At the beginning of Episode 9, Coop is faced with perhaps the most terrifying moment of his life. He is abducted and taken to a remote warehouse, surrounded by men who make it clear they are watching his every move. They show him footage from his visit to Liv and tell him not to interfere with the money in play.
The kidnappers don’t kill him, but leave a knife behind and let him get away. They want him scared, not dead. The message is clear. By dawn Coop was home at last, tired and shaken but glad to find his children safe and unharmed.
It makes him realize how dangerous things have become in the experience.
Mel Has a Problem With Her Feelings
As Coop navigates the fallout from the kidnapping, Mel faces a heartbreaking task. She quietly buries the neighborhood dog, Arlo, then hears nearby residents looking for him.
It’s a moment that mirrors how Mel feels throughout the episode. She’s distant, overwhelmed, especially with the return of Coop. There are traces of their former relationship in their interaction, but both seem reluctant to rehash old wounds.
And the chemistry is still there between them but neither appears ready to revisit the past.
Grace’s Baby Shower: Cracks Beneath the Surface Exposed
Much of the episode takes place at Grace’s baby shower, where friends have gathered to play games, drink and celebrate. On the surface, all appears cheerful, but tensions are still mounting beneath it.
Mel struggles to keep up, and Grace immediately suspects something’s wrong. Meanwhile the men joke and socialize, with Barney becoming the center of attention because of talk about his recent vasectomy.
The gathering causes trouble for Sam too.
Sam and Owen Ashe Keep Drifting Further Apart
Owen Ashe takes it upon himself to show his love in a public way by doing karaoke and making it about Sam. Unfortunately, the gesture has the opposite effect of what he meant.
As she’s previously expressed her distaste for grand romantic gestures, Sam is more embarrassed than impressed. The awkward moment underscores how far apart the pair have drifted.
Their relationship seems more and more unsustainable when they want very different things from each other.
Coop Starts to Investigate the Greater Danger
Coop still can’t find Ali so he calls Sam for help. He hopes her connections in her profession can help find Ali.
At the same time he is still trying to discover who ordered his kidnapping. But when he meets Owen Ashe, Ashe denies any involvement and says the operation isn’t his style.
We don’t know if Ashe is a liar or not, but interesting question: if Ashe didn’t do it, who?
The chances of yet another big player pulling the strings increase.
Tensions Mount on All Sides
Coop is feeling the heat.
A brief try to restart his romance with Mel doesn’t go anywhere, and his meeting with Lu brings another warning. Lu hears of the kidnapping and tells Coop to stop being a threat and be impossible to ignore.
Meanwhile, a furious Elena arrives, angry Coop has not committed to their crime spree. She storms out after a heated confrontation, feeling abandoned and frustrated by his indifference toward her personal struggles.
Every relationship in Coop’s life is teetering on the edge of a breaking point.
Jack Learns the Truth of Owen Ashe
The episode features one of the biggest developments when Coop finally tells Jack everything.
He points out from whence might have come the money of Owen Ashe, and cautions against the dangers of the trade. Liv claims that their world is no stranger to questionable money, but Jack feels otherwise.
Ultimately, Liv loses her job over the revelation, when Jack fires her for not raising her concerns sooner.
Jack drops another bombshell in private. He’s got his prostate cancer back, and he ain’t got a whole lot of patience for unnecessary risk. He agrees with Coop’s plan to give the money back and get out of Ashe’s business dealings.
The choice sets the stage for the episode’s explosive final act.
Owen Ashe Hits His Breaking Point
Coop and Barney finally get the investment talk with Owen Ashe out of the way.
What they discover is a man coming completely unglued.
Ashe is already emotionally volatile, and the news that his associates have been laundering money through the gyms, while under the influence of ketamine, is not taken well. As the confrontation heats up, the threats against Coop and his family start.
The situation turns dangerous when Ashe pulls out a gun and shoots.
Things go to hell.
In a bizarre, increasingly frantic sequence, Ashe then stumbles through his home in a drug-fuelled fury. His behaviour becomes more reckless with every second that passes until one fatal error changes everything.
He falls, hits his head on the floor and suffers a catastrophic brain injury.
By the time Barney tests for life signs, Ashe appears to be dead.

Your Friends & Neighbors takes a few slower issues, but finally gives us a chapter full of meaningful consequences.
The best thing about Episode 9 is the way Coop develops. He doesn’t react to things happening around him, he takes the bull by the horns and makes the hard decisions. That change moves the whole story along and generates some of the season’s best tension.
Owen Ashe’s fall is also amazingly well done. The show has spent weeks portraying his instability and this episode finally drives him over the edge. His apparent death is shocking, chaotic and totally in keeping with the destructive path he has been on.
Perhaps the most tantalizing mystery concerns the kidnappers. Their warning points to a much larger plan beyond Ashe’s reach. If he hadn’t been the one who’d taken Coop, maybe someone even deadlier was still lurking in the shadows.
It would make sense for Ashe to call emergency services right away, but of course that’s not what happens. There should be evidence of the gunshot and of Ashe’s intoxication, which should make it fairly easy to establish the truth. But TV dramas don’t usually follow the logical trail, and it would be typical of the group to make it so much worse by trying to cover up what happened.
Overall, episode nine is one of the stronger episodes of season two. It pushes forward a handful of storylines, raises the stakes substantially and sets up what should be a dramatic and potentially explosive season finale.
