Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Episode 3: Higher Stakes in Every Possible Way. Paula faces more legal trouble, a dangerous con comes after her, and Dennis gets closer to the truth. The show’s most intense chapter yet.
At the beginning of the episode, another camboy, Sky, chats with his online audience, further fleshing out the strange digital world of the story. But the attention soon returns to Paula, whose life is becoming ever more chaotic by the minute.
Karl And Mallory Give Paula A New Beginning
Paula meets with Karl and Mallory to talk about Hazel’s future. The two unexpectedly give Paula the chance to move with them to Boise, Idaho. They even offer to pay her housing and give her a car, if she moves.
Paula is tempted, but does not accept the offer right away. The proposal clearly makes her think about what kind of future she wants for herself and for Hazel.
Dennis Starts Following Paula
Paula has her own problems to deal with, and Dennis begins his own disturbing investigation. He uses the tissues Paula left in the pink bag with Hazel’s soccer cleats to find a restaurant she frequents.
From there, he hunts down nearby elementary schools and hatches a terrifying plan. Dennis buys several identical pairs of shoes, embeds tracking devices inside, and leaves them in the lost-and-found at local schools.
The sequence demonstrates just how methodical and dangerous he really is.
Paula Gets Another Threatening Call
At work Paula receives a call from an unknown number. This time, the caller orders her to transfer $15,000 before 3 p.m.
In desperation, she tries to call Detective Gonzales, but the calls go unanswered. But as the deadline approaches, Paula panics.
In the meantime, Detective Gonzales and Jim are still working on Trevor’s house. Their investigation takes them to a neighbor who mentions a boyfriend named Dennis, providing the detectives with another vital piece of the puzzle.
Geri Snooping on Paula’s Computer
Paula rushes to the bank but leaves her laptop sitting open in the office. Geri can’t resist poking around Paula’s files and invading her privacy.
At the same time Dennis gets a call from a “Tech Support” guy, who is connected to the shady operation from the previous episode. The worker says all company business records are clean, but notes that they found videos of people not connected to their targets.
Dennis has everything wiped out right away, dropping hints of darker secrets that lie beneath the surface.
Paula Outsmarts The Frauds
Paula makes a smart move at the bank. She doesn’t wire the whole amount, only one dollar to the account.
The small transaction creates a receipt that connects the account to a company named OBG Properties.
Soon the scammers realize what Paula has done. They are enraged and threaten to kill Trevor if she does not send the remaining money. Paula then shocks the caller by telling him that Trevor is already dead.
The person on the other end of the line, a young woman named Ash, is visibly shaken after hearing the truth and immediately tries to contact Trevor herself.
Dennis Chases The Wrong Girl
Hazel is eventually turned on by one of Dennis’ trackers. Unseen, he watches Mallory pick her up and follows her and Karl all day long.
Later Dennis follows Mallory on a bike ride through the woods. In one of the most chilling moments of the episode, he attacks her, puts a bag over her head and drags her away.
But Dennis soon finds he’s made a mistake. Mallory does not have the tattoo on her ankle that he saw on Paula earlier. Knowing he has the wrong woman, he arranges the attack to look like a robbery and leaves her.
This scene is a perfect encapsulation of Dennis’ growing instability and obsession.
Paula Turns Down Karl’s Proposal
Paula’s relief at Hazel’s soccer practice is a short emotional breather from tension, as she shares some warm moments with co-coach Steve.
Karl asks later if she’s decided about moving to Boise. “No,” says Paula firmly. “I want Hazel to see me as somebody who’s willing to stand up for myself and not somebody who’s controlled by her ex-husband,” she explains.
Paula decides to fight for custody in the courts rather than take the easy way out.
Detective Gonzales Becomes Suspicious
Detective Gonzales is still building his case against Paula. Jim reports that Paula’s fingerprints were on the hockey stick found on Trevor’s roof and she was caught on camera driving away from the scene of the crime.
But Gonzales is particularly interested to learn that Paula’s fingerprints were already in the system prior to Trevor’s murder.
At the end of the episode, Gonzales goes directly to Paula and questions her about a mysterious incident in Portland, making us think that Paula is hiding an even darker past.
Review of Episode 3
Episode 3 is a lovely mix of psychological tension, mystery and personal drama. The story moves quickly without feeling crowded, and almost every subplot moves the story forward in meaningful ways.
Paula remains a compelling lead. Her choice to outsmart the scammers rather than blindly following their instructions demonstrates intelligence and resilience, and her refusal to give up custody of Hazel adds emotional depth to her storyline.
The performances are still one of the show’s biggest strengths. Again, Tatiana Maslany gives a layered performance that conveys Paula’s fear, determination, and vulnerability all at once.
Dennis is just as good as Murray Bartlett. The episode has one of its most unsettling moments when he can seem emotionally devastated during his phone call with Detective Gonzales, but at the same time is stalking Mallory.
But not all story lines are created equal. Rudy and Geri still feel underdeveloped and their scenes lack the immediacy and emotional impact of the central story.
But with its blend of murder investigation, online scams, stalking and custody battles Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is fast becoming a gripping thriller that knows how to keep viewers hooked.
