My Royal Nemesis – K-drama Episode 2 Recap & Review

My Royal Nemesis Episode 2 starts with Lady Kang waking up from a nightmare in which the King turns from charming to terrifying and makes her drink poison. The dream leaves her shaken and reminds viewers that her past still haunts her.

Kang Provides Her Protection

Now, Kang tells Se-gye that she has a good sense of danger and has survived several attempts at assassination. Confident in her abilities, she volunteers to be his bodyguard. Se-gye refuses the idea immediately and turns her away.

But Son then takes Kang home and admits that Se-gye was worried about her safety. During the ride Kang is totally overawed by the “speed” of the car, which is moving at a mere 20 kilometers per hour.

Se-gye’s family dinner exposes hidden tension

Se-gye’s grandfather Dal-su shares a family dinner in silence with his daughters and nephew Mun-do. Everyone is nice, but the interactions are forced and insincere. But after donating a kidney to Dal-su, Mun-do appears to have won his true love.

Se-gye arrives late, bored by the passive-aggressive conversations of the family. At dinner he learns that the protesters had been recent, demanding unpaid wages, but Son paid them off. This makes Se-gye wonder if someone paid the protesters an even bigger sum to make an attempt on the life of the president.

Se-gye looks into Kang

Se-gye, who has been cautious of Kang passing in front of him several times, instructs Son to look into her history. Interestingly, the investigation reveals that Shin Seo-ri seems to be completely normal, with no suspicious history or criminal connections.

Kang Feels the Warmth of Family

Kang is at Seo-ri’s house and sees Seo-ri’s granny, Nam Ok-sun waiting for her. Ok-sun cooks for them and even gives Kang some money despite their own financial problems. Kang is touched by the older woman’s kindness and real pride.

Kang Adjusts to Contemporary Living

Kang is starting to get used to life in modern-day Korea, but it’s not easy. She finds Seo-ri’s cramped apartment, thin walls, noisy neighbours. When neighbor Baek Gwang-nam tries to chastise Kang for making too much noise, she quickly shuts him down, impressing everyone else in the building.

Kang’s painful memories from the palace where other court maids bullied her and locked her inside a box in an empty courtyard flash back.

Meanwhile, Se-gye has a weird dream about hearing a woman calling for help in a similar courtyard in the Joseon era, hinting at a mysterious connection between them.

Kang’s View Changes as Seo-ri’s Past Unveils

Kang reads Seo-ri’s diary and learns that Seo-ri has suffered a lot in her life. She is a former child actress who can’t get work now and helps support her grandmother. Seo-ri is never abused by others, but she never gives in.

Moved by Seo-ri’s resolve, Kang decides to live bravely for both of them. She spends her days protecting neighbors, confronting troublemakers and studying Korean history on Youtube.

Mun-do Begins to Keep an Eye on Kang

Meanwhile Mun-do secretly installs a listening device into a gift for Dr. Seon Jeong-hyeon’s new clinic. Se-gye overhears Seo-ri talking about him and his strange dreams through the bug.

Jeong-hyeon jokes that fate is leading Se-gye to love, but Se-gye refuses to believe it. But Mun-do starts to think that Seo-ri might be Se-gye’s biggest weakness.

Kang Becomes a Viral Sensation

Kang, having run out of money, attempts to persuade Se-gye to take her back, but he refuses. An assistant director, also in financial trouble, leaks footage of Kang’s scenes from a previous period drama to expose the mistreatment within the industry.

The clips go viral on the internet and several brands want to work with her. But Se-gye doesn’t hire her right away for his company.

Kang’s Growth Fueled by Live Shopping

Two weeks later, Kang is still trending online. During this time, Gwang-nam helps her to get live shopping modeling jobs. Surprisingly, Kang is wildly successful, selling out everything she puts on the market.

During one live broadcast, however, she is asked to promote a tonic served in a bowl. The sight triggers painful memories of her being poisoned and she has a major panic attack and runs off set.

Se-gye gets there just in time to stop an angry director from hitting her.

Kang’s Trauma Triggered by Mun-do’s Face

Mun-do appears just as Se-gye is about to offer Kang a job. Kang terror-freezes when she sees that Mun-do has the exact same face as the King who ordered her execution.

Kang is terrified and instinctively hides behind Se-gye and asks him to protect her. Then suddenly she hugs him tight and Se-gye is totally flabbergasted.

Another flashback shows that in the past, a mysterious half-masked man who looks exactly like Se-gye saved Kang from her prison.

Review: Episode 2

The second episode builds on the fantasy-romance premise, but devotes much time to Kang’s adjustment to contemporary life. Im Ji-yeon turns in another standout performance, adding charm, humor and emotional depth to Kang’s character.

The series is still a very slow burn – it feels more like a slice-of-life drama than a high-stakes fantasy romance. This is fun for the characters, but the main story drags on.

Se-gye remains one of the most unpredictable characters of the drama. He’s an interesting character, with his sudden swings from cool detachment to earnest sincerity to awkward charm, even if he is at times inconsistent.

The pacing of episode 2 is a bit uneven, but there are also some emotional depths, more character connections, and new mysteries that make the drama harder to ignore.
