Marriagetoxin – Episode 4 Recap & Review

Episode 4 of Marriagetoxin opens with Gero escorting a shy underclassman named Shiori Ureshino to a college drinking party. After the death of her father, Shiori inherited his company and became the CEO, which made her the target of internal family conflict. Her ambitious aunt wants to take control of the business and has hired Gero to protect her from her.
Shiori struggles in social situations. She’s so insecure that she overthinks every interaction and can barely introduce herself. But her fumbling attempt is more traditional than Gero’s weird show, where he chugs several cups of beer and spits it out with a polymer trick that disturbs everyone. Also at the party, there’s a strange character named Naruko, a shy blond student who wears headphones, gives a brief intro and then fades into the background.
Then Shiori confesses to being disappointed in herself. Gero asks why she came, considering how anxious she is, and she tells him that her late father had wanted her to enjoy things like this someday. But Shiori is determined to grow and she resolves to overcome her fears and learn to enjoy life.
Unaware, Naruko is watching from a distance and reporting to Shiori’s aunt, Futae. He has Gero as a good bodyguard, and he doesn’t see holes to attack. It becomes apparent later that Naruko is under Futae’s influence, although their dynamic hints at something more disturbing, as she appears to lose control around him.
Soon Naruko puts his plan into action. Shiori is in class with Gero, so he takes himself to the rooftop and pulls off an effective sound-based attack. The vibrations that come after disturb the room, and debris starts to fall in chaos. Gero responds immediately, raising himself with his serum and rescuing Shiori just in time. This encounter shows the clash between two “Masters”: Naruko, the Sound Master, and Gero, the Poison Master.
Shiori is looking forward to the dangerous department camping trip. She asks her uncle and he surprisingly agrees, though it is implied later that Naruko has manipulated him. The trip starts off with a positive note. Gero is cooking for others and impressing them, while Shiori is trying to get out of her comfort zone.
She decides to make friends, taking a page from Gero’s earlier book of antics. She dresses as a witch, using small magic tricks with yakisoba to grab people’s attention and make them laugh and clap. It’s a small but important breakthrough for her confidence.
That night, after hearing a spooky story about a nearby shrine, the group goes through a courage test. But Naruko seizes this opportunity to turn the woods into a deadly trap, filling it with almost invisible threads as he readies himself to strike. The episode ends on a tense note as his plan unfolds.
Episode Reviews
This episode continues to push Marriagetoxin further into the high-concept, superpowered realm. The addition of the Sound Master brings spectacle and unpredictability to the series’ creative power system. The increasing powers of these characters keep things fresh, but it also highlights how underwhelming Gero’s presentation can sometimes be.
The episode does well to flesh out Shiori emotionally. Her anxiety problems are written with clarity and honesty and make her a character that you can easily relate to. This is not just comic relief with her shyness, but a serious look at her slow rise to recovery. The highlight is her small victory at the camping trip.
Naruko is still in the process of developing into a villain so she provides a different energy from past antagonists. His cold, detached nature, and enjoyment of manipulation and violence, suggest a more dangerous and unpredictable threat. This difference makes a strong dynamic between him and Gero going forward.
Overall, Episode 4 strikes a good balance of action, character development, and growing tension, setting the stage for a more intense showdown to come.
