Episode 1 begins at Moscow International Airport, where Gali and her mother Orna are about to leave after a long layover. Their trip takes an unexpected turn when police officers stop them for a passport check. Both are soon led away from the departure area, Gali being taken to one side for further examination.
Gali whispers something quietly to Orna before they part. The audience finds out what was said later on in the episode.
Orna is released after a few hours, but Gali remains in custody. Police said drugs were found in Gali’s backpack. Gali has been arrested. Orna insists on seeing her daughter and demanding answers, but is told Gali has already been moved to a police station somewhere in Moscow. She has no focus, no fixed point, with more than thirty stations in the city.
Eventually a note is given vaguely saying that Gali could be held in “whichever jail has room for her.” Orna is alone in a foreign country and turns to the Israeli Embassy for help. But she is told such cases are not unusual and Gali is likely to be released or deported within 24 hours. But it’s a public holiday, so nothing can be done immediately.
Orna has few options and waits for the situation to resolve itself quickly. Later she consults a lawyer named Yevgeni who is neither trustworthy nor opportunistic. Soon after she is introduced to Maxim Kiselyov, the official defence lawyer assigned to Gali’s case.
Maxim is telling us how serious it is. Gali is facing drug trafficking charges, and if convicted, he could face 8-12 years in prison. A plea bargain could bring the sentence down to two years, but that’s tough, too. The prosecution seems committed to building a strong case against her.
Orna begins to think maybe Gali was trying to warn her before they separated, telling her not to eat anything she was given at the airport.
The episode also includes flashbacks to two weeks earlier in Mumbai, India. Gali and Orna are on a vacation, mother and daughter. On the way, Gali tells her that she is going to meet her friend Yaara in a nearby village. But Yaara’s travel plans get delayed and the meeting falls apart. The next morning, Gali suggests they leave the area and the rest of the trip passes without incident.
Back in Moscow, Orna tries to take control of the situation and turns to Yevgeni for help once more. That night he takes her to a prison under dubious circumstances. Orna follows his instructions and gets in by wearing something revealing. She is given a tour inside the facility, but is shown the wrong detainee due to poor communication and vague descriptions. In the confusion she also lost a bracelet of Gali’s.
The next day, Orna attends Gali’s court hearing. Maxim successfully argues that Gali’s interrogation was invalid, because there was no Hebrew translator present, which may weaken the prosecution’s case. However, the court allows the case to go forward and orders a three-month remand. Prosecutors are pushing for a potential sentence of up to 18 years.
Maxim says Orna should go back to Israel and ask for government aid, warning that remaining in Moscow might also put her in danger.
The episode ends with another flashback to India. While Orna is ill, Gali is seen sneaking away during the night. But he does offer a glimpse of Gali hiding several passports in a stuffed toy, hinting at deeper secrets and perhaps involvement in illegal activity.
Episode Breakdown
Unconditional has a really good opening premise that pulls you right in. It sets the tone for tension and uncertainty. The story is successful in creating confusion and helplessness about Orna’s situation, while not revealing the details of Gali’s involvement.
The parallel timeline between Moscow and Mumbai works well, slowly revealing that the mother-daughter relationship may not be as simple as it first appears. The flashbacks suggest that Gali’s life is more complex than it seems, with deception and hidden activities.
The introduction of Maxim as the defense lawyer adds a legal and procedural element to the story, and raises the stakes considerably. The possibility of rigged evidence and sketchy circumstances surrounding Gali’s arrest raises the question of whether she’s guilty or being framed.
In short, the episode sets up a tense mystery with strong emotional undertones. It leaves the audience questioning Gali’s real role in the events and creates anticipation for how the legal and personal drama will unfold in future episodes.
