South Korean men must serve in the military by law . Not all of them see combat , however . Some are assigned to alternative public service duties, and that’s exactly what gifted plastic surgeon Do Ji-ui opts for, hoping to fulfil the requirement with minimal interruption to his career.
To do his duty, Ji-ui leaves his job at a prestigious university hospital, and becomes a public health doctor. He is ready for most assignments, but there is one place he would like to avoid: a remote island. Unfortunately fate has other plans.## A New Beginning on Pyeondong Island
Ji-ui is posted to Pyeondong-do, a remote island community with poor living conditions and a bad reputation among healthcare workers. Ji-ui arrives under less than ideal circumstances, and is considered by many doctors in public health to be the least desirable posting.
Shortly after landing on the island, he meets Yook Ha-ri, a dedicated nurse at the local public health center. Ha-ri also worked at a university hospital like Ji-ui but it is unknown why she decided to move to the island.## Life on Island
As Ji-ui finds his place in his new surroundings, he becomes more and more entwined in the lives of the islanders. In his medical work he learns about the unique challenges, personal struggles and hidden stories that define the community.
At the same time, Ji-ui has to face his own fears and emotional scars about the sea and island life.
