At the beginning of Euphoria Season 3 Episode 4, Rue is in police custody after fentanyl is found in her car. The investigation is moving fast and officers start hammering her about Laurie and possible ties to Mexico.
Rue says she’s never been to Mexico, but there’s proof, including a photo of her with Uno, a cartel-connected guy who owns a club just across the border. The situation is getting hot and Rue has two possible futures ahead of her: a long prison sentence or becoming a confidential informant for the DEA to bring down the drug network.
Rue returns to Alamo to find that the pills have been replaced with harmless ones. She is also told to have a monitoring app on her phone at all times, adding to her paranoia and sense of being watched.
Meanwhile, Nate is recovering from injuries including a surgically reattached toe. He thinks of it as a symbol of trying to piece his broken life back together. But when he admits he owes Naz a big amount of money, his finances are in shambles, shocking Cassie and putting more pressure on their relationship.
Disillusioned, Cassie consults Maddy for help in leaving Nate. She’s in transition, attempting to shed her suburban upbringing for a more metropolitan, image-conscious identity with dreams of social media stardom.
Lexi tries to do Jules a favor by giving her a creative outlet in the form of a chance to paint a portrait, but the project quickly gets out of hand. Jules sends in something provocative, but it is rejected by the producers. In a fit of frustration she defaces her own work with red paint, causing major production delays. The incident causes a huge financial loss to the studio and Lexi is told not to have any more setbacks.
Elsewhere, Laurie is emotionally unstable after a personal loss and unwilling to continue business dealings with Alamo. This makes things more difficult for Rue, who is indirectly involved in the activity.
Later, Nate attends a board hearing in a last-ditch effort to resolve a land development issue involving protected environmental regulations. His plea is denied and he breaks down, a sign of a deeper personal and professional breakdown.
Meanwhile Maddy pushes Cassie to create a provocative online persona, leading her into ever more dangerous social situations. At a high-profile party, Cassie catches the eye of someone, but she makes herself even more distant from Maddy.
At the club, Rue becomes more suspicious and begins asking questions about the drug trafficking operations. Others are concerned about her behaviour and her DEA handlers watch her closely. Things go from bad to worse when some armed men storm the club, shoot Eddy and steal the supplies from the safe.
Amid the chaos, Rue recognizes Faye as the getaway driver while the DEA hears it all, confirming how compromised her position’s become.
Episode Review
Rue’s circumstances only worsen as her role as a forced informant means that she is constantly being watched. Her wildness makes her more and more vulnerable. The question is how long she can continue this double life before she’s outed.
This robbery of the club is a major escalation in the ongoing feud between the network of Alamo and the operation of Laurie. It’s a big change in the criminal arc of the season.
Bishop is a figure of ambiguity and his actions at key junctures raise suspicions over whether he is manipulating events behind the scenes, or perhaps working undercover.
In the story of Jules we see more and more irresponsibility as her actions have direct consequences for Lexi’s professional work. Her failure to grasp the effects only heightens the tension between individual expression and the consequences of that expression in the real world.
Cassie’s transformation continues to tilt towards image-driven ambition, her choices increasingly removing her from her earlier emotional conflicts. Maddy’s hold on her raises issues of control, loyalty and exploitation.
Nate’s story comes to a head as his financial and personal problems come crashing together, leaving his future in the balance.
The episode stacks up multiple plotlines to the point of instability, with Rue’s undercover pressure, the escalating criminal conflict, and fractured personal relationships all colliding. As the season reaches its halfway point, the big question remains: can Rue keep her cover, or will everything around her fall apart first.
