Michael (2026) Ending Explained – Does the biopic do justice to the King of Pop?

The musical biopic Michael in 2026 takes a look at the life and rise of the legendary singer Michael Jackson, also known as the King of Pop. Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a script by John Logan, the film stars Michael’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in his acting debut as the iconic performer. Colman Domingo, Miles Teller and Mike Myers play supporting roles.
The story starts in 1966, when steel mill worker Joseph Jackson dreams big and brings his sons together to form the Jackson 5. Young Michael is a standout right from the start as the lead singer of the group, his talent shows early on.
The Jackson 5’s Origins
Years of strict discipline under their father led to the Jackson 5 signing with Motown Records in 1969. With chart topping hits and sold out shows across the United States they are an instant success. With their growing popularity, the family moves to California.
But Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. sees Michael’s special promise and suggests that he be groomed as a solo act. Despite Joseph’s protests, Michael eventually signs with Epic Records and begins work on his first major solo projects as an adult.
Personal Struggles & Metamorphosis
As Michael’s solo career blossoms, tensions with his dad grow. Joseph’s controlling behavior and critical remarks highlight Michael’s insecurities. This leads Michael to have rhinoplasty done to alter the appearance of his nose.
Around the same time he is diagnosed with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation. The film shows this as a turning point , physically and emotionally , which further strains his relationship with his father . With advice from his close friend and bodyguard Bill Bray, Michael finally decides to leave and take control of his life.
The Making of a Thrill
In 1981 Michael took a major step toward independence, firing Joseph as his manager with the help of his attorney, John Branca. He starts work on new music, including what will become the landmark album Thriller.
Michael comes up with the idea for the song “Thriller” based on horror movies, and also turns out hits such as “Beat It” and “Billie Jean.” The film looks into his creative process and dedication, his charity work and unusual personal life, including his famous relationship with his pet chimp Bubbles.
Tearing Down Walls with MTV:
Thriller’s massive success leads to Michael’s invitation to perform “Billie Jean” at the 25th anniversary celebration of Motown, an iconic moment in music history. Michael and John Branca, eager for more exposure, approach CBS Records president Walter Yetnikoff to urge MTV to play his music videos.
At the time, MTV had a reputation for not featuring Black artists. Yetnikoff steps in, using CBS’s clout to lean on the network. As a result, MTV starts to play Michael’s videos, vastly increasing his international exposure and changing the music industry.
The Pepsi Event
In 1984, a Jackson 5 reunion tour is organized, with promoter Don King and Joseph Jackson involved. Michael stars in a commercial for Pepsi as part of his advertising campaign. A technical problem while shooting causes his hair to catch fire, resulting in severe burns and long-term physical damage.
Michael and his people sued Pepsi and eventually settled for $1.5 million. In a defining act of generosity, Michael donated the entire amount to the burn center that treated him.
The End and What It Means
Michael recovers and joins his brothers on the reunion tour but declares at the final show that the Jackson 5 will never perform together again. This is a clean break from his father’s influence, and his full transition into a solo artist.
The film then cuts to 1988, as Michael performs at Wembley Stadium during his Bad tour. The ending hints at a possible sequel, implying his story isn’t over.
Does the movie do justice to Michael Jackson?
Michael is a successful musical biopic, but it doesn’t feel like the full picture of the artist’s life. The film captures the energy, creativity and dedication behind his most iconic work, particularly during the making of Thriller. However, it leaves out the more controversial and complex aspects of his life.
The film is thus a sleek, streamlined retelling of Michael Jackson’s story. If you want a more nuanced and complete portrayal, the ending may seem a bit flat. Michael does a great job with some strong performances and impressive musical sequences, but he falls short of a fully comprehensive look at one of the most influential figures in music history.
