In the beginning of Episode 2 of Yumi’s Cells Season 3, we see inside the Cell Village. Fishing Cell has been busy catching “angry snappers,” and Yumi is getting more and more angry with Soon-rok. She gets so angry that she has trouble sleeping, and people in the village start to complain about him on the bulletin board.
The next day, Yumi sees Soon-rok going back to the bungeoppang shop. She is determined to get ahead of him, so she rushes there first and buys all the pastries that taste like strawberries. When Soon-rok gets there and sees that they are sold out, he is clearly shocked.
This small win makes Yumi feel better and activates her Endorphin Cells. When she gets home, she gives Coco back to Ruby, who casually confirms that the dog likes to lick its own mess. Ruby also sees that Yumi is acting unusually happy.
Soon-rok sends Yumi a package from Soeil Bakery later that night. The bakery is known for its delicious desserts. He shows up in person right after the delivery and says that the treats were meant for another writer.
The episode then goes back to the Cell Village to show how compliments are handled inside. Soon after, Yumi gets an email from Soon-rok with comments on her writing. She is surprised by how well he understands her work and thinks about complimenting him, but Pride Cell stops her.
Soon-rok goes up to Yumi in the parking lot later and offers her the same dessert box again, knowing she liked it. Pride Cell stops her from saying thank you again. But since they are both going in the same direction, she does give him a ride to the publisher’s office.
When Yumi accidentally drives into the entrance lane instead of the exit, traffic quickly gets blocked. She gets scared, but Soon-rok stays calm, parks the car correctly, and suggests they take a cab instead.
This time, Manners Cell takes over Pride Cell, letting Yumi thank him. But Soon-rok’s reaction makes an internal message in her Cell Village sarcastically tell her to “stop driving.” Yumi can’t sleep again that night. She even thinks about asking Dae-yong to take over her PD, but she decides that it’s not worth it.
The next day, Yumi goes to the train station to go to an event in Busan. She finds out that PD Jang has to leave because of a family emergency, so Soon-rok will go with her instead. At first, she thinks he will take a later train, but he gets there just in time to get on with her. She is also surprised to see him in casual clothes instead of his usual suit and glasses.
Yumi is happy when Soon-rok says he is sitting somewhere else, but Detective Cell starts to wonder what his reasons are. Dae-yong calls at that moment and asks if she would be willing to switch PDs. Yumi is happy to agree and feels better.
She offers Soon-rok a drink and talks about the PD reassignment now that she’s feeling better. She calls Dae-yong again because his reaction seems strange. She finds out that Soon-rok was the one who asked for the change. Yumi’s True Intentions Cell pushes her to face him head-on, even though she’s angry. At the end of the episode, Yumi wants to know exactly what he doesn’t like about her.
Review of the Episode
Season 3 Episode 2 keeps building the tension between Yumi and Soon-rok in a way that is both interesting and fun to watch. Their relationship is always changing. On one hand, Soon-rok drives her crazy, but on the other hand, he does things that make her rethink how she feels.
This emotional push and pull seems real, especially since they are still getting to know each other. It also makes the episode funny while slowly building up to a more serious fight.
The pacing is a little slow, but that helps the episode because it lets the strained relationship grow naturally. It also gives viewers more time in the Cell Village, which shows how Soon-rok’s presence is bringing Yumi back to life after a long time of being dormant.
Kim Go-eun does a great job of making Yumi’s feelings relatable without making her seem too proud. Kim Jae-won, on the other hand, keeps Soon-rok’s calm and reserved demeanor, but in the last scene, he clearly loses his cool when he seems genuinely scared.
The episode ends on a strong note, making us wonder what Soon-rok’s real motives are and pointing the story in an interesting new direction.
