lamb better than anyone else.
With Elliot in custody, Lily finally welcomes the Winter Lamb into the fold and gives him a significant new name, George, in memory of their fallen shepherd.
How Does The Sheep Detectives Conclude?
Now the truth is out, Rebecca returns and claims George’s meadow as her own.
When she finds out about the crimes of Caleb and Ham, she evicts them from the property and devotes herself to the protection of the flock.
Rebecca turns a new page with George’s old guide to shepherding.
The film concludes on a warm note with Rebecca reading stories to the sheep, carrying on George’s legacy, and Lily proudly showing young George to the rest of the flock.
Final Thoughts
The Sheep Detectives is much more than a simple murder mystery. There’s witty humor, emotional character development and a surprisingly powerful final twist.
