Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 16 is the finale, and it gives us romance, emotional growth and the happy ending we’ve been waiting for between Yumi and Soon-rok. However, the rushed pacing prevents it from being a perfect finale.
Yumi went to work to look for Soon-rok.
The eighth episode opens with Yumi arriving at the office looking for Soon-rok but he hasn’t come in yet. Dae-young talks to her, admitting that he’s been irritated by Soon-rok’s attitude lately.
Yumi finally arrives and asks Soon-rok if they should tell Dae-young about their relationship. But Soon-rok shakes the thought off quickly. Flashback: he’s a big believer in not mixing work and personal relationships, because it complicates things needlessly.
Instead, Soon-rok proposes a romantic birthday trip to Kyoto. He has a business trip to China before and they agree to meet right at the airport and fly to Japan together.
Soon-rok’s Principles Start to Crumble
The episode also gives viewers a glimpse into Soon-rok’s inner world through his “Tower of Principles.” Each block of the tower is one of his strict personal rules.
He starts to break more of these rules as he gets closer to Yumi. Every law he breaks chips away at the tower, evidence of how much Yumi has changed him.
The one principle that is above all others:
No office dating. No getting caught.
The Kyoto Trip Goes Wrong
Soon-rok takes his flight to Japan on the trip day. Unfortunately, Dae-young and Ju-ho are on the same flight to Osaka.
Yumi sees them and messages Soon-rok, unsure what to do. Soon-rok tells her to catch the next flight, but there are no seats when she tries. Eventually she takes a taxi home, telling him to enjoy Kyoto alone.
Soon-rok is disappointed and can’t enjoy himself the whole trip.
Soon-rok Finally Discloses Their Relationship
On his return, Yumi picks up Soon-rok from the airport. She says she stayed behind to guard his rule about keeping work and personal life separate.
It changes all at that moment.
Soon-rok stops the car and calls Dae-young. He tells him point blank that he and Yumi are dating.
The last block of his tower falls inside his cell village and the whole thing comes tumbling down. Soon-rok realizes his old ways don’t suit him anymore.
Yumi is visibly moved by his decision.
Soon-rok’s Work Impact
Back at work, Dae-young reminds Soon-rok of his old beliefs, including his earlier stance that producers who date writers should be removed from editorial teams.
Soon-rok says simply: “People’s principles can change.”
The Straight Path General, who in his mind had been chosen to safeguard his principles, had instead chosen to safeguard Yumi.
Yumi’s Unexpected Encounter with Her Past
Soon-rok realizes that he never got Yumi a proper birthday present so he stops at a jewelry store before meeting her.
He has a couple of hours before his next business trip so he decides to take her to his favorite 떡볶이 restaurant.
But they soon realize that it is Babi Bunsik, a restaurant owned by Babi’s father, Yumi’s ex-boyfriend.
Luckily the restaurant is closed and they go somewhere else. Eventually Yumi tells Soon-rok the truth about her connection to the place and the way Soon-rok handles this is surprisingly mature.
Marry Yumi Soon-rok?
Yes — Soon-rok surprises Yumi with a diamond ring.
Yumi first thinks it is just a birthday present. But Soon-rok says that’s actually a suggestion.
He tells her that he thinks they are meant to get married and asks her what she thinks.
Immediately, chaos starts inside Yumi’s cell village.
Her Love Cell wants to say yes and her Reason Cell makes the point that they’ve only been dating for a month. Writer Cell also chimes in, arguing Yumi can’t be thinking about marriage when she’s busy with her writing career.
Will Yumi say yes to the proposal?
Not in the beginning.
The conversation turns serious and Soon-rok gets a work call and has to leave for the airport.
His flight is later cancelled because of engine problems, giving him a second chance to talk to Yumi.
Soon-rok says he bought the ring because he is certain of their future. For the first time in his life he feels sure about someone.
His honesty touches Yumi, but she wants to take her time.
She tells him to give back the ring for now. She promises that when she is ready to get married, it will be her doing the proposing.
How Does Season 3 Finish?
Soon-rok accepts Yumi’s decision, but he is disappointed. Yumi cheers him up with kisses of love and the two start discussing how long she might need.
Yumi jokes about needing a year.
Yumi’s parents drop in unexpectedly, interrupting their talk.
Yumi attempts to hide Soon-rok to avoid an awkward situation, but soon her mother finds the diamond ring and things start to fall apart.
Eventually Soon-rok comes out, introduces himself and makes a good impression on her parents.
In Yumi’s cell village, everyone jokes that she may be married before Christmas.
Do Yumi and Soon-rok marry?
Yes.
A mid-credits scene confirms Yumi and Soon-rok get their happy ending, showing the couple taking wedding photos together.
Episode Review:
Episode 8 has a lot of emotional moments and finally gives Yumi the happy ending many viewers wanted. One of the best things about the finale is Soon-rok’s change from being a man obsessed with rules to someone willing to risk everything for love.
However, the episode is hampered by pacing problems. The big developments come thick and fast, from the revelation of their office romance and breaking his own personal rules to proposing marriage. These moments are emotionally effective, but they could have used more breathing room.
But the chemistry between Yumi and Soon-rok remains strong throughout the episode. Their dynamics are natural, sincere, and really adorable. The finale mightn’t have the emotional payoff that the series deserved, but it’s still an enjoyable one, especially with the always entertaining cell village sequences.
Overall, Season 3 ends on a satisfying note, giving Yumi the future she has been searching for – even if it feels slightly rushed to get there.
